IslandS62 10-29-2003, 03:06 PM Here are some pics of my new car! It will be my daily car and hopefully setup to run drivng schools at HRP. It a rare 91' 318is.

Interior is in perfect condition and it runs great! So much like my E30 M3 :D

Here are the immediate plans for the car...
New control arms and bushings (steering vibrates over 65mph :()
New rubber and wheels.
Hi-perf Brake pads and ATE Super Blue fluid
H4 headlight conversion
Install E30 M3 springs
Schroth clip in racing harness
and front and rear strut braces
that oughta do it!
franzdom 10-29-2003, 03:33 PM Sweet! I think they weigh a bit more than 2500 lb.
How many miles?
What exhaust please, and your thoughts on it?
Check out my website, LOTS of 318is ideas & info, including a link to the registry.
IslandS62 10-29-2003, 03:58 PM 2500lbs?! Wow that's pretty light, about 700 lbs less than my MCoupe. The car has 70K on the Odometer, but like many E30 it has stopped working, however the wear on the car is consistent with very low mileage and all the services have been done correctly by the looks of things. I got the car for $3000 even, from a dealer!
Not sure of the brand of exhaust. It may be a generic "ricer" exhaust, but its all stainless and has a DTM tip welded on. It looks like the work of Exhaust Systems Hawaii, which is a well known shop here. Its a bit loud, but not as bad as my MCoupe, and I can't say whether or not it adds power.
All in all I am very happy with the car, and what I got it for.
Thanks for the links, they will definitely be useful! I already used BP's site when I did the prepurchase inspection on the car.
thrlls 10-29-2003, 05:52 PM Very nice!
Let's do the DIY!
BMWDan 10-29-2003, 06:17 PM I love my 318is. I just wish I could have a E30 M3 and a M Coupe and a A4......
yeesh! But yes most people say that the suspension is similar to the M3 because it is! Most (I dunno how much) parts were taken straight from the M3 to make the car a quicker responding car. But you knew all that!
And I think it's 2650 lbs. I got a rebuilt engine/new clutch/rebuilt tranny for $3000 too.
The Beastmaster 10-29-2003, 06:26 PM I second the DIY. So it looks like DIY #4 is upcoming!
IslandS62 10-29-2003, 06:41 PM We can have a detailing DIY again if you guys want. Not sure what else to do with this car. I did an oil change last night and I will slowly get all the other fluids as time permits. The headlight upgrade is like 10 minutes, and I don't have the brake parts yet. I think the control arms and springs need to be done by a shop.
RDR-EURO 10-29-2003, 09:44 PM Sweeet car and you also got a real good price for it!
IslandS62 10-29-2003, 11:34 PM Thanks man!
I figured out why the car had high-speed vibration. the front drivers tire had weird flat-spots AND cupping. Never seen that before!!
Switched out with the spare tire and the vibes are GONE... woohoo...scratch control arms and bushings off the to-do list! :D
Nice car!
BME has a S50 you know...
ZZZING 10-30-2003, 12:56 AM Looks like a great pickup Islands52. Congrats. That will be a fun track car

What's the status on this?
IslandS62 10-31-2003, 07:24 PM Maybe next week guys....we just had a DIY day!
cbouchez 11-02-2003, 05:04 PM love the new ride man!! great interior!!
The Beastmaster 11-05-2003, 07:16 AM Hmmm. You got an E30 Hartge M3 for $3k? :alright
IslandS62 11-05-2003, 08:14 PM It's called "badge engineering". :D
So I had a Hartge badge sitting in my garage...I can have a little "rice on the side" can't I? I have a set of Hartges sitting in my spare bedroom :P
Wheels and PZeros are on, and the car has been lowered with M3 springs...will post up some pics soon.
Ned to re-do the clutch and get some Schroth harnesses and the car will be fini.
Gene V 11-06-2003, 01:30 AM wow, you don't waste any time with a project car...
IslandS62 11-06-2003, 02:21 AM Nope. I learned my lesson with my 240Z. I procrastinated with that car so long it stopped running, so I stripped it for re-build and it sat in the garage for 4 years.
Never again.
Gene V 11-06-2003, 02:18 PM Are you going to be satisfied with that four banger power output?
IslandS62 11-06-2003, 03:15 PM For now yes. I am still learning and gaining skills on the track and I think this is the car to do it with. It has the same basic underpinnings that both the M3 and the MCoupe has, is pretty safe, and I can't get into too much trouble. Plus I am much more willing to ball up this car than any of my others (knock wood).
More a training car than a track car perhaps.
Gene V 11-06-2003, 06:36 PM Sounds like a winner, I'd definitely like to have a "track" car...I haven't tracked my M3 as of yet because I can't afford to wad it up and as we all know, "sh*t happens"...

