View Full Version : DIY Day #3 (HI)
IslandS62 09-26-2003, 03:07 PM OK is everyone up for DIY III?
I decided I am ready to tackle the tranny and rear differential fluid. “Lifetime” fluids are a concept that I just don’t buy into. I have been doing a little research and it seems the recommended fluids, at least for my car, is Redline D4ATF and 75W90 for the rear. Since we were able to elevate Thrills cars with the two Aluminum jacks to remove the exhaust last time, I figure we can use the same system to access and drain the tranny.
Any other suggestions or procedures someone else wants to attempt?
The Beastmaster 09-26-2003, 05:39 PM Park it on a curb over a storm drain. :)
Maybe get thrlls top side oiler and use that to drain the fluids. Then dump it down the storm drain at WGs. :biglaughb
thrlls 09-26-2003, 06:42 PM Beastmaster, you are :evil2
Poor little fish!
Sounds good to me on the DIY III.
I probably won't be doing anything, but I'll come to support and help. :redspot
Where and when?

IslandS62 09-26-2003, 07:14 PM Why, your house of course :)
j/k as always you guys are welcome at my place. It can wait until we have a few more things to do...I'm not in a rush.

I'll e/m ZZZING and see if he has anything he needs to do. I'm planning on installing some hockey sticks from Leather Z this Saturday after work, but that's about all I got for now.
My place is always open, I just didn't want to always have others drive out to my place. Unless you guys don't mind. But if you are doing your oil, it might be better that you don't get your engine too hot. Plus I'd like to see your other toyzzz :para:

thrlls 09-27-2003, 03:18 AM :angryfire Damn Road Blunder!
My email is down again!
Piss, fuck, shit, damn!
I feel so much better now....damn, shit, fuck, piss....NOT!
The Beastmaster 09-27-2003, 03:49 AM Geez Wood, don't have a coronary! Use the backdoor. http://email.hawaii.rr.com/mail/mail.exe
IslandS62 09-27-2003, 02:28 PM mmm....leather hockey sticks :) cool. I've been wanting to do another order with the Maddux Bros. but I will just go nuts if I do. Let me know how the hockey stick install goes...its quite involved right? You need to remove the door panels and melt the plastic on the back of the new piece to get it to stick...
Did you see the writeup on Andy's Z Coupe in this months Bimmer mag?
thrlls 09-27-2003, 08:05 PM Yeah, that was Andy's car. I don't car too much for the steering wheel leather pieces, but I'm starting to think about getting the A pillar piece. I got a CD for the instructions, doesn't look too bad. You can either melt or use the clips that Andy sends with the sticks. I haven't started yet, I just got home. I might do it tomorrow since I'm having a beer. Rough day at work. I had to write up two managers....bummer :(

If I may ask, how much are the fluids going to cost?
IslandS62 09-29-2003, 06:01 PM No idea, I am asssuming not too much. Try calling Redline on Kam Hwy. for a quote.
The Beastmaster 09-29-2003, 06:10 PM Tranny fluid changes get a little MESSY! I hate getting messy. You should have see the mess I made with the 328ic when I changed her oil. Oil all over the place! Who the heck would have put a Xbrace right under the oil plug!
ZZZING 09-30-2003, 01:59 AM but it's been sitting around for a while. Owen gave it to me the year before last, I think all the containers have been opened at one time. I think I need to get some new fresh fluid for the trans, the diff was changed not too long ago by the dealer when it was leaking.
ZZZING 10-01-2003, 01:46 AM Gotta make plans, get some fluids etc.

DesmoBob 10-01-2003, 05:07 PM :95 what are hockey sticks? :95
IslandS62 10-01-2003, 05:40 PM what are hockey sticks?
They are a MCoupe/Roadster thing. The doors have a plastic strip running through them that look like hockey sticks. There is a couple of guys online that specialize in covering all things Z3 with leather, and they are making quite a name for themselves in the Z community.
Thrills, ZZZing and I all have thier stuff in our cars.
Hockey sticks (http://leatherz.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=01&Product_Code=Hockeysticks&Category_Code=Z3)
There a few names out there that support a cottage industry of Z3 products, and they all seem to be doing a surprisingly large amount of business, despite being relatively unknown to other BMW enthusiasts.

Who's free this Sunday? :)
EDIT: I do not have anything I need to install or change. I do have the day free though.
The Beastmaster 10-09-2003, 02:37 AM I'm busy. :( Saturday, too.

When is good for you?
Wait before you answer that question, you must first spill the beans as to which goodies you purchased from AA. ;)
The Beastmaster 10-09-2003, 04:06 AM I don't need anything installed either. Just thought that IslandS52 wanted to do some work. You think that those topside oil changers can be used to drain his tranny and diff?
The stuff from AA? Nothing much to get excited about.
You still have your stock M3 wheels and tires?

