View Full Version : Installfest! Woo!
BimmerDawg 11-04-2003, 09:00 AM Marco (ARCPolo) has agreed to let us use his driveway and garage yet again for another Installfest! This one will be Sunday, November 23rd at 1:00 p.m. at Marco's place in Kennesaw, just off of Barrett Parkway.
Bring all of your parts that need to be affixed to your ride, you tools, and anything else that you feel might be necessary (see also: beer :D ).
So, let us know if you can make it, and also post what it is that you'll be putting on, so we can plan accordingly.
And always remember: Lefty loosie, right tighty. :laugh
UR2SLOW 11-04-2003, 09:17 AM Just as long as you quit looking at Aaron's tool!!!!!
punknamedjimmy 11-04-2003, 09:33 AM NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
i'm doing my bmw driving school that day.

Ron17 11-04-2003, 11:30 AM So... at the installfest, I might be doing things like:
- Thermostat & Housing
- Tranny Mounts (Micah, when those comin' in? :D )
- O2 and/or Knock Sensor(s)
- Oil Change
- RSMs (pain in my ass, because I have to remove the speakers)

Don't even go there... I had to take my whole freaking rear hatch apart. NIGHTMARE.
I'd love to do O2 sensors. Can anyone get with me one night or weekend to help me figure out which one(s) is/are fried?
I will also need some help installing my
GE90 (http://www.geae.com/engines/commercial/ge90/index.html)
rwindleyme02 11-04-2003, 11:41 AM I'm a pro at troubleshooting O2 sensors now. Is you CE light on?
I also have the O2 Sensor socket if you need one.

Talk to Marco -- he has a Peake Research code reader.
As for your GE90, I think you'll probably need a few hoses and T joints from Home Depot. We can make this work.
Bremsen 11-04-2003, 12:57 PM I don't think I'll have anything to install.....but I will most likely show up to lend my expertise (at a minimal charge of course :D).
Besides, I have to see what I can steal from Marco's garage. ;)
Ron17 11-04-2003, 01:03 PM Bumper cover? Nope -- already done that. :D
craaaazzy 11-04-2003, 01:17 PM aaron, everything you have listed is pretty easy, even the rsm's. the worst one are the knock sensors. expect at least 2 hours doing those...have fun!
craaaazzy 11-04-2003, 01:19 PM btw - marco does have the peake tool but does not have the manual for it so if anyone has that, bring it
Bremsen 11-04-2003, 01:25 PM I have the basic reset/reader tool with instructions. Don't know if that'll work for ya.
count_schemula 11-04-2003, 01:27 PM Are the peake codes on the Internet somewhere?
If I buy all 4 O2 sensors, think I can return the ones I don't need without a restocking fee? Otherwise I have to figure out which one(s) is/are toast beforehand.
My CEL comes on sometimes, always after a "spirited drive." Not every spirited drive, but only after one, never after a normal drive. It goes off after a few good starts. It seems down on power and the mileage sucks when the CEL is tripped, then it's ok again.
At the drag strip I could turn a 16 if my CEL wigs out...
Ron17 11-04-2003, 02:08 PM Danny, just remind Marco to bring the Peake tool with him on Friday and we'll pull your codes then. That'll give you time to look them up somewhere (or post in the forum and ask), order whatever parts you need and get them in time for the installfest.
PS -- You could turn a 16 even if it doesn't. ;)
5500 RPM.
Drop the clutch.
Spin the tires.
16.xx @ 86.xx MPH :)
count_schemula 11-04-2003, 02:16 PM Can you break a guibo doing this? I know mine is less than perfect. WTF is a guibo anyhow? Something to smooth driveline lash?
neilm3 11-04-2003, 02:20 PM Not sure if I can make it this time around, but I'll try and stop by.
Here's a site where you can lookup the fault codes:

I doubt you could break a guibo like this. We don't have enough torque or grippy enough tires to do that. You could shorten its life, I would think.
Guibo = Flex Disk = Rubber chunk to reduce driveline harshness.
It's a damper between the tranny and the rear end.
That's a funny word -- Guibo.

