Well, my status for this event was in much doubt after a night of rampant consumption, but Jacob (Def) was on top of things and called me to let me know that registration was running late. So, I drug my hungover self down to Turner Field and signed up.

This was my first time ever to run a car of any sort in an autox event, so I was nervous and not exactly sure what to expect. Jacob walked the course with me, giving me pointers as we went along. After that, I just tried to picture the course in my mind a handful of times, so that I knew about how I was going to tackle each cone set as they came up.

After much delay, we finally ran in the last run group. Four runs... about 20 minutes apart, or so. Here's how they went (tenths are approximate; actual results online in a couple of days):

1) 64.8
2) 61.5
3) 59.5
4) 58.4

I was proud of myself for improving on each run. I really learned something each time out and tried to apply that to my next run. Jacob and Adam (another member here) were running 55-56s, but they have been autoxing for a few years each, so their times were not unexpected.

Plus, the weather was really cooling off a lot later, as the sun was setting (it was set for our last two runs), so people were actually running worse times as the track cooled off. So, I was pleased.

I still, obviously, have a long way to go. I can still point out things that I know I did wrong on my last run that I could've probably improved on even more, given another run yesterday. However, I had a blast and I'll be ready to get out and continue to progress next time I can go.

Thanks to all who offered their insight in advance. I tried to remain mindful of all the tips and hints as the day went on and I think they really helped.

Sounds like a good time. Come on over to Bham next weekend for another. I'm planning on running my first one in the new M3.

Here you go Aaron. Had the results sitting in my inbox.

The course was pretty challenging, with some very tight sections and then some high speed sweepers and slaloms that seemed to throw alot of people off. I was running into the unfamilar problem of having almost no rear grip. I'm running staggered LTW wheels with Yoko ES100 tires that are basically toast all the way around. My front tires would be pretty toasty after a run, and the rears would be ice cold(ice cold being about 50-60*F, ambient GA weather:)).

I actually spun once, and hit a cone my "fastest" run. So I had to settle for a 56.8 for my fastest time. Bah...

You did awesome Aaron, but I'm sure my expert course walking skills and suggestions are what really sealed the deal and started you off to an excellent AutoX career. :D

Wow, short course.

There are valuable half-seconds that I could've picked up here and there, given more time to tweak my approach. I hope everything carries over to my next event. :)

... or fast. Our local courses are typically in the 55-60 second range on a very large lot. Pretty typical of a tour event, also.

Congrats....

Great job for a maiden voyage. Hope you have the bug. It a great sport.

Remember the mantra for autocross...

Look ahead....

Reason: your hands go where you eyes look....

If you are seeing cones as they pass, you are way too late.

Enjoy!

I was up towards redline in 2nd gear twice in the course. We've had longer ones at this location, but it wasn't all that short for a local course.

Jacob, are the results up on the web yet? If so, where can I find them?

If not, could you forward me the email? IM me to get my email address -- I don't like posting it on here, because then bots collect them and send me spam.
