This DIY is for adding Bluetooth with Voice Command features to your 1998 to 2006 BMW E46 Sedan, Coupes and Convertibles. This DIY focuses on integrating an aftermarket bluetooth and voice command into the BMW Business CD53 Radio (all year Blaupunkt or Alpine models) so that you control your mobile phone's incoming and outgoing calls only using the steering wheel buttons and your voice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2xgV9v9Iak
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0uJwknn3qw
The DIY difficulty of this project is very easy and takes the average Joe about 30-40 minutes. The only tools required are clean fingers, a star point screw driver and flat clean dull butter knife for prying the dash trim off. There is no splicing wires, no removing seats or console armrest, no adding antennas on your roof or digging around your trunk for cables. This DIY ONLY requires removal of the Radio, Center Vent and Glove Box (total of 10 screws) and everything else is plug and play. Some DIYs state that removal of the A P!llar is necessary for running the mic to the headliner but I will show you that it is NOT necessary to remove the A P!llar.
The cost of this DIY can vary. You will need to purchase the Connects2 CTPPAR007 steering wheel integration kit from the UK vendor
( http://www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk/lcca/mia/d/connects2+ctppar007+bmw+parrot+bluetooth+steering+ wheel+adapter/pid/7642231 ) and their price is set at £49.99 (about $80.00 USD). And next you will need to order the Parrot CK3000 Bluetooth kit (it is also called the Parrot ck3000 evolution) which can cost from $9.00 and up on eBay. You do not need to buy anything else nor can you substitute other Parrot Bluetooth kits or aftermarket Steering Wheel/Radio Adapter harnesses. It will not work here. Also do not get tempted to save money on the CTPPAR007 and buy another similar Steering Wheel Control Adapter harness-and they are lots out there that claim to work with various bluetooth kits. It will not work here. This DIY will ONLY WORK with the CTPPAR007 and the Parrot ck3000 together!
When said and done this DIY will upgrade your BMW with much of what the OEM Bluetooth does including instant and automatic pairing and unpairing when you enter or exit the car, one button touch voice command, one button touch redial and full radio and steering wheel integration. The only thing you will not get is full Caller ID read out on your radio display-instead it will display PHONE or WAIT. This is something I can do without as I may have people sitting in my car and I do not want them to see who is calling me (see under girlfriend).
PART ONE: Looking at what we got
Here I got everything I needed off eBay. You need the CTPPAR007 kit which you can also find on eBay or eBay.co.uk. The vendor states that the CTPPAR007 is for the 1998 to 2001 E46 and the CTPPAR008 is for the 2002 to 2005 E46. This is wrong the CTPPAR007 has the 17 pin style connecter that all year BMW E46 cars and all year BMW Business CD53 Radios come with.
The CTPPAR008 is the flat style 40 pin connector that is found on the 2006+ E90 BMWs. So that will not work on the E46.

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/2206/98978786.jpg
When you open the Parrot ck3000 kit you will see the obvious main bits (the blue box, the mic and the controller) and you will also see a bag filled with a few wire harnesses and a black rectangular module for connecting to the radio and allowing for the mute function. You do not need this since the CTPPAR007 will replace this portion of the ck3000 kit. Also you MUST HAVE the ck3000 Controller connected to the main blue box in order for the CTPPAR007 to make the steering wheel buttons work with the kit. You do not need the controller on your dash when using the Bluetooth as it only needs to be connected so you can tuck it behind the glovebox with the other modules.

PART THREE: Installing the Guts
NOTE: For ease of understanding this DIY I've taken the liberty of labeling the Harness Head Connectors as A, B and C. This labeling is only specific to this DIY and not used by Parrot or Connects2.
The A Connector is what you have in your car right now. It is what connects the car to the BMW Business CD53 Radio. With the exception of the possible Data Link mini connectors that attach to the bottom section brackets(you may or may not have these Data Links in your car's A Connector depending on whether your car has prewiring for the CD Changer or AUX input/Sirius/Ipod Data Links) these are all the same on all BMW E46 vehicles from 1998 to 2006.
The B Connector. This is what will replace the function of your A Connector when you install the kit. Or a better way to say this is that it will take on the role of the A Connecter in connecting directly to the CD53 Radio and also carrying any Data Link connectors that you have going into the Radio.
The C Connector forms a connection with the original A Connector in your car thus connecting the entire Bluetooth system AND CD53 Radio to the rest of the car (IE. for power, ground, speakers, etc...). This C/A Connection is the only thing that adds difficulty to the DIY as it is hard to tuck away behind the Radio when replacing the Radio unit. So we must set the C/A Connection above the radio space and to the side of the upper Center Vent space.

