View Full Version : Someone talk me out of pursuing this 635
evlgt85 11-06-2003, 12:56 PM I'm looking for a daily driver. Mostly been considering Lincoln Mark VIIIs, but decided to give Auto Trader a whirl on BMWs of varying types. And I find this: http://autotrader.com/findacar/vdetail.jtmpl?car_id=143103667&dealer_id=87389&car_year=1985&make=BMW&distance=25&max_price=15000&model=&advcd_on=n&end_year=2004&min_price=0&first_record=176&certified=n&address=85282&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1983&=&color=&cardist=14
Don't know what he means by M package, but I know it's not an M6 (I will have one someday, I have vowed this). I know it's an auto, which I'm not thrilled with, but heck...I've been looking at Mark VIIIs, and they're autos, too.
And this thing is dirt cheap...what do I need to be suspicious of?
Talk me out of it soon, or I'm going to call on it and likely pick it up. LOL! Nah, I don't want to make an uninformed and split-second decision, but...damn...it doesn't look bad. Anyone seeing stuff in the pics that I can't see? More pics are available in a link just above the photo in the ad.
jcsomerset 11-06-2003, 01:32 PM Looks like a fairly clean car..
"M" package is crap.. looks like someone has created an "M clone" W/ the badging on the front and maybe rear spoiler.. that's probably about it... They NEVER made an Auto M6, and there was no "M package" or sport package offered...
Try here:
http://www.normgrills.net/bcg/
for some good info.
www.roadfly.org has a good active 6er board (I'm over there a lot too)
Also - www.bigcoupe.com has good info.
THere should be a link to a "buyer's checklist" for 6ers somewhere..
W/ that kind of mileage, you'll want to make sure maintenance is up to date and that the car hasn't been someone's Yard ornament for years....(with that mileage, I doubt it)
Yard ornaments =- money pits. (I have almost as much in my 633 that was a prior Yard ornament as I bought the M6 for)
Well maintained cars are still Very nice, reliable daily drivers.
The dash almost always cracks on these as old as they are...esp in AZ, i'd bet it's pretty bad..
Otherwise looks like a fair deal.
For that price I'd expect bad seats or interior, maybe sunroof not working, cruise inoperable.. etc.... maybe A/C shot.. Mechanics and driveline should be solid..
evlgt85 11-06-2003, 02:00 PM Thanks for the quick response. I'm currently asking around for local BMW places that are familiar with the older cars in case I happen upon others. I'd definitely have it inspected by someone in the know before purchasing. They claim everything works well, but we all know how far car lot claims go.
Looks like the driver's seat is probably trashed, as the pic shows a cover on it.
First thing I'd do is pull the ///M6 badge off and put it on my tool box or something. Can't stand fake badged cars.
But, I don't need another money pit. I have two of them currently. The GT isn't unreliable...it's just not daily driver material any more...and I can't stop fiddling with it.
I'll start reading up on those links. Looks like it'll be another productive day at the office. Ha!
jcsomerset 11-06-2003, 03:15 PM Definate pre-purchase inspection W/ shop that is knowledgable..
those trannies will go if someone revs them in neutral too much -
but as long as they've been maintained well, they are good reliable cars...
jcsomerset 11-06-2003, 03:25 PM THought I'd add this in a separate post.
They are Hella easy to turbo - TCD is designing a bolt on Kit.
:buttrock :buttrock :devillook
evlgt85 11-06-2003, 03:47 PM Don't you start on that!! Don't!!! I have promised Mike that I WON'T mess with this car if I get it! Tempt me not! LOL! He's been against my considering a 6 due to his being convinced I'd start in on it just like everything else. I've sworn that I would not do that to a "regular" 6. Our conversation this morning about this particular car was both pathetic and comedic.
The turbo will be for the future M6 in my life. Hehe. Ahhh...someday...
jcsomerset 11-06-2003, 04:02 PM I love my M6, and will maybe turbo it when I get everything else done I want to do to it.. suspension, exhaust and exhaust cam gear, maybe redesign the stock CAI on there... My girlfriend knows I'm having a Love affair with my car and she's OK with that.. I love(d) my 633 almost as much as I do the M and regret that I have to sell it.. I'd Love to turbo an M30 as well.. you can take those stock 3.5 M30s and make M killers out of them WAYY!! easy..