Gene, if you can avoid crashing at autocross, your chances of crashing on the track are severly lessened.;)
I understand the need for concern though.
The E36 seems to have replaced my yellow car as the track car now. Much more speed on the straights, better brakes and with some nice rubber it will be just as fast in the turns (if not faster). :)

I'm confident that I could handle a track event, especially after some expert instruction, but I'm planning my retirement and replacing the M isn't in those plans...now if I win the lottery...:D
The Beastmaster 11-06-2003, 09:37 PM Hmmm, I'm still waiting for my track car to be finished.
thrlls 11-06-2003, 09:54 PM Yes, Yes!
If you win the lottery, we all get a track car!!!
Really, after seeing the S2000 turtle at the A-500, it got me thinking twice about using my car for such events.
The Beastmaster 11-06-2003, 09:59 PM Turtle???
Of course my track car is a proper car with a hardtop. Now, where is that 400 grit so I can make the hood nice and shiny? I do start w/ 400 and work my way up?
IslandS62 11-07-2003, 03:43 AM Nope. 400 will definitely work its way DOWN :D
The Beastmaster 11-07-2003, 04:18 AM You know, I just tried that on McFiver and it really scratched the paint on my rear valence! What was I doing wrong? I used water to wet sand it.
IslandS62 11-07-2003, 02:24 PM Are you kidding or are you serious?! The MOST aggressive grit that should be used on paint is 1500, and then you should know what you're doing...better yet is 2000 grit.
I only used 600 on my rear spoiler because I was going to re-paint.
The Beastmaster 11-07-2003, 08:34 PM Just got back from Central and they want $300 to repaint my rear bumper. :(
IslandS62 11-07-2003, 09:04 PM Doh! You weren't kidding :(
The Beastmaster 11-07-2003, 10:31 PM See what happens when I start to take care of my car. I should have left it alone.
thrlls 11-07-2003, 10:44 PM Start with Sandblasting and work your way up :D
You will now appreciate your car a whole lot more!
Did you get your pc yet?
The Beastmaster 11-07-2003, 10:57 PM PC is on its way from Coastal tools.
You think sandblasting will clean off the paint and I can just repaint it?
The Beastmaster 11-08-2003, 12:36 AM GOTCHA!
I went for a ride on my bike on Tuesday and ran into a car for sale. How's about a 318ti? Forest green w/ Cal ragtop. Can't remember if it was auto or stick. I just need to get rid of the 750.
IslandS62 11-08-2003, 04:09 AM Those ragtops are pretty cool. And you can DASC it.
Long story about this evening, but Reid and I will be running out to Dean's place tommorrow AM. If you guys aren't doing anything...then back to my place to reassmble my front suspension!! Long story...but if you ever wanted to know how to put in coil overs, apparently Reid's DA MAN!!
thrlls 11-08-2003, 01:36 PM What time?
I may take a stroll over there.
Hey John,
After thinking about it more, there is NO adjustment for the front suspension of an E36. Well, I suppose technically you can adjust toe via the tie rods, but we did not touch those.
Therefore, there is no need for an alignment on the coupe. :)
IslandS62 11-09-2003, 02:51 PM Good info. Thanks again Reid. I will use the appointment to align the 318 then.
For those of you who haven't seen (and heard) Reid's E36 M3 yet., you guys are in for a treat. That thing is really, REALLY cool. I want your brakes!!

I've seen the car briefly at an autox a couple of months ago, but not upclose...looking forward to seeing the completed project on r compounds... :)

Hey Gene,
Have you heard anything about a forced induction allowance for cars up to 3.5L in SM?
:)
Gene V 11-10-2003, 08:47 PM I think I've seen reference to FI M3s on bf.c, but I'm not sure...

Reid,
Here's the online rule book: www.moutons.org/sccasolo/
The way I read it, you're limited 3.0L for OHC FI in SM...you're not contemplating something outrageous like a cammed twin-turbo stroker are you?...
BTW, did you do your own OBDII cam kit install?
