Has BMW NA found a way to resolve the problem of the 800mA current drain in some modes that kills the battery in a matter of days? I saw the service bulletin, but there is no claimed fix. Anyone know of a work around/permanent fix?
Thanks!

After turning the ignition off, turn it to the #2 position and then back off again. As far as I know the problem is caused when climate control settings are changed during the las t driving cycle.

what do you mean by the last driving cycle?
I have a 12/02 build and have had my battery mysterously go dead a couple of times. i thought that it was because i didn't lock my doors and the dome light stayed on or something. where would i find a copy of this service bullitin? and what is the device called that is used to measure power draw?

I mean if you changed the climate control settings while you were driving your car. I think it was for 2/03 build dates and later. I can't find where I posted it last. FYI, the interior lights go out after a while if you leave your door open.

Is the climate control "problem" actually intended to be a feature? I know on the MB S500 you can press a few buttons on the climate control and it will keep the interior climate controlled for a period of time with the car unattended. I believe this would be used if you live in a very hot climate and you are only going to ba away from your car for a short time, otherwise your battery would die. maybe this is BMW's foray into this feature and it is not perfected quite yet. Just a thought.

According to my dealer, the service dept can now do a re-program. I still see new posts with folks having dead batteries, so I wonder. No direct experience with the fix as my M3 will not come in until January.

They seem to have a fix as SWM3 described. Make an appointment and take down the service bulletin number. Some dealerships are clueless. Until you get it fixed just do the steps I described.
1. Turn the car off.
2. Turn ignition switch back to position 2 without turning the engine on.
3. Turn it back to off and remove the key.
It's very simple. Off-on-off.
