View Full Version : Bad News Guys- Need Opinions
G.J. Dixon 11-11-2003, 09:23 PM Hey guys, I heard from my engine builders today, and they basically told me that my S14 engine is a boat ancor. :violinist
They gave me a few options, but I don't have the cash to do what I have to do with this engine. :(
here is goes:
1- should I not care about expense and just spend 15k for the 2.5 rebuild
2- should I stay 2.3 and spend about 10k on the rebuild
3- sell all the parts that I got for the swap and keep the M10
4- build the M10
5- get a gun and shoot myself for trying to do this project in the first place
Yonkers320is 11-11-2003, 09:32 PM Sorry to hear about that GJ, but seen all the work you did on the car, and seen how it drove with the S14, it would be a drag to go back to the M10.
Unfortunately, the rebuild cost is astronomical, so it all depends. What about finding a new S14 motor in good condition, one that doesn't need a rebuild and sell parts of the damaged S14 to recoup some money.
Building the M10 wouldn't cost as much as rebuilding the S14?
BoostedE21 11-11-2003, 09:38 PM What happened to the motor? If you part it out, how much for the head:devillook
Carzzi 11-11-2003, 09:40 PM Spend ~$2K-5K and drop in an M50/52 (E36) 2.5 to 2.8 litre engine & tranny!!
G.J. Dixon 11-11-2003, 11:33 PM The Oil Pump let go, which caused the main bearings to let go, which then caused the connecting rod bearings to let go.
As of now, everything in the bottom end needs to be replaced: Crank, Rods, Pistons and all the Bearings.
They were just about to start taking the head apart to see if there is any damage there, so I will probably hear from them in another day or 2 with more bad news.
wait, if the bearing let go, shouldn't only the crank & con rods be damaged? ...unless a rod broke off.
yeah, since ur car is pretty much all setup for the s14....i'd do what yonkers said....just try to find a used s14....hell, u could maybe find someone who's doing a 2.5 rebuild and buy their old s14 parts.
or u could build a Hi reving s14 using a m10 2.0 crank (then get the most aggressive cam u can get....and start wooping some as$ at the track :evil2 )

My feelings totally:b_blue:
uberpanzer 11-12-2003, 12:35 PM Sorry to hear about the loss of your S14. I'm in the same boat (tossed a rod out the side of my block at Willow Springs). I would say that option #5 (the gun) is out of the question. This is a kick @ss set-up.
My personal opinion is go ahead with the 2.5 rebuild. See if you can do some of the work yourself, cutting down on the costs. I know that 2.5 parts are expensive, but you won't regret it in the long run.
BoostedE21 11-12-2003, 12:48 PM Basicly what everyone said, do the rebuild, do it your self and cut the cost down like doug said.I'm sure that the M10 wont be as good as the S14, even tho the M10 is a good motor. good luck.

HAHAHA! :evil2 Very Funny! :stickoutt
I'm still not sure what I'm going to do yet, but I think I'm just going to have them put the engine back together, pay them for their labor and inspection costs, then get all the parts and build the 2.5 myself, now that I know what the engine needs.
I've got too much invested in this project to go back, and too much fabrication work in the car to go back.
I would like to do a 2.0 conversion and not the 2.5 but I'm not sure of what parts I need to get for that. I don't really need the extra torque for a 2000lb car, I just need more HP.
