View Full Version : Self tinting glass?

Questions about tinting?

My grandmother had a Cadillac a long time ago that had self tinting glass (like transitions eyeglass lenses) and she had the windows tinted but it caused lots of problems. I also had a jaguar that had self tinting glass so I never bothered having the windows tinted in fear of issues.

Just got my first BMW in July...

Do our cars do this?... from what I have researched they don't. Has anyone had problems with their tints? Is it ok to take to my normal tint guy?

my bmw definitely doesn't have self tinting windows. and i took mine to be tinted by a "normal tint guy," and he did a great job. i took it down to 30% all the way around, and i haven't had any problems with it.

No, your car does not do that.

None had it. Closest is the self dimmer mirrors, and rear sun shades.

E.X.P.L.O.D.E.................and it gets all over, and permanently ruins your interior....

They don't explode per se, but they can leak and cause permanent, irrepairable damage to your interior.

I've never seen the self tinting windows, that would be great!

They were definitely a nice feature on the Jag (although I will never ever own a British car again... the Jag and the Land Rover were the biggest mistakes ever)

They didn't offer any security though (like leaving valuables in the car and not having anyone see in) nor did they offer any heat absorption from sunlight b/c they never got dark enough. They darkened just enough that it was noticeable to the naked eye and muted the sun slightly... Cool none the less.

Is that the same shit as the Benz' with the blue windows?

I'm not sure if they each have their own patented self tinting glass or if they all share the same technology. My Jaguar would get blue-ish/grey exactly like the Mercedes... while my grandmother's Cadillac would get very gold/amber colored (the Caddy was also a late nineties model.) Of course this was before the tinting disaster.

I think the older 750i's had something along this line also.

No auto tinting windows like they've said. As far as tinting issues, tinting the rear window can lead to declined radio reception, and make sure they work the area with all the black dots...most likely it won't be perfect. Other than that, tint away!

Ninety's Ford & Linclons had special windshield option with a copper hue that was heated glass.

Tint with a non metallic tint like 3M that are proven not to interfere with your radio reception. They're a little more expensive but worth it.

Yeah, I was afraid that is what you meant. What are the chances of this happening? Are there any signs to look out for or does it occur randomly without notice?

I have heard this happening a few times. I don't know if you could consider it a "class probem", but I do know of at least one guy that took his out pre-emptively, and replaced it with a non-diming mirror.....before catastrophy happened.

This is my first vehicle with auto dimming mirrors so I am going to take my chances...

They don't E.X.P.L.O.D.E per se, they can leak the fluid out which again, can cause irrepairable damage to the interior of your car. What causes the mirrors to begin leaking? You got me, but I have one in my car too and no problems, I love the self dimming mirrors.
