Fall Break starts next weekend. Girlfriend is driving here from her school in Birmingham (I'm in Rome, GA). We're going to Hilton Head Island (her parents got a condo deal for four days, but will only be there for two :D:D). Planning on obviously, taking 75 down to Atlanta. Do we need to take 285 to go around ATL or just straight through on I-75? Unfortunately I think we're going to be in the ATL area sometime between 4-6pm, prime traffic times. Just wanted to see which would be quicker.

After that we'll continue down on 75 to Macon, get on I-16 (I think?) straight towards Savannah, up on 95 for a small bit of time then off to Hilton Head.

So, 75 straight through ATL or 75->285->75? I'm guessing just stay on 75 but I could be wrong :D

Thanks 'Dawgs' (:laugh)

Since you'll be going against traffic until the connector (85/75 merge) you should be ok just using 75. Then you can use the HOV lane to get down past the south side of 285. You'll probably crawl from there for a while, but I don't see going around 285 (past 20 and 85) being any quicker. Once you get about 10-15 mi outside of the city it should be clear sailing. And make sure you've got gas before 16 past Macon.....cause there ain't really $hit out there till you hit 95 in Savannah.

Don't speed on I-16. Looks dead and empty but they speed trap it.

Cruise control to 80mph in the 70mph zone and just chill. Maybe even let the gf drive, I think having my gf drive once got us out of a ticket, ie if I was driving, prolly a ticket.

So stick to 75, when do I need to get in the HOV lane? What exactly are the rules of the HOV lane, I remember the first (and last time so far) I used it, I was really hella confused. IIRC, it is just for car pooling, and that's what we're doing, sorta...

And once I get on 16, keep it below 75mph, make sure we've got gas leaving Macon.

Thanks for the advice fellas.

Get in the HOV lane once u see the lanes open up for it. Its only available like 10 miles before and after leaving atlanta on 75/85s. Only rules is two people or more required to ride in the HOV lane or a motorcycle. The HOV lane has double lines and diamonds posted on the ground within the lanes. And in all reality you wont really save much time in the HOV lanes when your stuck behind slow ass people. I like to ride in the middle and speed so cops cant gun u. You will see DMV cops hiding on the shoulder of the HOV lane looking for peopl riding alone. I always wonder if they gun for speeders too?? Thats one reason why I never ride in the HOV lane even with 2 people.

TheBestCow,
Looks like you should have smooth sailing through downtown....

Georgia Tech is playing AT Wake Forest
UGA is playing AT Tennessee

Going South, the HOV lane starts as you go under I-285.
It probably ends somewhere around by the south end of I-285.

Dean,

I used to work downtown, so when I was going home in the afternoon (North), there would be a motorcycle cop sometime before the Moore's Mill exit sitting next to the wall on the HOV lane side "taking your picture".

Sounds good, 2Slow.

Reading your signature, I think I might have the front trim piece used to hold the license plate in place at home. I'll could have my parents ship it to you if you still need it (given that I still have it).