Yeah just push the old OEM Mic to the side if you do not want to take it out completely.
The newer Parrot Mic is quite good.

Hi Delmarco,
Great DIY mate. Thanks for all your efforts.
There is only one thing which I couldn't see in the picture is, the little controller of Parrot ck3000. I can see that it has been attached to BlueBox ( parrot ck3000) but after that I can't see anywhere in the pictures.
Did you just put it behind the glove box with the bluebox or installed it somewhere on the dash board ?
I did take a look at user guide of CK3000EVO, I saw that we should use this controller to configure the blue-tooth functions like Voice Recognition and other stuff.
Thanks

The controller is next to the bluebox behind the glovebox area.
It MUST be connected for the steering wheel button to work. But you can hide it away as you will NEVER interface with it directly.
Burn the ck3000 manual you will not use the ck3000 as the manual states. The ctppar007 comes with a 1 page instruction on how to set it up.
Is there a difference between the ck3000 and the ck3000 "black" edition?
color option is the only difference and the black color will be the latest production which also means latest firmware.
I been getting a few PMs from folks with GPS Factory Navigation units looking for the 17 pin A Connector in their cars or wondering if they have the same connections.
From what I can tell you do have the same A Connector but it is location in the trunk with teh GPS Computer ECU/DVD module.
and it will look like this
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/1757/trunkelecm3.jpg
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/7062/trunkcoaxsm3.jpg
So you will need to hook up the parrot ck3000 and ctppar007 all in this trunk space and run the mic thru to the cabin dash area. The ck3000 mic wire is long enough to pass thru the firewall into the cabin along the driver's side and you can place it on the dash or A p!llar column. If it is short you can get a mic cable extender at Radio Shack or any electronics store.
Is it definately in the trunk? I have looked at the following site and there don't seem to be any mention of a seperate unit.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=BS52&mospid=47605&hg=65&fg=45
Because you have the on board monitor you should have the BM53 receiver in the trunk and you do not have the CD53 head unit in the dash. I found the parts number with a picture from a 12/02 E46. Funny thing is the picture shows that the 17 pin connector is not the same on the BM53 instead it has the ctppar008 style 40 flat pin connector.
So you would definitely NEED to open up your trunk lining and pull this unit out to confirm what it has before ordering the ctppar007. As you may end up needing the ctppar008 or a relevant adapter for the DIY.

Should be covered by the last post in the DIY, I don't see how a convertible would differ. The nav system is the same.
On another note, how about using the factory mic or at least the factory mic wiring for those with nav? Has anyone looked in to that? The wiring should be in the right area since it's there for the TCU/ULF.

Excellent write-up! However, is there a setup that also support bluetooth stereo audio (A2DP)? If I can find that, I'm doing it for sure!
Hi,
I have a 2000 E46 330ci which has the Monitor, TV and HK sound, will this connect up to the back of the monitor.

I don't know what that is.
Is that refering to the ability to play music from your blackberry or iphone or mobile device thru the car over the bluetooth channel?
I have a Tom Tom Go 720 and I think it does indeed have this Bluetooth Stereo (ie. you can play music thru the Tom Tom speaker from your cell phone) you speak of but it is really shitty sound quality.
As for the phone reception all the cars speakers are used to provide the incoming sound (so you get a nice quality surround stereo sound of the incoming caller's voice that fills your cabin) and your voice is trammitted thru the Parrot's ck3000 mic to the person on the other end.

Yes, A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) is the ability to play stereo music through the car's sound system. I'd like to be able to have all audio from my phone go through the car's speakers over bluetooth, both calls and music, while still be able to control the music from the steering wheel controls. So far not much luck in finding a way to do this, unless one of the newer Parrot modules that supports A2DP would be able to do that in substitution for the one you used in this DIY.

Will it work with my 2006 E91? Touring 325xi. It's got a business-pro stereo.