ARCpolo 11-04-2003, 03:56 PM Ok one rule, no biohazard materials accidently spilled on my driveway/ garage/ lawn, etc. That includes coolent, engine oil, race fuel, empty beer bottles etc, etc. - learn from last experience. Also bring all the beer you can drink, all the food you can chowdown, all the tool you can break, and all the entertainment you can provide ( not every lady is as mechanically inclined as Nancy )
Well thats it for now anyway.
P.S. no E30 is allowed on the vacinity (Geordie) or be prepared to be towed @ owners expenses.
alfatech 11-04-2003, 04:35 PM anyone got an airbag reset tool? stupid light has been on for months

Nice.
punknamedjimmy 11-04-2003, 05:15 PM i missed the joke about the e30 i guess.
when i'm doing the actual driving part of my driving school i plan on going absolutely nuts.
how often do you get to drive someone elses BMW as hard as you can?
I'll be there. Finally got my car running and I got an alignment at butler. I've calculated everything and i've spent over $4k because of that ditch. I can help people install basically anything that they need help with. RSM's are very easy? I can do the whole thing using only the tools in the trunklid in 30-45 minutes. Which reminds me, on the locking nuts in the rear, after having z3 plates welded in, and my rear strut bar, there is no thread coming out of the nuts. Is this bad?
count_schemula 11-04-2003, 06:42 PM out out damn ditch...
$4k, eek... glad you got it back in fairly short order though... :D
well i replaced some parts that didn't really need replacing (the hood, both fenders, rear bumper, etc) But after wheel refinishing, bodywork, paint, panels, suspension, plastic pieces, alignment, tire, towing, (paying some hick to get my car out of a ditch  ) and other shit its easily over 4k :( and its not ready yet, i'm still waiting for everything to be painted. but my cars still driveable, although with a dented door and fender. Ditch-1 Ali-0
Ron17 11-04-2003, 06:59 PM Ali, that's fine. The way that screws and nuts/bolts work, you actually have your maximum holding strength after a very small number of turns thru the threads. I wanna say it might even be as little as one full turn...
Anyways, the only reason you tighten down more is to keep it from back off the threads. You're well past maximum holding strength, so don't worry about it not showing threads out the top.

yeah, i totally forgot they were locking nuts and after i took them off I remembered so i reused them  so i got to make a trip to united or global and get some new ones. I'm soo broke right now, anyone wanna help me install a track pipe?
I wanna say it might even be as little as one full turn...
Man... they did teach you EE's just enough ME stuff to be dangerous didn't they?!?! :D
Ali, as long as all the threads in the nut are in contact with the bolt you are golden. Any additional threads coming out the top of the nut are unnecessary.
...if the nut is going to back off, it's because it gets untorqued initially then gets pushed out. If the nut is untorqued, it doesn't matter if the bolt is 1" long, or 5" long. With a constant force(and some vibrations usually) it can still be pushed out over time.
Thanks to Geordie for organizing this and to Marco for hosting it yet again!
I'll be doing the RSMs and an X-brace.
cal you still riding around on those broke ass RSM's  ? doode you're going to rip the sheet metal on the rear shock towers. How are the ellipsoids going? Get clears yet?
Ron17 11-04-2003, 11:49 PM :(
I could've sworn my roommate (who was an ME at Tech) told me something to that effect -- that max "holding" strength is reached after few turns. That's not to say that you should only turn a bolt one-two turns into a nut, because it'll just back out. Anyways...
Yeah, well... uhhhh... why don't you tell me what happens at the interface of a PN junction diode when it reaches breakdown voltage? Huhh? Huhh?
Smart boy! ;)
Yeah, well... uhhhh... why don't you tell me what happens at the interface of a PN junction diode when it reaches breakdown voltage? Huhh? Huhh?
I'm smart enough to know when I'm not smart enough to answer, unlike SOME people. :)
As for the bolt, it is a complex issue like it usually is with mechanics of materials problems. For straight uniaxial tension, assuming no deformation of the few threads in contact, then yes, you'd have the same cross sectional area resisting the "pulling one end from the other" action. Although for stress in any other plane, you are going to have a shear component to deal with(think of snapping into a Slim Jim for a good shear demonstration:D), and you are greatly reducing the projected area this stress is acting on by only screwing the bolt in a little bit. All this is really academic though, as the threads would most likely deform in a mild steel bolt with only a few contacting the nut under any appreciable stess and vibration.
As for the junction, just a guess from the few circuits I've had, but isn't that the energy level when the electrons can now make the discrete jump from one doping to another? Or am I completely off?
I hate circuits btw, only one more class to go tho'... :az:
Infernal_Halo 11-05-2003, 05:15 AM I may be able to make it to this event.... if M3motorwerks will ever ship me my stuff...:D I also need to install me new x-brace and do a few other things to clean the ol ///M up a lil bit. Apart from that.... I'll think about it
bcart1991 11-05-2003, 10:55 AM Dang, nothing to install...
Sorry I missed dinner Monday, Rachael got home late and wasn't feeling too well (long weekend)...next time.

