View Full Version : Driveline Clunk in '00 M Coupe

Ok here's the situation. I just replaced my stock 3.23 diff with a 3.73 diff. Major hassle..first 3.73 went in and then I heard the driveline clunk. I put the 3.23 back in and the clunk was still there, so just for "piece of mind" I exchanged the first 3.73 diff for another 3.73. Well the noise remains and I guess it's just coincidental that it showed up after the diff install. I really never noticed it before. Here's what is happening in a nutshell.....

engage clutch, roll slightly forward, disengage clutch = rattle for 1 to 2 secs (seems to come from front portion of car, but hard to tell)

Basically I can only hear at low speeds...seems more annoying than anything else...otherwise the car drives perfect when under power or releasing the clutch in a normal, controlled, smooth fashion. Intensifys as you are more abrupt with clutch engagement and disengagement

As an FYI - Guibo was replaced under warranty about 3 months ago (i checked again and it is perfect), Car has UUC Tranny Mount Enforcers and approx 30K miles

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
MSH

Tranny mounts?

Yep...I'm going to give that a shot this weekend (tranny mounts). Maybe loosen..drop..drive to settle trans (i think some have recommended this)...then snug em down.

Some have suggestions it may be the dual mass fly & I have received the center bearing call too...still a mystery unfortunately..

Thanks,
MSH

I have an E36 M3 with the red tranny mounts and the exact same thing happens to me. It must be the tranny mounts.

My ti has the red tranny mounts and enforcers, and pretty much does this same thing. I have torqued and retorqued so many damn times I can't even keep track.
Estoril ART, do you have the enforcers too?

I was thinking about running the mounts without the enforcers to see if it mellows things out.

Also, regarding the whole "loosen, drive to settle, retorque" idea- doesn't jacking the car up to resnug the nuts just move the tranny to wherever it wants anyway? I can't imagine you guys can get under there to tighten things up without lifting the car...

I know...That's what I was kind of thinking, but I'd figure I'd give it a shot...my car is way low with the coilovers . I had to build some small ramps just to get it high enough to get a floor jack under it.

Anyway, thanks for all the input everyone!!

I hear ya! I'm only on H&R sports and it's a PITA to cram my jack under there.

FWIW, I retorqued my mounts once again this morning and have *possibly* gotten rid of all the vibration. I can still hear a little bit, but everything is definitely a ton smoother.

I pulled halfway into the dip between the road and my driveway to gain some access to the mounts, loosened the top nuts, went for a spin, and tightened it back down. Seemed to do the trick for now...

Good luck!

Yeah, I have the enforcers as well.
So all you're supposed to do is loosen only the top of the tranny mounts a little and then take it for a spin, then just torque everything back down again?

I don't know if that's what your "supposed" to do, but it's what I did and seemed to work pretty well. I've also heard of people loosening the bolts that mount the brace to the body and taking it for a spin.
I just thought I would loosen the top ones because they are the actual point that the tranny mounts to.

Couldn't even come close to getting my torque wrench on the top ones either. Unless you have a nice little shorty torque wrench, I just don't think it's happening. What I did was take my regular box-end wrench and stick it on the drive part of the torque wrench to get a feel for what kind of effort results in 16ft-lbs.
