DuPont has a sweet chrome illusion color, sprayed it once when i painted for a while. Expensive as shit and hard as hell to get it to look right on the car. When I was painting it was about $500-$750 per gallon. But def. good looking if the right guy does the job.

They never offered this color for the reasons already expressed. Very expensive and extremely difficult to get it right. Imagine if you have to repair a body panel? You would have to paint the whole damn car to get it right. But man o man, what a beautiful color.

It's called Chrome Shadow. It was a $20k paint job for the BMW concept cars (both regular M3 and CSL for a while). It was not an offered color. Somebody managed to track the paint code down to one specific company. But like stated above... to paint the car was $20k and repairing a body panels would be a nightmare.

I can only imagine your local (or not-so-local) body shop attempting to match the color.

With the sunlight issues, it would seem that you could only drive it at night. Imagine the sunshine shining off of the hood onto your face.

I believe another issue with the paint was the lead content. Not sure if it was a rumor or not, but I've been told that it has such a high content that it will be very dangerous to work with at most paint shops. Also, this makes importing it to the US somewhat difficult.

Alright alright, i meant to say chrome shadow...my bad. lol yeah kevlar, i used to have a pearl white a4 and i shredded a fender, they had to repaint half the car to match it. I can't even imagine how on earth you could possibly match that color.

Where would one go about finding the DuPont paint in a similar color? I assume it would not be that difficult to paint some small plastic items, such as headlight surrounds, in that color.

I bought an HVLP spray gun the other day and am going to give it a shot.

Covering the whole car with Reynold wrapping paper could be a quick solution :-)

I saw that Chrome Shadow M3 in person a few years back. It was absolutely beautiful!!!

Like others have said, that paint job costs a fortune relatively. Also, I heard that it is not very durable, and more susceptible to rock chips, etc.

I think that BMW is trying to come out with similar colors, because everyone loves that chrome shadow.
