View Full Version : 97 Z3 2.8 vs. 97 Z3 2.8
Well, well...
I was enjoying a ride today, when I passed a 97 2.8 on the highway.
Minutes later, he catches me on the streets next to my place.
I accelerate from a stop sign, only to see he his moving fast on me. I floor it, expecting to lose the guy. I somehow stop his momentum a bit, especially when I misshifted to 5th instead of 3rd... The guy didn't ram my ass, thank god, and at the next stop, he goes «do you have a 2.8?», I'm like «yeah, yours is a 97 right?» He goes, «yeah... this is nice!»
I rev a couple of times, and we go at it again. I didn't ask if the guy had mods, but his exhaust looked stock. Maybe an intake from the growl at WOT, I don't know. However, I have the basic trio (Shark, intake, exhaust), so I expected somewhat of an easy kill, despite the fact that I have some added weight because of the front and rear strut braces and roll hoops.
So we start, I get some wheelspin, the car even gets sideways, so when they grip, he's about to edge me out. I shift to second, I think his shift was quicker than mine, and I heard him chirp his tires. The guy is dead even with me. :az:
This is where it starts to suck even more: all the way through second, maybe because of his better momentum due to a better launch, I dunno, he inches ever so slightly, getting maybe 12 inches on me.
And then... :devillook
As he has to shift because his rev limiter is lower than mine, I hear this grinding noise. Ouch! I hoped he hadn't shove it in first! I think he kind of misshifted the 3rd, ending halfway between 3rd and 5th. Which is a good thing because when I shifted, I put it in 5th again... something I sometimes do when trying to accelerate hard.
So I finished in front, but I'm a bit disappointed by my mods and by myself. The guy was a better driver, and I guess my mods give some more hp in the mid range, like when you run leisurely at 3500 rpm, but do not allow a full rape on 0-80 races...
:(
Gary-TulZa 09-26-2003, 04:22 PM You need to learn to shift better dude!!!
j/k - nice kill, I think! ;)
I need to learn to shift better, you bet. This sucks.
StouffvilleZ3 09-26-2003, 04:28 PM Nah, you'd win easily if you didn't screw it up so much. The fact that you came out in front at all is amazing. Blew the launch, then severely shortshirted into 5th. You're lucky he wasn't a ways ahead, stock or not. Don't feel bad, you just got tense thats all.
2-5 shift..aww crap!
Nah, you'd win easily if you didn't screw it up so much.
That helped a lot Bill... :(
:D
The fact that you came out in front at all is amazing. Blew the launch, then severely shortshirted into 5th.
What pisses me off is that he was gaining DURING the second gear. When I misshifted, he was already dead from HIS misshift! But my launched sucked. I mean, even when I get a little wheelspin, it feels like wheelhop. I got sideways!
ShortshiRted, huh? :12:
You're lucky he wasn't a ways ahead, stock or not. Don't feel bad, you just got tense thats all.
I got tense all right... Misshifts suck. At least, a 2-5 misshift is better than 2-1 one...
Speedfreak 09-26-2003, 04:56 PM I practice shifting every day now. After a couple of 5 to 2s it scares you.
I hear ya. So does 4 to 3...
Gary-TulZa 09-26-2003, 05:05 PM I need to let you drive the Alpine Hugo.
Non-sync 1st gear, you have to be STOPPED to shift into 1st.
I can't remember the last time I came to a full stop in the Bimmers...
dan330 09-26-2003, 06:19 PM Hugo,
I saw a link once to a hand-position technique that would really help you in your shifting.
There is a hand-position for gear. It makes the shift easy and helps to guide the movement into the proper gear everytime. You will have to practice to make it a reflex. The positions are very natural and you should pick it up easily.
The problem is that every gear has a unique position. We all like to put our hand on top of the stick and that is the worst place for fast shifting.
Does anyone have the link to that site?
Speedfreak 09-26-2003, 08:47 PM Short shifter techniques (http://www.shortshifter.com/techniques2.htm)
Works well on stock shifter too!
Thanks man. I'll also buy a big gun, so if I lose again, I can either shoot the other driver (if he laughs) or myself (if he doesn't).
I checked your link. After my so-so race earlier, I went out to drive again... On my car, if I apply this technique («Going into 3rd from 2nd, backhand the shifter knob and push away from you...»), I get into 5th. For me, a straight push gets it into 3rd, from 2nd. I just have this tendency to exagerate the movement, because somehow I fear shoving it into 1st. So it goes in 5th.
M3_MadBimmer 09-26-2003, 11:04 PM yeah i myself started driving my car, everytime i go from 1st to 2nd i sometimes shift in between 2nd and thinrd and sometimes straight to third...i am still getting used to it though
mmmm i just got my license and got a 94 325is, i liek the power for a teenager, but looking forward for a 95 m3 in around a year, and than maybe put a turbo on it soemtime
thanks and good luck shifting
Luke
slickav 09-27-2003, 01:41 AM Teach Dave...........teach ;)........................ Me also :biglaughb
MGregski 09-27-2003, 07:28 AM HUGO RACED!!!!
Hugo, maybe you should consider a short shifter kit?.......or an auto???:D J/K
Nice run man!:buttrock At least you don't have cars blowing up next to you:)
SilverStreak 09-29-2003, 10:57 AM The key to winning a closely matched drag race, like a kick-boxing match, or a gun-fight in the Old West, is to remain calm the whole time.
Sounds cliche and rather general, but it's true. If your heart rate rises and you get all excited and jittery, not the best state of mind to work a clutch, shifter, and be alert to shifting at the right time, etc....
That's why practice makes perfect. Something has to become reflexive eventually for it all to come together.
Like when I was 12, I had trouble playing guitar and singing at the same time. I'd forget the words, or sing flat cuz I was singing too quiet or concentrating on the chord changes.
So I basically practiced the guitar part so much that it became reflexive to the point where I didn't even have to think about it, so I could concentrate more focus on the singing.
With Drag Racing, and this may work for me and not others, (plus keep in mind I've been doing it for a long time), the shifting has become reflexive for me, so I can concentrate on the launch rpms, clutch modulation, etc.
But that came with tons of practice. When you first get going with drag racing, if you try to focus on everything at once, something inevitably gives and spoils the run.
Like with Kick-Boxing, when I first started the arms/punches and kicks were there, but the foot work was not. So I'd get off some great punches and kicks, but my opponent would move, pivot, and I'd miss and sometimes even get caught by a counter-move.
I had to develop my foot work to the point where I don't even think about anymore to be effective.
And as with all examples above, music, kick-boxing, drag racing, etc... you have to practice it so much that you remain calm when performing....
The say Dale Earnhardt's heart rate rarely rose about 60 beats a minute while whizzing around Talladega at 200 mph. At those speeds all motions have to be smooth and precise, not herky-jerky. Being calm and relaxed allows for that.
Same thing with drag racing to a different degree, you can't work the clutch properly (smooth) and the shifter if you're not calm and relaxed.
Black328iS 09-29-2003, 12:27 PM launching is definitely something i need to work on as well....
From now on, I'll try to use the word «reflexive» more often, followed by :pimpflash
I didn't know that word.
That being said, thanks a bunch man. I'll try to race more and be calmer. Hey... that sounds like a way to avoid a ticket :
«No officer, I was not racing this guy. I was practicing for a real race; I was merely monitoring my heart rate. That I happened to rape this riced-out Civic is purely coincidental.»
:D
SilverStreak 09-29-2003, 12:58 PM Just make sure you have the blood-pressure monitor cuff around your arm when he pulls you over... :D
"Officer, my doctor, Dr. Dave :smoke3: said I should check my blood pressure while drag racing as part of my racing training..."
:laugh
LOL!
The doctor reference...
SilverStreak 09-29-2003, 05:00 PM Watch him stick a gun in your ear just to see if the blood pressure guage is working... :D
I'd be like «huh... this wasn't supposed to be part of my training; can I canll my doctor? Or my lawyer?»
:D
Dark Helmet 09-30-2003, 02:56 PM The real reason Hugo "lost".....
Ugly Exhaust. :D:D:D
My exhaust may be ugly, but I've never worn a pink shirt.
:D
323I Junkie 09-30-2003, 03:01 PM He says that pink shirt is actually "salmon"
Right. And my exhaust is actually a SuperSPRINT...
:D