Did it on a 2001 325i, Brilliant read.
Right hand drive, so I mirrored it, all fine.
I made a few changes:
(I shoulda taken pics)
You don't have to remove the vent. I seperated the CD stacker lines at the bottom and passed the other harness over the top of that support beam next to it, and made the connection behind the glovebox.
Then join the C2 harness there and there was just enough length to get it back to the player, connected and slotted back in. I pulled on the harness from the glovebox as I slid it back in.
I also stuck the mic sideways so that the end points at the driver. sounds perfect according to the people I called.
The only other one is that the Glovebox wouldn't sit right when I put it in those little white pigeon holes. So I sat it all beside for now. will double-sided tape it into place later on...
Works brilliantly.
I fed the Parrot controls down to the near the handbrake, as the menu doesn't seem available on the steering. (Not that there's much in the way of options on it anyway....)
All up $360AUD. (Strathfield for Parrot, eBay UK for C2 Harness)
You da man! :)
Also brohism, you could get around the A2DP sound issue by using a line-in adapter and a A2DP to RCA box like the Motorola DC800 (below)
The only issue here is I don't know if it will cut out when the Parrot takes over the call. It'd be easy to test that without fitting it thou.
Then music would be via the Motorola as Aux-in, and parrot doing calls.

Hi,
I have the connects2 module in my car, and have a quick question for you. Do you find that sometimes, when you press the speech button on your steering wheel to "Say a command" that the voice saying "say a command" comes through your phone not the speakers? Then when you turn your car/bluetooth off and back on it will come back through the car speakers?
Most of the time it will come through the car speakers as normal but the odd time it comes through the phone handset?
Just want to know that its not just mine?
Thanks!
I know exactly the problem you are having. When I installed my Sirius and iPod USA-Spec Data Module last month in my car I forgot to unplug the radio and the battery. And since then my Bluetooth kept sending the voice command prompt thru the phone instead of thru the car speakers like it did before.
To fix this issue I first unplugged the car's battery and unplugged all the radio/bluetooth components, then I replugged everything and finally I reconnected the battery and everything is working perfect now.
I think at the parrot/connects installation for some year cars or radios unplugging the battery may be required before plugging in the components.
My kit worked perfect for three months after I first installed it, but the minute I connected other newer components to the radio like Satellite Radio and USA-Spec iPod Data, and I even upgraded the radio itself to the 02/2006 Alpine CD53 version at some point, then the Bluetooth kept sending the commands to the phone instead of the car.
Everything is working fine now.
Hmmm...the first day or two, I was told that the bluetooth sounded great!!! But since then, I'm being told that I sound muffled, background noise and static. I called my answering machine and spoke for about 2-3 minutes and it surely isn't crystal clear. Before I drop the glovebox, anyone with troubleshooting ideas? FYI, I'm using a Touch Pro on Sprint and haven't changed anything with the phone.
Best Advice is to drop your glove box and check the connections then pull out your radio and unplug and plug the connector back onto the radio. Also unplugging your battery may remedy it as well.
On a side note when I was installing my USA-Spec iPod Data Unit last weekend I had to drop the glove box to store the Spec unit next to the Parrot Blue box and funny enough I noticed my Parrot Controller red/green buttons were active and lit up (as the car and the radio and bluetooth was on with the engine running). Pushing these red/green buttons and dial button activated the call features and setting features of the Bluetooth. I also noticed that it was squished in there between all the wiring and stuff behind the glove box.
The thought that occurred to me is that if your controller buttons are wedged in a getting constantly pressed by nearby objects then it may result in poor sound performance, issues with the steering wheel control buttons and all other types of weirdness.
So be sure to make sure the controller and it's buttons are all clear from contact with wiring and objects.
And yes the buttons on the little bugger are really very very very sensitive . As I was installing my USA-Spec I kept setting of the Bluetooth's voice/language settings everytime I brushed against the thing.

Thanks for the excellent DIY, you got me in doing this too since I drive alot.
Got a problem though, I ordered the CK300 but instead they sent me the Eclipse bt-E600 by parrot kit. The blue box is exactly the same, it does say universal kit and on the back the little sticker says "Parrot CK3000 Eclipse". The controller is also the same but says Eclipse on top. The harness they sent me looks the same too but I guess I wont be needing that harness anyways.
Can I use this or should I sent it back and get only the CK3000, which to me is the same except the harness is different.
Thank you

I don't know what you got. It says ck3000 on some parts and eclipse bt-600 on other parts?
I'm not sure. If the connections are the same and the software is the same as the ck3000 then it should work.
EDIT: okay...I did some googling
I see this is what they sent you...
http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/4975/bte600box.jpg
According to Crutchfield this is a re-labled version made for an Eclipse AVN6620 receiver, meaning that the wire harness is specific to the Eclipse AVN6620 receiver but you don't need that anyway once you have the Connects2 harness.
So you should be fine.
Thanks alot for everything man.
The problem is, I paid $65(shipped) for the ck3000 and the same seller is selling this eclipse version they sent me for $40(shipped) if its the same unit then we might as well buy this since its cheaper
If you are sure, I'll have them refund me the 25 bucks. I just want to be stuck later on. You are right about the label, there is an extra label on top of the original one which says Eclipse on it.