:evil2
evlgt85 11-06-2003, 04:48 PM Mike and I have an amazing collection of car magazines going back through the ages. He found one from way back when about the Dinan turbo kit for the M6...I may have scanned it and posted it here at some point...thing was a BEAST. Ran mid 12s in the quarter mile and still kept all of it's refinements. Talk about the stuff of dreams...
evlgt85 11-06-2003, 05:01 PM Yep...found it... http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58252
jcsomerset 11-06-2003, 05:15 PM I think I remember that post.. I just copied the article to my computer :D Nice Article too.
At My Mom's house a few months ago, I dug out a bunch of old
R & T's one had the M6 in "The 10 fastest production cars in the world" or something like that. I think there was another M6 article too.
I did find some stuff on E30's and the 8-series I think I remember an article about the E30 M3 evo (yes they did make such a critter, or prototype anyway, I'm not all that up on my E30 production history)
I've got to get them next time I go down.. may e-bay the 8 series ones and maybe the E30 ones as well. not selling the ones W/ the M6 though..
e34 biturbo had a twin-turbo set up for an S38 a few weeks ago.. i wish I had fundage.. :sigh:
evlgt85 11-06-2003, 10:23 PM When I find more stuff later on, I'll scan it and post it. We're going to have a magazine and book case made some time soon, I hope. And when that happens, we'll HAVE to go through and organize the magazines. This, of course, means reading every flippin' one of 'em.
Think it'd be inappropriate to TTT all the threads with the scans in 'em? Just to bring 'em about for those who might have missed them?
jcsomerset 11-07-2003, 10:23 AM You or I might get a "repost" flame a time or two.. but with as much traffic as is on this board, I think folks would appreciate it.
Any E30 or E36 article would of course, get bunches of hits.
evlgt85 11-07-2003, 11:24 AM Well, tisn't exactly a repost, just bringing it to the top, right? :)
I also will be posting my 6 pics from Monterey. :)
evlgt85 11-09-2003, 08:55 PM It's already gone :(
jcsomerset 11-10-2003, 10:24 AM I"m sorry dude, I guess this particular car and you were not meant to be together.
Right before I got my '84 633 last year, I looked at a '74 2002 Tii for sale, that I was VERY interested in. Long story short, the idiot bastage sold it out from under me even though I had told him that if he got to a push to shove point W/ it to call me. about 2 weeks later, I found the gray 6er in the paper - I haven't looked back since.
SilverStreak 11-13-2003, 05:52 PM Skye is a Dudette, John, and she rocks! :guitarist
She's the reason I'm here, by the way... :D
Skye, John is selling his 6er... (not the M)... timing is wonky for me right now, but if you're in the market, it's a nice car... if he still has it in a little while when I get paid some overdue contracts, I may snap it up myself....
jcsomerset 11-13-2003, 06:48 PM A dudette Huh? :devillook
Hot Girls in 6ers = :boink
Good luck on the search BTW - Let me know if I can help... :D
evlgt85 11-13-2003, 09:19 PM Ahh, I'm found out. :12:
Howya doin' Dave? 29xxx posts? Good LORD man! LMAO!
Anyway, on the car search, I gotta stick with local cars (300 mile radius, really). Looks like right now I'm contemplating 93-96 Lincoln Mark VIIIs, 6ers, and contemplating 80s era 3s and 5s. I'd take an 8 (lawdy are they ever sexy), but heaven knows there aren't any in my price range (I'd like to keep it under ten grand, it's gonna be a daily driver so I can stop driving something with no front sway bar, no a/c, manual steering, drag radials, 4.10s and a double pumper). Since I'm used to such a...no nonsense car, I'm really wanting to swing to the other end of the spectrum and get something nice and cushy, but not boring and bland.
Found another 6, but this one has 235,000 on it. Yikes! Although, it seems to be an enthusiast's car as it has plates that say Shark 6...might call on it. Dunno.
So, yeah, if you see something wearing the Roundel that is in AZ and seems to be a good deal, please let me know. :)
jcsomerset 11-14-2003, 10:36 AM I-10 runs near Phoneix doesn't it... WE could meet halfway in Texas somewhere.. :biglaughB That's when these 6ers really shine is on the highway...the 633 will hit 100 quick enough to startle you as well... and has surprising torque in 5th at highway speeds.. about 23-24 mpg on the highway..
SilverStreak 11-14-2003, 12:45 PM Skye, Jer (aka "dasMafia") would deliver it to you... :D
29K posts, yeah, no kidding, working from home since 2000, on the phone all day long, posting while I talk, etc, plus moderating 5-6 forums has it's way of upping your post count...
But before I get accused of having no life, :D , I rarely, if ever post in the evenings or on weekends, it's mostly when I'm working (which I'll admit, is too often since the economy tanked), M-F, 7-7, here in my office, etc...
