Sure this isn't your typical kill story, but I got a kick out of it.

I was waiting at the last light before I reach my neighborhood. Its a straight road approx 1.5 miles long before I have to turn and relatively new so it is traveled lightly.

I'm waiting at the light and I hear the obnoxious sound of a riced out muffler and sure enough, a blue Miata pulls up next to me with an oversized muffler on it. This guy has his girl sitting next to him, and as we wait keeps throttling his engine.

I am driving a 2000 Land Rover Discovery, with enough off road mods on it to push it over 5k lbs. As we wait, I figure I'm gonna mess with this guy and pull the automatic transmission into the 3rd gear and press the 'sport' button behind it.

The light turns green and I flat out gun the engine, the rover takes off the line like an elephant with a pin stuck in its ass. I hear this guy hit his engine, it sounds like a llama being strangled.

I fully expect him to catch me any second and look over my left shoulder, I'm about 20 feet ahead of him and holding steady. I could not believe it. I could hear his engine just struggling. The rover was holding its own vs. the rice rocket. My light came up quickly and I started to slow (after pulling a 0-16 in about 18 seconds) and this guy cuts in front of me to try and prove something.

At that point, he had nothing left to prove. I guess there is a difference between the sound and the fury.

Nice kill. I'm surprised your Land Rover did so well against a very light Miata.:buttrock

Oh yeah..hopefully this thread doesn't get towed, since there was no BMW involved. However, BMW used to own Land Rover, so there's a chance that this thread may stay.

Heheheh. Welcome to the boards man. I wish I had enough money to keep a Rover and my bimmer. I love those things, and I really love off-roading.

Very nice.

What happaned was that when you engaged the sport mode button and pulled ahead, there was alot of black smoke coming from your tail pipe and this obviously blinded/chocked the Miata driver :D

hehehe probably. Honestly though, I think he had just ragged his engine out to the point there was nothing left under the hood.

But still, if your girl is in the car, know your limits man. Why embarrass yourself...

I figured it might, although when I bought the truck they were owned by BMW!. Once I've broken in the 525 I'm sure I'll have a story or two to post in here, although its not a rocket ship. I'll just pick on hondas.

mb3 where are you? You're in OC? There's an annoying Miata guy with a blue car with roll cage and a lot of mods that races everyone too, but I usually see him Arcadia right after 5 pm. I've seen him get a speeding ticket next to the race track! hehehehe

I pulled on a Miata (not the newest model, but the one before that) from a stoplight with my ES300 and also out cornered him through a clear highway off-ramp. Keep in mind that I have Kuhmo Ecsta Supra 225/45ZR17's on the ES300 and it actually does hold the road pretty well. Hahahaha, it sounds funny even saying that. He would have eaten me up in a slalom (body roll is a bitch), but I was pretty surprised that the ES "killed" the Miata from a stop and through the twisties. Kinda pathetic, if you ask me. :dunno

MB3, what are your off-road mods? I'm into off-roading myself.

I called in sick today, I'm headed to the trail right now. So long!

Nice, I just had a pretty wild trip last weekend. Its got a 3" lift with Old Man Emu springs and shocks, as well as an OME steering dampener and reinforced sway bars.

Sills are protected by Dreadnaught rock sliders, underside has QT differential guards.

In the very near future, I'm throwing on a TJM Bull Bar with a Winch. Especially since I damaged the stock bumper last weekend.

Have fun man :)

From 0-35 the Disco will outrun almost all 4 cylinders unless they launch perfectly. I took down numerous japanese coupes on local 2-into-1 merges that are popular within Montgomery County, MD.

I happen to think this guy is lucky...an the only way he beat this miata in a lowly Discovery is the guy wasnt racing. Miata's are not that slow, and can be very fast with minimum mods,Too bad my miata wasnt the potential victum.

I think luck had less to do with it than the fact this guy had ragged his engine to hell. Above the whine of his rice muffler I could hear a very sick sounding engine try and keep up.

Of course any smooth running miata is going to put my truck to shame. Thats why I got such a kick out of it, and went so far as to post the story in here.

Then again , don't try this in your miata:

The Miata is one of the most underpowered sports cars on the planet. We have one in the family. It's only meant for fun in the sun and autoX. It was targeted to be like the old British sport cars-- slow and cute.