Hey Delmarco,
Nice job on writing this up. I just purchased these two items (prices seem to be going up for them) and hope to receive them soon to try out. The connects2 product seems to only be available in Europe. I went the Ebay route on this one, but is there a local US distributor for the connects2 adapter. Oh, I also got the CTPPAR008 version, based on Connects2's fitment page on their website. Guess I have the newer bus.
I'll let everyone know how this goes on my E39!
I got the Connects2 Harness but there are no instructions on the box to connect the steering wheel functions, would you happen to have those?
Thanks again

I moved my oem location for the mic grill closer to the driver side where my head is, and more aft in the cabin where the other passengers are.
I didn't have a problem with the mic before, but I'm told that my voice comes across more clearer and louder now.
I tried switching it over to the sunroof switch hole but I quickly realized that the sunroof switch is bigger and the switch hole is bigger than the mic grill and mic grill hole. So the mic grill was too small for the sunroof switch's hole and the sunroof switch didn't even fit into the mic grill's hole. So I decided to create a new cut out hole for the mic grill that was in a new position. I also added a BMW Bluetooth Assist/SOS switch at the same time, which incidentally our cars are prewired for and just filed down the original mic grill hole so that the sunroof switch could fit in there.
The BMW Bluetooth Assist button can be bought off eBay for about $10 to $25 (DO NOT buy the ones Murad Motors sells as he overprices his switches to $50 and they don't come prewired). Make sure you get the older style switch with the two buttons like in my pictures below. This is the switch that our cars are pre wired for and you will find the wiring for this switch inside your sunroof switch hatch.
Follow these steps.
Mark out your outline...make it slightly smaller than the actual hole that you will use
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/1736/bmwassistsos5.jpg
Then get a sharp knife and cut away at the plastic until you feel it flex at the cut so it just snaps off.
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8324/bmwassistsos6.jpg
Your finished hole will be smaller which is good because you DO NOT want it to be too big.h
So get your file and file down the edges. The plastic will file away really quickly so go slow.
If you are placing the sunroof switch on the original mic grill spot you will have to file that hole down as well since the mic grill hole is smaller than the sunroof switch

Finished product. Make sure everything is lined up and if you mess up just go down to the dealership and buy another hatch lid cover as they only cost around $17 to $23.
DO NOT buy the junkyard ones off eBay as those junk yard sellers tend to want $40 - $60 for the same part in dirty used condition. I have confirmed that the BMW dealership sells these parts for $17 to $23!

so... what happens when you press the button?
As of now nothing. I just lights up and blinks and if it is trying to connect to the phone system.
This DIY really didn't turn out the way I'd hoped.
Always enjoy your DIY's but not sure what the purpose of this one was since they'll be non-functioning.
Thanks bro. *Sigh*. Yeah. I was hoping for alot more out of this one.
At any rate the switch only cost me $10 off ebay. And in the process I discovered our cars are prewired for the SOS switch in the headliner AND I was able to move my mic grill OEM location to a better spot.
I spoke to a BMW rep and they told me all they need is the vin number, my cell phone number, my home state & address and my car needs to have the OEM BMW bluetooth module and all its module parts installed and I would then pay $240 a year subscription for BMW Roadside/Tow Assist service and 24/7 Emergency concierge service to get the switch to work. (5,6 and 7 series get more perks like flat tire change (as in BMW brings you a new tire with champagne to sip whiles you wait, etc...) but they pay more for the service.)
That said, the Assist/SOS switch and Assist/SOS plug/play prewiring will only work with the oem Bluetooth module and I was told that even without a Subscription to the BMW Assist Service the Assist/SOS switch can still be programmed to speed dial 911 for emergency and another number for tow service via your mobile phone over the oem Bluetooth Module.
All the subscription really does is program the switch to speed dial BMW services of which you are subscribed to. But without a subscription you can program it to speed dial other numbers via the OEM Bluetooth system in your car.
Because of that I will leave it as is in my car in case I one day upgrade to the OEM BMW Navigation/Bluetooth.
On a positive note the new mic grill and mic location is much better! It is right over my head now and I sound amazing. The only downside is the new mic/mic grill location is slightly more susceptable to wind/road noise from an opened/tilted sunroof.