Off. :)
Ron17 11-05-2003, 11:07 AM And the list grows... :D
- Thermostat & Housing
- Rogue Tranny Mounts
- O2 and/or Knock Sensor(s)
- Oil Change
- RSMs (pain in my ass, because I have to remove the speakers)
- Brake pads
- JTD Underpanel install
G. P. Burdell 11-05-2003, 11:27 AM Aaron - Remember my co-worker, who bought your M3 muffler? He has a laundry list of things he needs help fixing on his '95 325i, including a new water pump, thermostat, brake light switch, and valve cover gasket. I've told him to sign up on Bimmerforums so he can come join the discussion. Just a heads-up.
Ron17 11-05-2003, 11:34 AM Yeah... Tony. How's he likin' the M3 muffler? My guess is that he's enjoying it, because that was one thing I always liked about the stock muffler on the M3s -- they sound so great. I'd also figure they flow a little more freely than the 32x mufflers.
Anyways, yeah, have him sign up and head over. The cooling system is a pain if you've never done it before and there will be numerous people who could assist.
Brake Light Switch -- PITA!!! I took yoga classes for three months before attempting this fix just to be able to contort my body into the necessary positions to do this thing. :D
Never done a valve cover gasket.
ARCpolo 11-05-2003, 12:27 PM damn Aaron, we probably need the whole weekend just to accomodate all your list of to-do's...
-Thermostat & Housing - 1.5 hrs?
- Rogue Tranny Mounts - 20 mins
- O2 and/or Knock Sensor(s) - 3 hrs?
- Oil Change - 15 mins
- RSMs (pain in my ass, because I have to remove the speakers) - 1 hr
- Brake pads - 1 hr
- JTD Underpanel install - 1 hr?
Valve Gasket Cover is easy, 30 mins job.

Ron17 11-05-2003, 12:33 PM Go ahead and end that process before you even begin it.
Marco, that's not the actual list -- it's just a possible list. I doubt I'll end up doing all those things... just most of them.

As for the "Brake light circuit", have him read this one the forums:
WIRING PROBLEMS (http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79896)
Mine was messed up, and ended up fixing my "Brake light circuit" AND "License plate light" problems.
HTH
BTW: I have an air compressor & tools, but the only thing I need done is the SRS light reset.
G. P. Burdell 11-05-2003, 01:17 PM Thanks for the tip, UR2SLOW. He's already bought a new switch, so I guess he'll just have to see what happens after he installs it. I've told him about the trunk wiring thing and shown him the frayed harness from my car. I posted some pictures of it to that thread.
///M3Hellrot 11-05-2003, 02:21 PM I installed my ZKWs that I bought from Ali and now nothing works! Somewhere in the process I think I fried a couple fuses because they were working when I tested them before putting them in the car. I bought Umnitza's PnP adaptors and never did anything with the extra yellow wires b/c Dado from DTMpower told me they were just used for Halos. Should i have grounded these wires? I don't know anything about wiring/electricity.
If I can't get them fixed myself I may have to mosie on over to Marco's for this.
Get the P-N Diode boy to help ya out with the ZKW wiring. :stickoutt