I have no experience with topside oil changers.
Sorry, I have donated the M3 wheels and tires to the 330ci.

IslandS62 10-15-2003, 05:17 PM OK gang...I need some help mounting my new exhaust system. It is scheduled to be here in about a week, so I will be hosting DIY day #3 in exchange for installation help :D
So, I am think the weekend of October 25...either Saturday or Sunday. We can have it in my garage or if anyone else has another location...I am open to suggestions. I have an aluminum jack, 4 jack stands, basic hand tools (but I don't have everything).
Please post:
A) which day you prefer
B) what work you want to do on your car
C) what you guys want for lunch
D) anything else of interest...
Aloha guys! :buttrock
IslandS62 10-15-2003, 05:27 PM Here is the mission, should you choose to accept.
Unfortunately, this is not my pool :bawl
I'm in Aiea BTW. I will post or PM the address when the time draws nearer.
The Beastmaster 10-15-2003, 06:36 PM 1. Sunday is good
2. Adjust my sway bar to the soft position
3. Your SO is going to cook?
4. Shoot the shit about Street Survival, BMW CCA OCS, website ...
Tools??? Didn't you just win a nice set of tools? That exhaust is sweet and it shouldn't be as bad as thrlls exhaust, considering your car lives in a hermetically sealed cocoon. Thrll's car was a mess and I was eating a lot of dirt doing the removal. Maybe that was the result of his off road excursions?
thrlls 10-15-2003, 06:38 PM What pool?
Nice exhaust! What type? Eisenmann, Dinanmann?
A) I'd prefer Sat. 25th, as Sun 26th is Auto X day, and I haven't been to one for the past 2 months.
B) I don't have anything to do on my car except to hunt down that thumping sound. I have a topside oil changer if anyone wants to do a change. We could try it on your trans.
C) Lunch: No biggie here, Pork 'n Beans with Sardines and rice! Or anything else...don't matter much to me as you can see.
D) Let me borrow your Photo shop program, & see your :ak
IslandS62 10-15-2003, 07:42 PM What pool?
Exactly :(
3. Your SO is going to cook?
I said DIY day, not HELL IS FROZEN Day :devillook

thrlls,
you can borrow my PS5 program.
ZZZING 10-16-2003, 02:02 AM I agree with thrlls, Saturday is much better, Sunday is reserved for AutoX. Then again, that leaves me no day to go diving...Hmmm, well I may not make it to the DIY, I don't have anything at present to do on my car. But keep me posted
Saturday, October 25th is a lapping session and Sunday, October 26th is an autocross.
Dammit! :(
The Beastmaster 10-16-2003, 06:51 PM Friday, October 24th?

