ok..little sensitive to this comment here, i agree that its a mistake the driver makes that causes wrecks...BUT guess what, everyone makes mistakes...........even professionals. and at 100+mph it doesn't take something COMPLETELY wrong..its just takes the right amount of wrong.

so i think the way to say it is, sh*t happens...and you have to be ok with that.

i will try and be there

It's fairly easy to get overconfident and go into a corner too hot on the track, especially if you have a high power car like a f/i M3. Once you're off the paved surface, it's fairly easy to end up on your lid. Yeah, technically, it's the driver's "fault" but it's still something that can happen to even a good driver.

While I agree there is risk involved, I take the side of James here... You only really start getting into trouble when youre trying to catch someone or do stupid things...

Just because you go off the track doesnt mean youre going to crash... I went flying off turn 1 @ VIR once because of brake fade and just went straight off, both feet in... on corners and stuff, you really shouldnt be going off unless youre going too fast and the instructor SHOULD be keeping an eye on what you are doing...

but like other have said, mistakes DO happen... hell, someone once told me that NOTHING could ever happen at an autocross... I guess we all know how that turned out :(

If I even "think" that the car behind me is faster, I signal them by me and I slow down on the straights ... I just work on picking a good line right now ... and staying smooth ...

It doesn't matter to me if I am lapped by every single person in my run group ...

So, yes, it is easy to get overconfident -- but, at the same time, I think the driver can stay grounded ... and remember, that although he/she might improve ... that doesn't make them Kimi ..

Honestly, James, I would not waste your breath. YOUR car is one of the cars that I could understand not wanting to take it to the track. It is so much more modified than most cars and there is a lot of money invested in it.

We BOTH have done track and we BOTH know that you go at YOUR OWN pace. I drove my car out there with high mileage and not knowing what it's capabilities are...and I did just fine.

Most people talk about wrecking their car so that they have an excuse not to go. Hey...if you don't want to go....just say so....or don't reply in threads like this. It's your car....do as you will with it....but don't make excuses.

I'll be the first to admit it....I will probably not take my 325ci out on the track..reason being...I don't want to chip it up. I would love to take it out there if there were no cars in front of me. Hell, I did one of Nick's Drives in it. The track is not as bad as the "Drives".

James, you posted this thread to let people know about it. If they want to come....great...if not...no big deal. I wouldn't waste your time justifying why they should go. It's better to have only the guys who WANT to be there show up.

I've cleared the schedule.

I agree with James on his point of view. Some of us have gone on "spirited" drives on the backroads, and I don't necessarily mean driving like a maniac like on some these organized "drives". A track is really no different, if not a safer environment (no oncoming cars, trees do not line up the sides of the roads)-as long as the driver goes into the DE with a mature attitude and not think they are going to become JPM-then it is a good learning experience. I don't think it is for everyone because some people think that they need to tear it up out there because they are on a race track. I remember the first DE I went to with James, he wasn't going 10/10's out there-not even on the straightaway. I passed him a couple times in his green BMW. Believe me, with his F/I motor, he could've easily opened it up and served up a can of whoop ass on the straight. We each did what WE were comfortable with.

At another DE, I had a Lexus IS300 on my tail on the twisties at Summit, but once on the straightaway, I could pull away from him-it takes no skill to floor it on a roll in a straight line, it's just car vs car at that point. After one lap, I sucked up my "pride" and I let him pass me on the straight, since he was obviously the better driver. Some people may just think to try to maintain that lead from the straight and drive outside of their abilities. That's dangerous to everyone.

To address John's point about overconfidence-I think being mature enough to acknowledge your comfort level is important-just wanting to learn and be a better driver isn't enough. Yes, unfortunately, there are accidents that no amount of preparation can prevent-but that's why they are called accidents. But it is a calculated risk-balancing the potential benefit against danger.

I always see these posts by these guys that say "when do I brake in a turn" or "how do I pick the right line" but then admit that they want to know for the street. Typical responses from others are "take it to the track and learn the right way". Honestly, I do not want to be even near these guys on a track, as they lack the maturity to truly want to learn-meaning starting off driving at 4/10s.

John V
10-23-2003, 08:58 AM
Look guys, I've done several DEs in the past, and some open-lapping days as well (way more dangerous). I've gone off the track, too (same place twice actually, turn 2 at Nelson Ledges). Aside from having to pick sod out of corners of the car I didn't even know existed, nothing bad happened. So I'm not saying that someone who goes to the track is guaranteed to wreck or even go off-track, but it does happen. It's a possibility you have to be prepared for more than, say, in autocross. So don't give people crap for using excuses that you have managed to reason out one way or another.

I would love to get back into DEs, but the fact of the matter is they're way too expensive for me at the moment, and they all seem to fall on autocross weekends (like this one), and since I find autocross a little more fun...

no..i think my point was that at track events i would agree wrecks are almost always do to driver error. so we're both there on that point

i think the initial post insinuated that you had to be a complete moron or jackass and f'up completely to wreck your car

i think all you have to do is make a mistake, posts above make reference to "overconfidence" i think alot of accidents happen that way and some happen as a result of very little confidence, what i'm saying is you don't know. there is no formula that says overconfidence + stupid = wreck.

