View Full Version : Crazy project car idea.....
Dark Helmet 11-08-2003, 02:50 AM well, as you all know, we're about halfway through the lease on my wife's car, and she'll likely be about finished with her full-time work by the time the contract is up, so its come time to begin the search for her more economical means of travel...
now, between a lengthy discussion on "why" and "why not" on the way to/fro NoVa, and some information sharing with some other knowledgeable individuals, I have reached what I believe to be a novel and quite potent solution...
now, before you go crazy, think about it, gobs or HP, gobs of torque, smoooooooooooooooooth, substantial, versitile, inconspicuous, and above all, classy....
that idea????
E34 550i Touring.
think about it.... :evil2 :evil2 :evil2
Dark Helmet 11-08-2003, 02:51 AM and I think I'm going to drop an SBF into my car.... ok, maybe not.
Mojo325is 11-08-2003, 03:44 AM hmmmm.....i dunno. I'm slated to help a buddy deliver a car from Detroit (rock city and home to my beloved Red Wings) to Omaha in December.....although it's another Deutsch car (read: Damlier0Benz*cough*) maybe I can decipher what the heck you are talking about.....
Mojo325is 11-08-2003, 03:45 AM btw: project car is a '69 Stang or a '79 'Bu....not a Bimmer, unless a 2002...... :D :D :D :D

Dude.... you're one crazy mofo! :D
I had the pleasure of driving a 540 sedan awhile back. That thing really hauled ass. Torque at every RPM band!
Now talking about a 550 touring, that would be the ultimate sleeper! What kind of engine would that be Jer?
toddman35 11-08-2003, 02:06 PM V12 out of a 7 or 8? That would rock!
bmw3er 11-11-2003, 01:42 PM It would be pure comedy to see that smoke the M3s in run groups 1 and 2 at next summers DE. And Todd - I better see you next summer for the longest day driving school. It is the most fun you can have in your car. One of the best ways to make your car faster is to make the driver faster. Think about it.
94E36-325is 11-11-2003, 09:04 PM bmw3er - How do you like your ES 100?? I'm going to have to buy new tires next summer and they where on the top of my list. Anything I should know about them?
moonluv810 11-11-2003, 09:42 PM They are good tires for the money, very stiff sidewall, good (not great, not excellent) grip on dry, not too noisy. Treadlife is so so (with your drag racing habit, you probably could burn the rears in every 5k miles, if you're lucky :)). Wet handling? Don't ask, because you don't want to know.
94E36-325is 11-12-2003, 01:51 AM Wet handling is just good for the lack of torque I have to appease the drifting side of me!! :D
Plus I only actually mad it to the drag strip once this year. So if I keep that up maybe they will last a little longer!!
bmw3er 11-13-2003, 02:43 PM Yea - what indi said. they actually held up very well on the track last summer. Consistant wear and all that. I wouldn't put them on anything that weighs more than E46 though. Jeff completely destroyed a set last summer on the M5. Russ Wiles told me they were the closest thing to R compounds on the track, as far as grip goes. If he thinks they are sticky, I think most people are going to agree with him. The best part about the ES100 - I only paid $112 apiece with free shipping.

I WILL be there!! Just joined bmw cca the other day too. Can't wait for next season! :alright
bmw3er 11-16-2003, 08:35 PM sweet :buttrock
Mojo325is 11-16-2003, 08:47 PM welcome aboard!
toddman35 11-17-2003, 12:08 AM Thanks guys, btw for the drivers school do you have to be 18? I'll still be 17 next summer. :az:
bmw3er 11-17-2003, 12:59 PM when is your b-day? I am pretty sure you have to be 18 because of the insurance that the cca uses for the event. You could maybe ask one of the organizers to look the other way when you write the wrong birthdate. There may be room for a small birthdate fib, as last summer my instructor decided to leave sunday morning. A guy from group 1 was allowed to instruct me, even though he was not an instructor. Kinda aginst the rules.
OR there is the septemberfest school later in the year if you will be 18 by then.
Mojo325is 11-17-2003, 04:08 PM das-
how'd the hunting go???
Dark Helmet 11-17-2003, 07:12 PM deer=dead.... :D:D:D

Other than that, it sounds fun. :D
Dark Helmet 11-18-2003, 07:15 PM think total dollars spent.... I'm not buying another $30,000 car...
I can build the 550iT for about 10-12K..... or about 20 corvairs... :D:D:D
Mr Project 11-19-2003, 06:39 PM Ok, I found your donor wagon:
http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/vdetail.jtmpl?car_id=147236903&dealer_id=75579&car_year=1995&search_type=used&make=BMW&model=&transmission=&distance=any&address=68506&advanced=y&certified=n&max_mileage=&max_price=6000&min_price=0&end_year=2004&start_year=1983&drive=&engine=&body_style=WAGON&advcd_on=y&doors=&fuel=&color=&cardist=878
It's a 530iT, so it has the engine compartment already set up for a V8, which would make the V12 fitment easier (brake booster behind the headlight instead of off the firewall, etc). Plus, it's a 95, which means the best electronics, wide kidneys and hood, painted GFX, etc. 174k almost has to mean that it's aready Alusil, so you could probably sell the motor to some poor Nikasil soul.
Mojo325is 11-19-2003, 07:43 PM mmmmmmm.............v12!!!!!!!!!!
Dark Helmet 11-20-2003, 01:02 PM .... interesting... veeeeeeeeeeeeeery interesting...
I could have that thing in the driveway for abot $6,000... (truth be told, rather have a nikasil "doesn't run" special for $3000).
she could even drive that until I have the new motor ready... as I said.... veeeeeeeery interesting...
Mr Project 11-20-2003, 01:04 PM C'mon man, go buy that donor already so we can pick it up before it gets cold. :) Plus, you could drive it as-is for the next year or so until Brenda is ready, while you're converting the E28 into a dedicated track car.
Oh, yeah, I've got this all figgered out for ya!
Dark Helmet 11-20-2003, 01:52 PM I don't have THAT much money man... we're closing in on a home equity line in the next few months, that will at least clean up the picture (I hate health care...), we'll start looking for an E39 buyer soon as well and from there picking up a solid 525 or 530 touring will be the first step. if it runs I'll just have her drive it for a while, if not, we'll have to hold onto the E39 until we have a third car lined up (might be buying my dad's truck sometime next year).
if you know anyone who wants an 18 month lease on an E39 touring, let me know! :D:D I will likely be able to sweeten the deal a little for them.
(I'd really love to knock $250 a month off her car payment and have her drive the truck!)