IslandS62 10-17-2003, 02:26 AM well, I need to go to work on Friday, plus the exhaust is not due to arrive until Friday afternoon. If you guys still want to have a DIY on Friday that someone else can host, that's cool with me :)
I can probably manage the exhaust on Saturday on my own.
The Beastmaster 10-17-2003, 02:50 AM I'm still good for Saturday. Are thrlls and ZZZING going to the test and tune?
thrlls 10-17-2003, 02:57 AM If it's on Saturday, I'll be there!
What time?
ZZZING 10-17-2003, 03:00 AM Not going to the track on Saturday, but I will probably go diving.
Gotta test out my new toys for underwater fun. Sorry, the timing doesn't work for me. Also I may have to work that afternoon, bleah!
thrlls 10-17-2003, 03:05 AM Beastmaster, I got a PS prog from my brother, but thanks for the offer. Now it's time to play.....well when I have the time.
JP, I hope your SO doesn't read this thread, but then again she may not mind. This way she knows you know she won't cook, so she is not pressured to do so, and won't. :D
Watch out, those Venutians can be tricky :eyesscan
:checkered
The Beastmaster 10-17-2003, 03:13 AM If she does cook, we can tell her her cooking is out of this world! The people of what world, planet or galaxy eats that kind of food, I have no idea! :biglaughb
thrlls 10-17-2003, 12:10 PM ZZZING, you got new underwater toys?
Do you now have a spear?
IslandS62 10-17-2003, 05:01 PM lol...well Anna is fine with the ribbing, she knows that she can't cook (she can't clean either, but one step at a time)
Looks like Saturday is going to be the day. Hopefully Fed Ex won't screw the pooch again and the exhaust will be here on Friday, which will give me the evening to polish it up all nice :D
I am usually up by 7:30 so anytime after about 8 is fine. Dean will be coming to help too, so if one of you Hawaii Kai guys want to arrange a carpool that might work out easier. You can ride in his "new" Jaguar:confused:
If any other members want to stop by, you are, of course welcome, but please let me know if you are going to be doing work on your car, and what you want to do so the garage is prepared. PM me for the address. Also lunch suggestions would be great...how about Korean plates?
mmm...new exhaust :redspot
I'm going to BMW Honolulu tommorrow to get some new mounting hardware...anyone need anything?
ZZZING 10-17-2003, 10:19 PM No tako dinner for you thrlls, just some new camera gadgets (red filter and flash diffuser) and a new BCD. IslandS52, I probably won't make this one, next time. I still gotta do brakes, brake lines, suspension, there's always something.
IslandS62 10-18-2003, 12:42 AM No problem Andy, the garage is (almost) always open!
Hope you get some great shots! Post some!
thrlls 10-18-2003, 01:56 AM Cleaning? She doesn't clean?
Now why should she even bother to clean, she has YOU!:D
Anytime after 8? Now if I car pool with Dean, in his car, that could turn out to be anytime after 12:00. He's just getting home at 8:00. :biglaughb
Korean sounds good to me, but no biggie.
I'll be there at 8.
thrlls 10-18-2003, 02:01 AM ZZZING looking forward to seeing those pics with your new filters. New BCD huh? Theres your rotors & b-lines!
I guess I'm really going to have to join you one of these days and I'll bring the spear :D Then we can go to Tako Hut!
The Beastmaster 10-21-2003, 03:36 AM Are we on for Saturday?
IslandS62 10-21-2003, 02:37 PM We are GO for Saturday.
Here is the tentative attendance list, please let me know if you want to be added or removed from the list...
Beastmaster: adjust rear anti roll bar, BMWCCA business
Thrlls: To help out
Dean: To help out
ja///mn: Wants to stop by
Brian: Stopping by
myself: Exhaust installation
If you guys have anything you want to do to the cars, please post and we can arrange to tackle it. Dean is very knowledgable and is there for technical assistance.
If we don't have mech stuff to do, I'll be happy to make my buffer and detailing equipment available to those who attend. Maybe like a mini detail session...
The Beastmaster 10-21-2003, 05:54 PM You think those swirl marks on my car will come out?
IslandS62 10-21-2003, 06:19 PM Will take some work, but I'm sure we can get most of them out...factory non-metallic paint is pretty easy to work with :D
What time is it going to be on Sat?
and what part of the island?
Oni

IslandS62 10-22-2003, 12:24 AM Aiea...probably most of the morning into maybe early afternoon.
PM me if you want the address...
IslandS62 10-23-2003, 03:44 AM Dean may not be able to make it on Saturday. He says the exhaust should be an easy install though.
Please PM me if you need my address and directions.
IslandS62 10-23-2003, 04:36 PM I have PM'ed my address and directions to everyone who said they wanted to attend. A few said they may stop by. If you are interested in attending or stopping by please let me know and I will send you the directions.
Thrlls or Beastmaster: Do either of you have a breaker bar and a torque wrench that reads to 100lbs/ft. that you can bring? If not let me know and I will go buy one...
The Beastmaster 10-23-2003, 05:30 PM Got the torque wrench, need the breaker bar? What about an extra jack and jack stands?
IslandS62 10-23-2003, 05:49 PM I have four jack stands a coupe more wouldn't hurt. We can support the exhaust on them, also use them as extra support if we lift your 540. An extra jack might be nice, it helped when we lifted Thrlls car last time...
thrlls 10-23-2003, 07:10 PM I'll bring a breaker bar, jack, a pair of stands, whatever else I can fit in my tool bag/trunk, and most importantly, duct tape!
Vroooom Vroooom!
The Beastmaster 10-25-2003, 03:33 AM What time?
I'm bringing the torque wrench.
Reid, are you coming? If so bring the exhaust.
IslandS62 10-25-2003, 04:04 AM I think thrlls is going to be here early, like 8am...you know him! I'll be out there around that time...so whenever!
I actually got the driver side exhaust on this evening. It was actually very easy. Its very LOUD though. Not sure I like it yet...
We'll see tommorrow.
thrlls 10-25-2003, 11:06 PM Mahalo IslandS52, for hosting DIY 3. We were able to accomplish all that was planned. Nice to meet Onik, and see his 325. Next time we can do some oil changes, and hopefully IslandS52 can bring his dent removal guy.
IslandS52, you scored big time on that exhaust, nice catch!
Your car now sounds as good as it looks, and drives just as fast as it looks too!
Mahalo for letting me test drive :D :D :D
Another successful DIY :alright
The Beastmaster 10-26-2003, 01:12 AM Yes, that B&B exhaust sounded sweet! Thanks for the help in buffing out my car. Now I'm on the quest for a Porter Cable.
IslandS62 10-26-2003, 03:13 AM Thanks for coming guys :D, and for those of you that didn't....BOOooo :(
We had a wedding to go to tonight so I took the Coupe and boy is that thing L-O-U-D. At 2000 rpm in any gear the interior of the car is just a ROAR. Driving it in traffic is going to be an aural experience! We set off about 5 car alarms at the Sheraton parking lot too, which is something that the car has never done before. This will take some getting used to...I guess my car is ricey now with 4 "soda can" exhausts. At the next driving event I will be giving a certain Mini Cooper a good run for its money in the maximum Db contest. :)
I can't imagine what the B&B "loud" system sounds like.
Hey guys thanks for having me over:cool:
and it was great to meet you guys, and will be looking forward to the next DIY and yea next time ill have the neccessary things to do my oil change...i also have a small dent on my car if you can get your dent guy to come to the next one, that would rock :buttrock
oh yea, thanks for the home-made cheese cake...it was the bomb! and for those that didnt make it you missed out...hehehe:devillook
oh yea i went to the UH game and it was a pretty good game...not a great one but not too bad...
also....is my signature pic comming out? can you guys see it?
The Beastmaster 10-26-2003, 08:29 AM Yes, we can see it! Looks like you had to touch up the BMWCCH logo on the corners. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it done four our webpage. Maybe later.
IslandS62 10-26-2003, 02:29 PM I can't see the sig Oni...let me know if you need help trying to fix it, but I think its a web hosting issue.
thrlls: I saw this post on Roadfly, you might want to check your bolts as I know you have some noises back there...
Fixed the clunk! Latest report