My "Brake light circuit" failure wasn't constant and seemed to come on only after I got gas....... I have to open the trunk and pull the manual handle to open the fuel door. When I read about the wiring problem, I had to check out the wires first.
caravaggio 11-05-2003, 03:11 PM Hello bimmerphiles,
ummm ...... I have a need to replace a number of parts in my 1995 325i; these include:
- thermostat & aluminum thermostat housing
- water pump
- set of profile gaskets for cylinder head cover & rubber sealing
- break light switch
I do not have appropriate tools and would appreciate any skilled help I can get.
I live near Kennesaw and will bring the appropriate car parts (and all the beer you can drink :awink:
Ron17 11-05-2003, 03:17 PM Hey, Tony... Aaron here.
We'll be there throughout the day on the 23rd, so you're welcome to come by. Marco was gracious enough to open up his house and driveway to us, so we have ample space to work.
We'll have him post directions as the date draws near.
We grilled out last time and consumed beer. A good time was had by all. :)

I do like the M3 muffler and not just the sound ... the back end seems sturdier and maybe I even sense a little performance boost, am I dreaming?
Anyway, yeah ... if you and your buddies have time to get to at least some of the things I listed ... that would be fantastic .... by the way James really did a great job installing my muffler .... however, I am stuck with two brand new M3 muffler hangers that I can't use ... I'll give them away to the first person who volunteers to help me. Thanks again

Ron17 11-05-2003, 05:26 PM Fred/Marco,
Where did you buy the knock sensor for Fred's car? I've looked on www.thepartsbin.com and www.bimmerparts.com and neither of them have it.
I'd rather not buy from the dealership.
craaaazzy 11-05-2003, 05:39 PM call either...i got mine from partsbin. had to call cause the knock sensors were not listed. 3.2 and 3.0 sensors are different.
craaaazzy 11-05-2003, 05:40 PM btw, they came out to be something like $100 shipped for both.
Ron17 11-05-2003, 05:48 PM Yeah... they're $60 apiece for the 3.0L. I just called.
I think it's weird they don't have those on the website. Oh, well.

Micah D. Cranman 11-05-2003, 06:23 PM Wanna buy mine? Seriously wouldn't mind selling it as I need to generate cash -- want to do an advertising push for the launch of the new site, and I don't forsee me going to the track in the near future, so I wouldn't mind getting rid of this one.

I'll lend a hand if I'm not busy doing stuff on my own car at the Installfest, but you're welcome to use my socket set. It's got most the metric stuff you should need. Otherwise there are probably plenty of people there with lots of mechanical experience that will be willing to lend a hand and help you through it. All the stuff you listed doesn't seem that hard of an install, just gotta take your time and work through it.
As for the brake light circuit, get a midget(*cough*Geordie! *cough*) to squeeze up in there and save your back. I did clutch arm bushings and the hardest part was positioning yourself.
PS. I'm in dire need of new M3 muffler/exhaust hangers!
I'm either doing
-brake pads
-H&R Sport springs (maybe)
-might do coolant flush, but this is a big maybe
If I get daring I might take my manifold off and just go crazy with the RTV sealant to get rid of this slight vacuum leak I've got. Or I might try to monkey around with it after taking off my throttle body, but man there is NO room down there!

