OK, I am bad and NOT doing a search since I HATE that function on here. If there was already a thread about this before, just link me to it and flame away please!

I blew up the motor in my M3 at Willow Springs over the weekend and will be building a new one almost from scratch. Are there any parts that I could use on my 320i?

And before anybody says rebuild it and put it into the 320, I threw a rod out the side of the block, so that idea is basically shot. We are hoping that the head might be salvaged for the new motor, but won't know for sure until everything gets torn down. At that point, at least one of the rods and one of the pistons is a loss. Not sure about anything else, including the oil pump which was mentioned on another thread (and why I'm starting this one).

Does anybody have a list of what will swap over? I might just have to either ask TEP or Trent at Apex Motorsports, since both of them know a bit about both motors. BTW, Trent and Apex will be helping me build the S14....in case you're interested (and know them).

TIA, and may the spirit of my dearly departed S14 live on....in two cars if possible!

send BMWClubracer@aol.com an email, he has a lot of information on the S14 motor, he is rebuilding his, so he can give you some pointers and answer your questions

Damn, I don't have anything to add...Just thought I'd say ouch and offer my condolences. Hopefully you got a few good laps before she disintegrated.

Well, that and quad throttle bodies on an M10 would be really cool, although it might be a bit much for the motor...the underhood eye candy would be great.

ah man bummer about the motor.....i saw that pic u posted on the e30 forum :(

see post #43 & 44.......ignore that first sentence in my post tho :stickoutt (http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?postid=1510994#post1510994)

and if u end up getting a whole s14 engine for ur e30 m3....ur old s14 head can bolt on to the m10 but some coolant & oil passages are said to be slightly different......and u can't bore out the m10 block much further (i believe 92mm is max....and even that is pushing the limits).

Geeez, sorry to hear that Doug. I really want to know this too. Does the head really bolt onto the M10 block? what would have to be done so it will work?

Several things come to mind..... use the crank and front pully to create a stroker engine. The starter fits. It is smaller and easier to get to. Also, the oil filter housing can be used. Allows you to add an oil cooler. The housing also has a thermostat in it.

Thanks all. I've been trying to figure out what to do with the M3, since I am GOING to keep it, just have to figure the motor issue out.

If the head will bolt to the block and make a strocker, that might be the best idea. I had been thinking about doing the M42 swap from my 318iS (getting a newer motor for that car eventually), but an M10 with twin cams would be SOOO pimp. Not to mention I COULD use the throttle bodies and intake system from the M3, since it is going to get an Alpha N set-up with larger throttle bodies. I'm hoping that the crank is still good, since a rod came out the side of the block. We'll see what is still salvageable after the car gets down to SD and the motor is torn down. There's no joy in Mudville for the rest of the year.

And yes, I got some good laps in before it went pop. I got all day Saturday and got the new AC for the block half way through Sunday, minutes before lunch. "Look at that kid that blew up his motor in that old BMW." "....yeah, but he passed the Murcielago yesterday...."

Anyway, just looking for ideas before taking the motor apart and deciding that good parts are 'useless' and can be sold off.

if you dont mind me asking, was it a mechanical failure or driver error? do you know the complete cause?

i commonly assume that a con rod through the block = overrev on downshift :D

So the head WILL fit the M10?? If you I think I need to find one.