FINALLY!
My dad has been driving my car for a while. He said it was ok but annoying. So After trying the following we were stumped:
Replace shocks
Replace shock mounts
Replace Sway bar
Replace swaybar links
Replace gas tank
Replace gas tank emmisions thing
Remove and reinstal the Diff
Remove and reinstall the entire interior behind the drivers seat..
So finally what was it?
It was the conrol arm suspension bolts decided they wanted to back out.. And they did.. So Problem fixed.. AINT THAT SOME SHITE!
ja///Mnn 10-26-2003, 03:26 PM Sorry I missed the DIY event. I've been out since Fri with the flu and now starting to feel somewhat better....Sounds like y'all had a successful gathering. If my alarm keeps going off, i'll know it's either that darn Harley or you know who.
Well, hopefully I can make the next one...Aloha
thrlls 10-27-2003, 12:39 AM IslandS52 - Your exhaust is L-O-U-D???
Letting-Out-Untamed-Decimals.....so what's your point :D
You have become the official BMWCCH calibrater for car alarms!
Onik - I can see your sig.. looks cool! Very creative I must say.
Beastmaster - let me know if you find a good deal on a Porter Cable...7424 model, I checked :D

I do not think that Geocities allows remote linking.
thrlls 10-27-2003, 01:21 AM Strange how some can see Onik's sig and others can't.
IslandS52 - mahalo for the roadfly info. I'll check out my arms, but the last time I checked, they were attached to my shoulder pretty good! (had to say that) When I looked last, it seemed that it was okay, but I was not intentionally looking for any loose bolts there.

I was dead tired after yesterday's trackday.
I ended up waking up at 12 or so today. :(
How did it go?
BTW, did you happen to notice any fresh rubber marks near turn 1? ;)
thrlls 10-27-2003, 03:00 AM As a matter of fact I did. It was a little towards the left though. I thought that might be from the drag racers.
It was too hot today. I had my a/c on as I staged for my run. I was considering leaving it one during the run since it wouldn't make much of a diff on MY times:(
I need some pointers from all you fast guys!
So how was the track day? Are they having another one this coming Saturday 11/01? I'm planning on working at one.
I'll bring my helmet just in case!

Cheapest so far is @ $114 for the 7424. Any ideas about the 7428? 10amp motor, but slower speeds.

Was it on the mauka side of turn 1? A little off to the side of the apex?

I'm not fast by any means, but I notice that a lot of people lose time because of the way they slow down. Brake hard, brake fast, and then get back on the gas. One should never be coasting or braking lightly. Brakes only slow you down, so I try to use them sparingly.
There's a driver's school/test and tune on November 1.

I was scheduled for heat 4 so I came late, saw you on the track but you boogied before I could say hi.
Fun track, car was hooked up but the driver wasn't, couldn't get a clean run (I kept getting a cones coming out of the start).
Was very hot/humid in the afternoon, must have consumed a half gallon plus of h20.
