I was just hoping that I could maybe get some advice on what to do. I love cars (obviously Bimmers) and want to pursue a career that deals with FI on European cars. Hopefully someday having my own company such as AA. The problem is I am an 11th grade student and have no idea where to start or what to do :dunno . I hope you guys can give me some advice on what to do. Such as what type of college/courses I should take, any recommendations on good books to read that will help me become more knowledgeable about FI, and any advice in general. Please give advice and not just flame the hell out of me. This may sound like a stupid question but I am serious about this. Thanks

hm, you may find better info in your local guidance counselers office than here.

you have a very strange idea for a company, but i guess an AA somewhere besides florida would work.

Read everything you can find on the internet about turbocharging. then read a few books, look them up at amazon.com or wherever.

haha well I don't want an AA i want my own company that makes turbos, SC's, and other goodies like AA does. I tried to get info from my guidance counseler but she wasn't much help.

i know, i meant the equivalent of AA, but your own.

AA doesnt actually make turbos or SC, they sell kits they put together from other companies items.

garrett, vortech and others make the actual peices

well I knew they didn't actually manufacture their own turbos and stuff but you know what I meant haha

I just want to know where a good place to start would be. Like should I take business classes when I go to college or go to a school such as UTI and become a BMW tech? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

your best bet is to choose one car maker such as, BMW and go through their program that makes you become a master mechanic for BMW and then open up your own shop later down the road...

Luke, my best advice is to become very familiar with cars, work on them as much as possible. Forums aren't a good place to learn real, solid information so don't spend too much time trying to garner information from them. Just wrench, learn. Go become a mechanical engineer and learn the fundementals of why things work, then apply that to cars. You'll most certainly be best off studying engineering or automotive systems at a tech school.

I think I'm hearing a budding Mech Eng:)

try mechanical engineering in university. Also make sure you understand and can do well in all your high school maths (get aftercalss help if need be, you'll be building on all your current math knowledge).

If your school offers a "calculus" course take that too, a head start on some of that 1st year stuff would've been real nice.:(

After that you will be well armed to do most anything you want..... If being a geer doesn't pan out the BMW master mechanic sounds like a great 2nd option too!

I disagree. I think forums are an excellent source for information so long as it is supplemented with real hands-on experience. Luke, you're in PA? Lincoln Tech in NYC has an excellent program with placement into the BMW step program (I think this is what BMW calls it?). If you are sold on working on cars, instead of attending college, I would attend a technical school like Lincoln Tech. You can apply for financial aid, the school costs something like 20 grand a year, and from my understanding you are ASE certified when finished.

but as making your own company goes there are two routs you ofer the same products as everyone else at at better price and with better quality or you offer new and inovative products that come from creative thinking.(i like the later)
