View Full Version : Added CAI, and your car is still in "Stock" Class?
archyx 11-06-2003, 03:31 AM In AutoCross events, if you have put a CAI there, is your car still in the stock class? (The CAI is NOT doing anything there horsepower-wise, but just add some sound.)
Also, can I take the rear seat off in an autocross event and still be classified as stock?
John V 11-06-2003, 08:13 AM Under SCCA rules, No and No.

vjlax18 11-06-2003, 10:13 AM The SCCA rules apply to all car makes, not just BMW. While the CAI on your car may only give 5hp, a CAI on a C4 Corvette gives 20hp. So in order to be fair, they are not allowed. And rear seat removal will through you in the SM class.

if you are running locally and for fun, then you can get away with it. if you are competing at a national or regional event then you will get protested.
archyx 11-06-2003, 01:53 PM I'm planning to put a CAI on my car as soon as the rain stops here in east coast. But well, now it sounds that I'll have to put off till after my first autoX event!
BTW, driving a stock 328i is so quiet. When racing with my roommate's RX-7 and Probe GT, all I can hear are their car's sounds. If I'm not looking at the tachometer, I don't even know where to shift due to the other car's noise are over yours. :(

What does rain have to do with it?

After you've done it once, it's literally a 10-15 minute procedure. Why not just switch between the stock airbox and the CAI when you need to for auto-x?
John V 11-06-2003, 02:37 PM Probably doesn't have a garage and doesn't like working in the rain (natch). BTDT.. no fun.

archyx 11-06-2003, 03:20 PM Like SoloII///M said, I live in apartments, no garage. :( And the CAI is my first real mod. I'm a complete novice in modding cars and race. (except that I do a some trafficlight-to-trafficelight races with my friends.)
B.Watts 11-06-2003, 03:25 PM Cool - I thought you were implying that you couldn't run a CAI in the rain. ;)
BTW, it's beaultiful here on my part of the East Coast. It's 82 degrees and sunny right now and has been since last Friday!!
John V 11-06-2003, 04:58 PM Bryan, it's been nice and warm here since last weekend but it started raining yesterday and hasn't let up since. Major bummer. It's supposed to drop down to the low 40's this weekend.
:(

document 11-07-2003, 04:00 PM If it's your first autox, I would suggest not worrying about swapping out the CAI. Either run in stock and don't tell anyone, or run in prepared, if you're concerned about somehow getting busted. You are probably equally likely to win either.