Brake ducts go from behind your radiator opening in your front bumper to the hub area. So yes, they should work if the bumper has a similar sized radiator opening to the factor M3 bumper.
ARCpolo 11-05-2003, 06:54 PM Guys, I am leaning towards the bolt-on mods/replacement parts for the DIY install fest I am hosting, MEANING: anything from tranny mount, suspension mods, brake jobs to knock sensors. I was kind enough to even offer my grass to die for the expense of coolent. However, I will not allow any oil changes activity on my driveway simply because I know oil stains are extremely difficult to remove, and no matter how careful you can be, spills are prone to happen. Therefore, no oil change will be allowed on my driveway, sorry for the inconvenient guys.
alfatech 11-05-2003, 08:02 PM well, I'll be moving into my new house in december and I'll be happy to host another install fest in january for everyone to install their nice christmas or chaunaka or kwanza or festivus goodies :)
Micah D. Cranman 11-05-2003, 08:20 PM Marco, we totally understand. I wouldn't want oil stains either, so it's done, folks -- no oil changes, no coolant, no fluids. :D
alfatech 11-05-2003, 08:21 PM side note, how do you check tranny fluid on our whips?
ARCpolo 11-05-2003, 08:58 PM open up the refill plug when the car is level. It should filled up to a point where extra tranny fluid will be leaking out of the fill plug hole.

I got the lights to work and just like we thought, one of the bulbs isn't the bluish tint, it is yellow/white. It looks kinda funny with 3 blue and 1 white. Oh well, I really like the city lights in there. They look really cool. All I need to do now is get them leveled. I think they are pointing WAY too high. Anyone have tips on this? Another thing, my control says there is a brake light circuit out. My main brake lights work but my spoiler light and my upper central light in the rear window do not. It isn't a big deal but how do I fix those? :95
yumyum1667 11-05-2003, 10:51 PM Guys now we are talking. Sounds like a lot of fun. It was good seeing everyone Monday. I'm the new guy but am slowly putting names to the faces.
I will be there to give a hand. I had some jack stands built that fit the hockey pucks perfectly if anyone wants to use them. I don't really have anything to do except change the belts. I am up to date on everything else.
Greg
P.S. There is a record label showcase/party that my band is playing Friday November 14th if anyone wants details. The show is intown and did I mention there is free beer?

check out what brand bulb it is and see if you can get just one. Did you leave your factory adjusters at what they were set to? aiming them is a bitch, but its not that hard to do if you have a level surface and a flat spot to point your headlight to. then aim them using the adjustments for optimal lighting. Thats really wierd how your 3rd brake light and your spoiler light don't work :95
so, hows the post count going?
rwindleyme02 11-06-2003, 11:17 AM If I end up coming could someone bring some brake pad goop? My front brakes are squealing after the drive. Thanks.

1304 behind Cali as of this post. ;)
Ron17 11-06-2003, 11:31 AM Brake Light Circuit is a faulty switch that rests above your brake pedal. It's a PAIN to contrort yourself into the right position to change it, but it's a definite DIY.
$35 from the $tealership, IIRC. Buy one and bring it along -- I can do it and I'm sure there's others there who could, as well.

Jacob, you can have my brand-new, never used M3 muffler hangers, and in exchange you will ?????

Hey Greg, tell us more about this record label showcase/party on Nov. 14 ..... by the way, do you have a band? I'm looking for a few good men or women who want to jam ..... I'm an old timer, play the guitar, and can do justice to the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and all the rest of those mummified bands
Tony
yumyum1667 11-06-2003, 02:34 PM Ryan,

WytLytnyn 11-10-2003, 03:49 PM Hey guys...another BMW newbie here that would like to join you.
I've been having a real pain trying to change the Microfilter on my E36 (stop laughing, please.)
I cant get the little black module to unclip from the larger computer assembly (underneath the airbag) so I can slide out the filter. What is the trick to this?
Also, a buddy and I may join you guys for Installfest so we can put on newly purchased x-braces on E-36's. Another guy I work with wants to replace the instrument cluster on his e-38.
Look forward to meeting you guys....