Great DIY's by you Delmarco.http://images.bimmerforums.com/vb3images/icons/icon14.gif
I am going to get bluetooth (also USA Spec :D) installed in my '05 325XI as well! I have bought CTPPAR007 (UK guys) and CK3000 from Ebay.
Just to know and help other guys here in forum, as I came across these sites after I bought my kit and harness, Do you know or can confirm in any way that "QCBMW-F" from http://www.quickconnectproducts.com work with CK3000 for steering wheel adapters instead of "CTPPAR007". This might be a cheaper alternative. Also, I am assuming this harness is standard for E46 and parrot kits and are same even for MKi series (say 6000 or Mki9000).
Does that also mean CTPPAR007 will work with MKi9000. I am asking this coz I am thinking to get MKi9000 (or 6000 If I find cheap one) as they support A2DP. Let me know what you think about it.
Also great Job in Mic placement. Do you think placing it in behind rear view mirror or between RV Mirror & cabin light is a good idea or will it be prone to Wind noise?

It should be good there. Once it is not clipped onto the A pillars or touching the windshield glass.

I did not see this posting and I placed an order with Low Cost Car Audio last week. I got an e-mail confirmation of my order. Did you get one too?
Then, I haven't heard from them.
Could you please give us some update what happened to your order since June?
Thanks

delmarco, thanks for the DIY. I put it to use yesterday.
(I did not remove center vent as previously posted by another guy)
Prices appear to have gone up, total cost was about $180
I bought the ctppar007 from this ebay seller: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250603526107 (seller = auto-electronics) They shipped very quickly.

Excellent DIY. I installed the bluetooth in my 330Ci this afternoon.
Couple of points - My vent was a REAL bitch to pull out. I really had to yank it.
Also - the convertible pillars must be different - it was extremely difficult to hide the wire across the top of the pillar. About 2 inches is showing in the seam. Fortunately, I have a black interior and the wire is barely noticeable.
I need to play around with the microphone. My Parrot only came with 2 clips and a plastic square piece with a groove in it (not sure how to use that). Either way, I currently just have it sitting in the overhear area. During the install I made a phone call with it exposed and again with it hidden. Both times my fiance said the calls were too hollow (exposed) or "distant sounding" (hidden in the overhead light. The openings for the microphone are on the left of the light in the convertible. So far, I like the sound quality on incoming audio, but am concerned about how I will sound to other people.
I will let you know the quality of the sound when driving with the top down, for those that may be interested.
Unfortunately, if anyone saw in my other post, I had an ""issue" with a valve cover stud tonight, so I can't take it out tonight. :(

delmarco,
This is and awesome DIY btw. I am looking into trying this out myself. However, I was looking around at other parrot car kits to see if any had the A2DP support. I wanted your opinion on if you think or know if the MK6000 or MK6100 might work with this DIY in place of the CK3000. Here is a link I found to their site, but I'm not sure if the connections on it are the same: http://www.parrot.com/uk/products/parrotmk6000/minisite
Thanks.

Most, if not all the available iPod adapters use the cd changer connection to connect to your stock receiver. I don't know that it's impossible, but it's probably not very easy. You could try PMing the OP as he may not be monitoring this thread.

I just recently completed this mod and found this to be very helpful and probably saved me a couple of hours of trying to figure out everything myself! The instructions are right on! Everything works as just as expected. Now I just have to find out how to reduce the horrible engine noise everyone is hearing on the other end of the conversation. Has anyone added a resistor or replaced the mic for better results? If so, please share! TIA!
I have this sdtup in my car but I did not install it I need to sync a new phone but the memory is full any ideas on resetting it without tearing into the dash to get to the parrot controllsr I did try and dissconect the battery for a couple of minutes but no go

Hello Guys!
I'm new to the forum (first post), but i've been checking all the info here for quite a while, and it's always been very helpful.
I wanted to ask you, If you got the chance to do the DIY with the BT-E600 kit? I've been checking on ebay, and it's a lot cheaper than the CK3000 . Maybe the harnes included on that last one is more expensive? (from what I see here, we won't need that anyway).
Thanks.

Hi everyone followed this DIY and it's brilliant however, I have just one issue when I make/receive a call the radio mutes as expected but I get no sound at all. The microphone also works fine and people can hear me. :-(
Any help would be appreciated I'm eager to get this going :-)
Thanks very much!

I saw this DIY and then decided to do it. Thanks..it worked a dream , and didn't take long at all. Had to use the parrot controller to store voice tags for voice dialling, so instead of hiding it, I fed it through the glove box so it is in the glove box if I need to add more voice tags in the future. I didn't have the sunroof panel so I just fed the mic along to the mirror and it sits on the mirror facing me
Thanks again for the pics etc
