View Full Version : Victo Tire pressures?
John V 10-22-2003, 01:12 PM Pre-Konis, I was running 34psi front (hot) and 28psi rear and the car still didn't rotate for shit. After the SCCA event this weekend it became apparent I was running either too much stagger in the pressures or too much rear rebound - the rear end was skating around entering bumpy corners and it had zods of power-on oversteer (even with my lower levels of torque compared to most of you).
I didn't feel like playing with the car on Sunday so I just drove it as it was. After the event I did crank the rear shocks one half turn towards the soft side and bumped the tire pressure in the rear two psi.
So now I'm at 34f/30r, 1.5 turns from full stiff up front and rear (about halfway). What pressures are you guys running f/r and what's your reasoning behind it?
I'd try and run a couple of PSIs higher than what you currently use, John...around 38-40 front, 33-35 rear.
I currently run 36F/32R, yet I still manage to get the sides scuffed...more than I'd like. Considering that I already run aftermarket sways and slightly stiffer springs than yours, the extra PSIs will not only prevent the sides from rolling over, I think you'd actually get better grip.
On a related note, I ran totally different pressures in my GTI at the last MARRS race, per a fellow-VW racer's suggestion. With 5 PSIs more all around than what I normally run, the grip was AMAZING...almost like getting fresh tires. Granted, these were Hoosiers, but the rules can't be that different between tire brands.
Try it...it's a free mod!
John V 10-22-2003, 01:52 PM I'll give it a go. The interesting thing is that I have never run onto the sidewalls in the Victos. In fact, I can still see the remnants of the outer tread blocks on the corner of the sidewall! I just noticed you all ran higher pressures than me, so I wondered if there was something to it.
Maybe I'm not driving hard enough.
I will try it though, thanks!

FWIW, I only seem to scuff the edges badly when I run at Rosecroft. The tighter, slower corners there probably wear out the tires more than the relatively wider, faster turns at FedEx.
magnetic1 10-23-2003, 08:38 AM I never run R-compounds at Rosecroft... only street tires...
Rosecroft eats up so much tire and its not really too big of an event anyways.... for me this season it was Hoosier at FedEx and Toyo T1S at Rosecroft...
Next year: Hoosier @ FedEx, Kumho V700 @ Rosecroft.
John V 10-23-2003, 08:44 AM Yeah, I did one event at Rosechunk. I don't think I'll ever go again. It's just not worth the rock chips.
I'll try higher pressures at Booie and see how it works.

///Mracer 10-23-2003, 04:31 PM John - what size Victos do you run?
I run 255's and typically have them set at 39 front / 32 rear.
I tend to leave the fronts alone and adjust the rears anywhere from 34 - 30 psi depending on how tight the course is and how much I need the car to rotate.
John V 10-24-2003, 07:33 AM Matt -
245/45/17. :( They don't sell a 245/40 size (yet... :) ) in the Victoracer.
I'm going to try higher pressures at the BMW event this weekend and see how it works out.

Thanks for the suggestions, Glenn and Matt. I ran 38 front and 33 rear to start. They crept up to 42 hot and 35 rear and I bled them back down.
Turn in was MUCH sharper. The rear end was dancing out quite a bit trail braking into corners. I ended up adding a couple PSI to the rears, finishing at 38 front and 35 rear (hot). The car was very balanced like this, and I could put the power down better.
Now I need to learn how to drive it all over again (oh, and get a front sway. Haha).
Thanks again,
John V
///Mracer 10-27-2003, 09:58 AM John - I am glad it worked out for you. THis weekend I ran at the PA State Championship and decided to add 2 more psi to the rear than I usually run. I stayed with 38 front, 34 rear and this worked very well for me. We ran at the Hershey lot which is about the same size, if not bigger, than FedEx field. This course was designed by Lee Piccone and was very VERY fast  . I needed the extra psi in the rear to keep it from dancing too much.
It was a good day, I won SM and beat out Doug Newhart driving Lee's car by a small margin, it was a tough fight but a good one. Lee ran BSP and still got me by a half second, I think it is time for a new rear diff., or Hoosiers, or coilovers, or throttle body/injectures, or lighter seats, or........ the list keeps growing :(
John V 10-27-2003, 10:02 AM Haha. The advantage of running B Stock. Not too many things you can do. All I need is an exhaust, and a front bar, and a better alignment, oh, and a LOT MORE SEAT TIME. Heh.
John V
Half-a-second behind Lee is awesome! The fact that you beat the car with Doug driving it says a lot.
///Mracer 10-27-2003, 10:18 AM Thanks Glenn, Lee is trying to get me to buy his 18" SSR. He said the grisper turn in will definitly help out, but then I would have to run Hoosiers. My Victo's did great this year, they put up with 25+ auto-xes and a track day so far. There is sooo much rubber left that I am going to run them at Summit on Nov. 7 FATT. If I ran Hoosiers I would have to buy like 3-4 sets a year instead of 1 set of good ol' Victos!!!!!
BTW - Ellie (my fiance) ran my car in SM in the guys class and ended up in 3rd place behind Doug and a trophie :buttrock . She did great considering she has not driven the car for over 2 months and her main job was to be my tire warmer :awink: .
It just sucks that the year is winding down, I might do one more event if AI runs one at Ripken stadium, after that, I guess it is hibernation until march :(
