Saturday night I am out trolling for something to run with, and for over an hour I had been unsuccesful. So I decide to call it quits and head home. As I get into the left most lane to turn right onto my street I look up to see a large muscle car with what appears to be a dual exhaust system that ends about half way back under the car. As I get closer I turn off my blinker and prepare for the inevitable.
The road we are on is 4 lanes in each direction and it is dead as dead get so as soon as I am stopped at the light I start bringing up my RPM's. The bright orange car next to me (I think it was a Chevelle) does the same. Now that we were both stagged all we could do was wait. Sitting at 3500 RPM I could not even hear my car, because of the overpowering sound of that V8.
GREEN!!! and he got me about a half a car out of the hole, but as soon as I got traction I was right on him. Through second I was slowly regaining ground, sitting with my bumper right next to his door. As I bang into third I can see my car starting to pull even with him. Then into fourth we were dead even, but that's when I shut down. I think we were doing about 100mph when we let off.
So now that I was deaf from having that monster of a car rapping out next to me!!! I could barely hear the guy trying to talk to me through our windows so I signaled for him to pull over. Turns out the car was a Chevelle with SS badges, he had put that 454 in the car about a month earlier and had put more aggresive cam, intake, carberatur, heads and on his list went (sorry I don't know much about muscle cars). He told me he was about 400 Hp at the wheels, and was running 4:10 gears. Nice guy good run, but damn those things are loud!!!

He should have slaughtered you. He's probably got the carbs all out of wack.

Congrats. :)

This is the kind of kill story I like to hear.

You mentioned that you were starting to pull on him in 4th (well, 2nd, 3rd too), but it was in his best interest to shut down at 100. A car like that with a low redline and a 4.10 rear gear with what was probably a 4spd tranny, isn't good for anything over 100mph.

If you would have gotten really serious in 4th you would have passed him and been banging on 7000 in 4th doing 130 while he is buslengths back running out of gear.

I can't wait to race some old "muscle" cars. :buttrock:

I have the JC cam kit: which includes Intake, Software, S50 Manifold, Euro HFM, Schrick Cams, and 24lbs injectors. I also have Evosport pulleys, bored out TB, SS exhaust, fan delete, traction control delete, Fidanza ltw Flywheel, Rogue Carbon/Kevlar clutch. Bilstein Struts, H&R sport springs, Zimmerman X-drilled Rotors and some more cosmetic stuff.

Well done! Those things are monsters...if he was running some taller gears you might have a different story to tell.

Gotta respect the old muscle...my father has an old '65 Corvette convertible. There's not one of those cars that I see rolling down the road and I'm in awe. There are plenty of cars that can kick its butt now, but the car is just amazing to see in action.

I knew a guy with an original '67 stingray 427/450 (not too many of these critters left the chevy factory)

When he cranked it in the basement, it shook his 3 story house.

Muscle cars are mean - most can't handle well though.

Nice Kill-

Cornering is not exactly those cars forte. The suspension might as well be disconnected from the body.

A lot of them have drums in the back, and in the front too.

yeah, my TA is a WS6..factory rear discs :evil2

I disconnet the sway bars for drag racing, but it came with them too, it handles really well for what it is, but it "aint no bimmer"

you've got an awesome M3 man, that should make what; close to 300hp at the crank?

my question is tho; how does a big block with "400hp" and 4.10 gears, not murder you off the line?

he presumably has fat tires on the back; and all around more drag-oriented setup.

im just wondering, but it just seems inprobable. of course at 100, you started to gain on him, since he has a 4spd probably; but you see why im wondering?

beautiful car though man; damn!

It's called inertia. The car weighs alot more, so it's harder to move off the line.:)

After we pulled over the guy told me that his tires where pretty burned up and that he usually jumps people harder then that off the line. I consider myself to be a decent driver though and the 255's that I run on the back help me to get of the line pretty quick. And yes I do see why you were wondering.:D

Now imagine what would have happened if one of his spark plug leads wasn't off during your run.