If you play God on me, I'll register on germantechnik and talk behind your back like a bunch of members here (that shall remain nameless) who go over there and complain about threads being towed, locked, how Z3s are chick cars, etc...

MGregski 10-01-2003, 08:59 AM  Gotta have a backup plan:D

MGregski 10-01-2003, 10:18 AM :devillook what's that supposed to mean :astromile
SilverStreak 10-01-2003, 10:27 AM Just that Hugo does not behave in a manner consistent with what one could label him as a punk. ;)

SilverStreak 10-01-2003, 10:49 AM Well, like we say at kick-boxing... if the truth hurts... live in pain... ;)
sirtiger 10-01-2003, 11:00 AM people can be blind to the truth as well ;)
SilverStreak 10-01-2003, 11:03 AM Ain't that the damn truth... or they can just be totally ignorant/unknowing... Matter of perspective, I suppose...
sirtiger 10-01-2003, 11:11 AM Its always a matter of perspective....which makes these forums so colorful. But many come around in full circle sooner or later.... :)
sirtiger 10-01-2003, 11:16 AM I better not continue to hijacking this thread or bad things will happen....... :devillook

Nah, don't lock it up dave. We'll behave so that things don't turn ugly.
It would be too easy.

Let me tell you what happened.
I made a bad editorial choice that made me feel like an ass and removed it.
Plain and simple.

Yeah, I read that post. I did not think it was way out of line. You were not being mean, but informative.
No biggy.
I was about to respond to the last part of that post with a zinger. But that was squashed when it got deleted.

other than that i do everything in the shifting tutorial that dude posted.
i dont like what the tutorial said about 2-3...that would make you go to 5th even more likely!!
but its what is best for you IMO....

Right...
A noob who doesn't disclose his location, and talks to Dave in EXACTLY the same fashion as some «other» people, going so far as saying Dave has 30k posts, which is wrong (for now). The only people who talk about Dave having 30k posts are not bf.c regulars, and much less newbies.