I can help out with most the things you would likely need done on your car. Not saying I'll have the time to do them, but I'll let you use my tools and show you how it's done.
You know that saying about, give a man a fish... one day... teach him to fish yada yada. :D
I mean, hell, I'll let you drink off whatever cheap beer I got with me if you still feel you need more compensation as well. :laugh
Microfilter is cake, but that reminds me, I need to replace mine as well. I will do it over Thanksgiving though.
BTW - there is no need to take out the glovebox to replace the microfilter.
WytLytnyn 11-10-2003, 04:38 PM Ummm....then how do you get behind the central console to remove the filter?:95
Ron17 11-10-2003, 04:41 PM Yoga...
if my cars back from the bodyshop by then I will be installing something :dunno maybe we can all pitch in and help me install some headers
yumyum1667 11-10-2003, 10:04 PM Aaron is right Yoga.
I don't remember removing all of my glove box but it will be easier if you do so. I will be glad to show you how to do it. It is not really hard. Just a lot of wiggling.
Be sure to break the new filter at the parts that separate before you put it end because you have to bend it to fit in.

Take out footwell panel below glovebox w/ 1 or 2 screws holding it in. Pull out foot air duct. You now have a straight shot to the microfilter door. Turn the 'lock' mechanism, take door out. Pull out the old filter. This is somewhat tight, but don't worry about killing this filter as you're not going to reuse it.
Break new filter in 3 parts, wiggle it in there carefully.
Replace all components and button 'er up.
That's the general jist of the procedure. Showing you makes it even easier. I did mine the first time in about 20-25 mins taking it easy.

you think we could rebuild my calipers at this meet? You still interested in the front bumper?
BimmerDawg 11-11-2003, 09:34 AM Okay...here's my list of what I'm going to install...
1. NOTHING
Anyone want to donate parts so I can install them?
Ron17 11-12-2003, 04:33 PM :az:
So, I reckon I'll have to do the oil change and thermo/housing change before I get to Marco's place, since there are no [bodily] fluids allowed on his driveway.
 What a hassle!
;)

Ali, I need to have the calipers at my shop to rebuild them. Marco doesn't really have the equipment I need to do it right. I'm gonna need to have them for a full day one weekend (either sat or sun). Its not really just replacing the seals. I'll be cleaning, pressure checking them, etc. And I'll probably want an extra day if you want me to paint them for you as well.
Did you get the bumper off? If the clips and mounts etc look to be in good shape then yes I still want it. I'll pm you about it tonight or tomorrow.

Ron17 11-12-2003, 05:29 PM Don't paint them to match the rest of your car. Leave them Dakar. That's the look these days.... right? :az:

front & rear bumpers and sideskirts yellow while the rest is black.... :laugh
then all you'll need is mother teresa spray painted on your doors and flames. But as far as paint goes I can give you details about the shop i'm going to, they charge a fair price.
Bremsen 11-12-2003, 05:54 PM I've got some LED washer nozzles, valve caps and exhaust tip to complete the look. Then all you'll need is a big HERNANDEZ on the back window in gothic script. :biglaughb
lol, its soo sad to see people do that to their cars
rwindleyme02 11-17-2003, 02:56 PM Hey Ryan, is there a tool to press back the caliper to put that brake stuff on the back of the pads? Last time I used a cloth and a C-clamp.
C-clamp is the best way to go.
rwindleyme02 11-17-2003, 04:41 PM OK, I didn't know if I was damaging the seal by doing it that way.

WEB150 11-18-2003, 01:14 PM What's with getting drunk and pissing on random objects. I was having this discussion with some of my friends here in Athens and between 3 people, they have pissed on:
1. Computer
2. Nightstand drawer
3. Carpet
4. Dozens of girlfriend's shoes in her closet
I once witnessed someone drop their pants and crap in the middle of the floor @ my frat house. The guy was so drunk that he did not even remember doing it just a few minutes later.
Does alcohol cause people to see toilets everywhere they look?
rwindleyme02 11-18-2003, 01:17 PM Don't forget MARTA bus, and Mop bucket ;)