Probably one of the best learning tools for me, moreso than autox and track was the skidpad. May not seem "thrilling", but you really do learn a lot. Plus it makes for great sig pics when you drift yo' whip. Or someone else's...:D

That dude Aryan from Car Guys is AWESOME. Talk about car control. He jumped in various cars (including his Ford F550 dulaie turbodiesel pick up truck and James' Turbo) and drifted them around the skidpad.

Also, instructors don't pressure you. They may encourage you to go faster as you progress, but if you don't feel comfortable, you can always say so. They will respect your wishes.

Jeff -- I think you are way to sensitive to my comments in the initital post .. but, I've retracted everything ... feel better now? Are you sure your baby is not keeping you up making you grumpy in the mornings? :stickoutt ;)

It was not my intention to insinuate that a person that goes off is an f-ing moron driver ... my point was that a person should drive within their own capabilities if they are a FIRST time student. If you read the preceding sentences, that would have placed my comments in context. You took the one sentence and blew it out of proportion. Then again, it's my fault for putting it in there in the first place ...

I'd really encourage you to do Car Guys at Summit Pt this weekend. Of course, this has nothing to do with the fact that I'll be at Saturday's NCC autox and you're currently in 1st place in SSM with Glenn and me couple points behind tied for 2d!

Wait - there's no possible way I'm in first. I've only finished first in one event (coincidentally, Glenn didn't attend that event). They must have made a mistake.

Have they posted the season points yet?

My calculations were based on point totals to-date. Perhaps a bit misleading since championship based on results from best 4 (of 6) events. In any case, because you've run every event -- and not finished lower than 3rd -- your cumulative point total is 44. Glenn and I are both at 38. However, if just count best 4 events, Glenn is at 38, you're at 36 and I'm at 32 :bawl

So, with all this blabbering back and forth about driver error and going to the track, is anyone actually going to SIGN UP and GO this time?!?! I'm tired of running these things for you guys so everyone can talk about it, but no one actually ponies up the cash to drive! :D

Yeah, there are plenty of places to watch from. I went to Summit this past weekend to watch. It was pretty fun.

sunir
11-04-2003, 03:46 PM
can come and watch at Summit...there are places to see al over sections of the track.

also, James, if your car was running well chances are you would be fine on track...you just finished the FoW event without problems or symptoms (such as oil globules in the coolant). Your engine's compression was good and this is the last event of the year for most folks...would have been a good way to close out '03 for ya...you could have gotten your car fixed in the winter when they'd have more time to do the work, it is the track time you'll miss the most during the winter so it is good to get as much as you can right now...the way I see it is that you'll pay the same when your head gasket goes (they'll check and freshen the head regardless at that point) as you will just on freshening the head without anything majorly wrong...I think preventative maintanance is good, just so much may not be needed and will definately cost lots of $$$ some of which may not even be really needed, just remember the faster you get the more things break, and the less you're likely to be out there in a 'perfectly running fully tuned to the hilt' car...just got out there and drive and have fun!

hope this helps:)

Lol Sunir ... and so sayeth the man that has blown two headgaskets this year ... I am not a playa' or balla' like you guys ... so, I make calculated moves.

True, I could have waited -- but, gee sunir, let's see... wait, let my engine overheat, and HOPE that I ONLY warp the block and not scorch my pistons/cylinder walls, etc ... etc. Gee, how much is a new block these days, ahh yes, $2200 ... what am I thinking, that's SO MUCH cheaper than what I am paying now for the headgasket job ... why didn't I think of it??? :stickoutt .. I mean hello ... they can't freshen a cracked or badly warped head you know.

You are not even close on this one Sunir ... it was a MUCH smarter decision for me to fix it right now than to wait. Besides, there is still hope that I can make ... the head was pulled off today and I got to look at it. Pat was pretty happy and said that good thing you did it now since there was no damage ...

Plus, I'll know more by this weekend if it can be fixed by next week -- so far, it looks pretty good that I can run with Car Guys ... we'll see ... we'll see.

You know what though, who cares about the track ... it's all about takin' it to da streetzzzz ... I thank team.BAR for teaching me that philosophy ... I always thought it belonged on the track; but, oh how wrong i was.

AHAHAHA. Neil...you are getting better at it. However, when you refer to more than one person it is madatory to use at least 4 Z's. Also, if you were only referring to one person...you are at liberty to use either 3 or 4 Z's. Generally, you use 3 Z's...but if you want to stress that word....you should use 4 Z's. Make sense???:dunno

So Andy are you going for sure? I may come up to peep them bitchin' ridezzz since it's only about 40 minutes away from me. I definitely cant drive on the track though since I just put on some sweet 16" snow rimzzz. It's great, it looks like I have a BBK now. Dont know why people spend all that money on huge discs. :dunno

It's a good thing I didnt try to run during the FoW event, when I took off my 17's I noticed that my camber (and maybe alignment) issue in the rear had worn the inside of my tires to the cords.

On second thought maybe Ill run my car just to watch the chunks of tread fly off and hear those 50-series tires howl. :D

There is an Audi school at VIR on the FULL COURSE on December 5 - 6. Last I checked there were still openings.
I may head down there for my last fix before the winter.

Yeah, Mike...I already sent in my payment. I will be going only on Sat. I might be able to take you for a ride one session too.
