View Full Version : Not the usual race with a 350z - pricey outcome. (kind of long)

Last night I'm coming back from having dinner with my friends, listening to some tunes, when I see a 350z fly by me, slam on his brakes and match my speed. This is on rte. 290 West in Worcester.

Nice color, electric blue or whatever it is called. It's a guy in his 20's, smiles at me and nods his head. I do the same. I hear him downshift, so I drop it into 3rd and wait for him to punch it.:D He honks 3 times and we're off......

At the end of third I gained close to a car length on him, quick upshift into fourth and I'm still pulling..... we shut down around 100, I roll my window down, give him a thumbs up and take my exit.

To my surprise he follows me. At the light he compliments on my car and asks if I'd like to run again from a stop.

He follows me onto this industrial road in my area. We stop, line up, he gets out of his car and goes into the trunk:mad: Well you wanna play like that, huh? Oh well. I'll lose. Next time get a remote bottle opener :D

I've never seen a 350z on the bottle in action, so I want to race just to compare.

We get ready and we're off. I get a good launch and jump by a fender. Second gear comes and goes; I'm up by a little more than a car, just waiting for it to happen. Third, he hits the fun button and starts pulling. By fourth, he's by my side, starts to pass and BOOOOM! I slam on the brakes not really knowing what the hell happened, I can't see anything.

As I come to a complete stop, I realize that my windshield is broken, spiderweb all over. I get out, just to see the Z a few feet in front, covered in smoke. I run up just to see a huge bulge in the hood, the kid looking at his car, like a child that just dropped his ice cream cone.

He tells me that he juuuuust finished installing the kit and this was his test run. Nice test run.....blown engine, 2000 miles on the car, all thanks to a universal NOS kit and no experience with the laughing gas.

The kid turns hysterical, tells me to leave just in case the cops show up. I offer to get my buddy's tow truck but he declines. I get his name and number to call him today, since he was a good kid and I want to see what happens next.

At least my insurance will cover the windshield at no charge, wonder what the hell it was that hit it.

I was soo loud. I want to take pics, but don't have a digital camera. I don't really care about the windshield. Just glad that's all that happened. What if the engine blew when he was right next to me? That little piece might have gone through the driver's side window.:bang:

You probably got hit by some piece of his universal (LOL) kit.

Did you inspect the paint today in the light, in and around your front end, hood, roof, mirrors, etc for any scratches from whatever hit your car?

MGregski
09-24-2003, 10:25 AM
There's nothing else, just the windshield. His hood was bulged up with a 1 inch gap on the side. I think the whole intake manifold got blown off. I will try to contact him today to look at it.

My windshield is being replaced sometime today.

I was thinking the same but he must have been pretty damn close and the Z would have lost allot of glass as well.

It the intake manifold, or anything in that matter got blown off the engine, it could have struck my car.

Must have been a small piece of metal, a bolt or something.

wow, that blows man. Basically, you just pull the nitrous kit off, and pray the service tech doesn't rat you out when he puts 2 and 2 together after seeing the motor. The warranty and insurance will cover it as long as they dont discover the true cause, *unless engine mods are allowed, in which case he's fine either way*

wow that sucks.

what shot was he running???

i think:

1. He should have broken in the engine alittle more before adding N20.

2. It was not set up right. I know a guy that runs 150 shot twice a week in our 3.0L engine. Granted he's got the 3.5L but I thought Nissans V6s were happy on the bottle.

Talked to the kid last night. He was running a 150 shot. Didn't ask what kit, but he told me that the A/F ratio just dropped to the lean side before the explosion. He did not think it was too bad, so he hidn't let off. N00B.

He told me that the car mysteriously disappeared from his friend's shop the same night:devillook Yah, sure, but if it works out then more power to him.

You know, there's enough info in this thread to get that kid in a lot of trouble.

Where it happened, when it happened, make of car, etc.

Probably not a good idea to post specific road and town names in the Kill Stories section, with just about every state in the union coming down hard on street racing, and with more and more cops and insurance investigators learning how to type a few simple letters, like www.google.com.

The whole thread will be up in the search engines in about two weeks max.

nos is not bad news if used right... if the manifold cracked it would not blow up the engine... or send stuff flying across your windshiled. cause the hood would block that. i dunno maybe im wrong... whatever

yeah sucks for him, but insurance fraud is not the answer, he should knowbetter than to be running nitrous on such a new car, and shouldve considered possible consequences before doing that to his car... not a fan of nitrous, quick and cheap mods with lots of power kind of scare me off, this story does nothing more than reaffirm that fear

no wonder it blew up. Correct me if i'm wrong ,but you said he used 150shot of nos. No wonder the thing blew off. The max they use on new cars are like 50 shot , 75shot tops and it's for under 10secs of holding the button. If he wanted to run really fast he should of saved more money and got a faster car or better mods. Oh well we all learn from our mistakes.

wow that sucks for him.

Question.
You said that your winshield was broken spiderweb, but was there a whole or any evidence of something hitting it. I am sure it would not be hard to miss.
My guess is that there is no evidence of it being striked by somthing. And that it was some sort of shock wave from the explosion that broke it. The Z was head of you, so the full force of the wave hit the shield. It flexed and broke.

Please give us any updates as you hear it.
