View Full Version : SuperSprint Exhaust / Pipe Components
MattMan 10-09-2003, 01:51 PM Here's a pic of the components..
Can someone explain what is the..
1. Best performance? (how much)
2. Best without any CELs or warning lights?
3. Best LEGAL?
Thanks,
Mik3 Agby 10-09-2003, 05:10 PM well i was told the best setup is the headers, cats, xpipe and the exhaust....and i think it can gain up to 33hp..
Topaz M3 Chibi 10-09-2003, 08:31 PM how much of it can u do and still be emissions legal?
just muffler and x pipe?
beowoulf 10-11-2003, 05:18 AM 1. Headers, race cats, s-pipe, x-pipe w/o resonator, muffler.
2. If the installation is done properly then you shouldn't have any CELs.
3. s-pipe, x-pipe, muffler.
You may get away with the setup in #1 if you live in a smog lenient state or know the smog guy personally.:12:

Hey Beo can you give some more details on this?:buttrock
JMWeb 10-12-2003, 09:27 PM You shouldnt get any CELs if you purchase the cats.
So, i suggest headers, cats, x-pipe and muffler..
You should be able to feel the power gains..
---
However, the non-cat setup is so much more powerful. Its a night and day difference, but is not emmision legal.
MattMan 10-12-2003, 10:18 PM So:
Headers: 043901
Metallic Cat Sys: 787502
X-PIPE: 787513
I have an Eisenmann exhaust.
So will that work OK?
Expected performance gain?
Sound change?
Why not use 787503 (looks like there's a resonator there)?
MattMan 10-12-2003, 10:50 PM Another question.. what's the difference between S-PIPE (787512) and X-PIPE (787513)?
Do they connect or are they replacements of each other?
1.
I'm thinking that a NO CAT solution would be:
HEADERS (043901) +
S-PIPE (787512) +
X-PIPE (787513) +
EXHAUST.
Correct?
2.
Headers but with CATs:
HEADERS (043901) +
Metallic Cats (787502) +
X-PIPE (787513)
Exhaust
Correct?
I am thinking that the S-PIPE is a direct replacement of the SS Cats (787502).
3.
Now you CAN go with the Header/Cat combo piece (044021) + the S-PIPE (787512) and maintain CATs.
So another question is what's the diff w/ the above one (3) and the option 2? The (044021) looks the same as the U.S. OE Headers so the S-PIPE only replaces resonators as with the X-PIPE.
OK.. so everyone is confused.. anyone confirm/clarify? Anyone have these setups that can speak of it and/or performance benefits?
beowoulf 10-13-2003, 05:47 PM You guys don't realize that you are looking at the diagram for european models. In US, the cats are on the exhaust headers.
The S-Pipe is after the cats in the US and replaces the cats in europe. If yo want to stay smog legal then all you can do is the S-Pipe, X-Pipe and muffler.
If you don't live in cali and you know a guy that does smog;) , then you can probably get away with new headers and race cats.
The resonator is there to reduce the noise. It causes turbulance and slows down the air flow therefore reducing power over a non-resonator X-pipe.
Edit: Just give Joel at Bavarian Hyper Sports a call. He is very knowledgeable and has the best prices on this stuff. 281-682-1177, tell him Alex sent you.
Mik3 Agby 10-13-2003, 06:13 PM is the S-Pipe the racing pipe or are they different?
Topaz M3 Chibi 10-13-2003, 08:44 PM do the amount of emissions change with x pipe with / without resonator or is it purely sound level difference?
OTTOFLM3 10-13-2003, 10:48 PM looks well designed, whats it sound like? any vid clips?

SAME
beowoulf 10-14-2003, 01:16 AM I don't know what you guys mean by racing pipe. Since it removes the cats in the euro models then I guess it can be considered a racing pipe.
Here is a quick lesson in exhaust. It is not complete or comprehensive but here it goes.
What you try to achieve with after market exhaust is better flow. If you increase the rate of flow then you get more power. Take a look at your stock exhaust. It has resonator, the diameter may be a touch smaller and the bends are not as smooth. What these pipes try to do is get rid of the tight spots and produce a clean flow. Anything after the cats is considered catback and is emission legal. Since the US cats are fixed to the headers you run into possible emission problems if you change them. In extreme cases they can fine you big time for altering the emissions and even impound the car, especially if you live in cali. If you want to change them then go with the headers and race cats. Forget about the euro cats and headers. They will only give you about 3-4 hp for $$$$.
You will get better performance with a complete catback exhaust (X&S pipes +muffler). How much? maybe about 10-12 hp. If that is worth $2000+++ to you, then go for it. I know I did.:mdrbig
Yup Yup! 10-24-2003, 04:36 AM So, you're saying I can get part #'s 787512 & 787513 & still pass emissions? :help With these 2 items (Combined w/an aftermarket exhaust), besides getting better airflow then the oem pipes, it'll be louder as well right? If so, how much louder???...Dramatically, barely, etc...Thanks!
BTW, the search engine kicks a$$! :buttrock
Why not just get Euro headers/cats and save lots of $$$.
You'll need to extend the O2 sensor wires a bit, but should have no CEL and be smog legal... unless they look under the car and know what to look for.
beowoulf 10-26-2003, 01:29 AM OK guys. One last time. Any component changed after the catalytic converters does not change emissions. The diagram and notations at the top are for euro models. Remember, SS is made in Italy.
The S- Pipe (787512) does not replace the cats in US cars, only in euro models. The X-pipe (787513 or 787503) goes in between the S-pipe and the muffler. These are designed to have better airflow, thus increasing power.
Euro headers and cats are not an option in California due to emissions but may pass in other states. They only increase power by about 5 hp (remember the euro hp is in DIN). If the cost and the emissions are worth it, then do it. The SS headers and race cats will give more power than the euro ones.
BTW: Both the X and S pipes are on back order for a month or so.
Yup Yup! 10-26-2003, 04:33 AM Originally posted by beowoulf

Actually, it's on national back order until January. I've confirmed this w/both BavHyperSports & the official Supersprint NA distributor (BMP).
BTW, thanks for the confirmation. I guess I'll have to wait til Jan. to get those 2 items.
Topaz M3 Chibi 10-26-2003, 01:21 PM beo what muffler do you have?

Are you sure the Euro cat's won't pass emission in Cali??? I know it won't pass if someone looks at the headers and nows how they're suppose to look, but I doubt anyone would actually do it. Just get thos cats nice and hot and I've been told they pass; again I wasn't there to see it with my own eyes.
Where can I get the SS pipes?

Do you want to spent $3000 for 4-5 hp? If so let us know if it passes emission. The emissions on this car were specifically set up for california. You forget you live in emission nazi capital of the world. You can get that much hp from the GC gizmo for $78.

You are forgetting critical statistics that are important. While the Euro headers and Cats may only produce 7-9 WHP they are Dyno proven from Will Turner to make 17 lbs/ ft low end torque which the M3 needs very much. This is legitimate power from OEM BMW parts not Estimated power like all these companies claim to get from ther CF Airboxes, etc. If you are going to spend this much money modding this car, you better make sure that you are buying Dyno proven products from reliable sources.
