View Full Version : Installing Racing Seats....
dorikin_86 09-22-2003, 03:54 AM Ok so i've installed my racing seats in my car....I somehow to want to retain my stock seatbelt but the stock seatbelt buckle is attached to the seat with this weird bracket and this metal wire...
How do you guyz attach the stock seatbelt bucklet to ur new brackets?
Thanks a lot guys!
John
vjlax18 09-22-2003, 08:29 AM Get an inboard "female" buckle from the E30 series.
dorikin_86 09-22-2003, 02:08 PM where can i get such a thing?

stjobs 10-05-2003, 12:27 AM What ended up happening with this?
dorikin_86 10-05-2003, 01:07 AM Bought my seat =)
haven't put it in yet
stjobs 10-05-2003, 01:18 AM Glad to hear you have the seat, at least...
I'm currently going through installation of Sparco Sprints myself. Quite an ordeal...

I can identify with you buddy. My seat install was long and arduous. It was a sight to see actually. Just keep truckin' and you'll do fine. I used multiple combinations on the brackets, cut my finger like no other, and spent roughly 12 hours (not consecutive) putting the damn seats in. But fuck, it was worth every second of my time. Good luck with the install and don't hesitate to PM me if you need assistance. I can surely help you out.
Regards,
Paolo

I already got a nice crescent shaped cut from the seat rail, LOL. It already closed up. I've put the first seat in but now have to take it out, because the bracket's 4th hole doesn't fit if the other 3 are bolted down... in order to access the other 3 I have to take the entire seat off. Talk about undoing the work previously done... At this point I do have all the tools and hardware, and I know it fits (barely). Now I just have to finish the job.
dorikin_86 10-05-2003, 01:38 PM yup...seats are a bitch that's for sure...
I just got so frustrated I didn't even put the seatbelt buckle in there....just gonan use my harnesses....oh and that little wire attaching the bucklet to the seat....i just cut it...didnt even tried to take it off...
GOODLUCK..hopefully everything went fine for you
stjobs 10-05-2003, 03:04 PM Driver's side is finished, it wasn't that bad after a night's sleep and some patience. Took about 3.5 hours of time stretched over a day (not counting 2 trips to the parts store, etc).
dorikin_86 10-06-2003, 02:48 AM oh my....do you have ppl helping you by ur side? it took me a good 2 hours with 2 ppl helping me do things...
megatron 10-06-2003, 04:28 AM you can retain the stock belt e36 receivers, self tensioners and all.
in race trim, i run sparco pro2ks on both sides. i have them mounted on brackets i got from speedware motorsports. their bracket has a tab where the stock receiver can bolt into.
swapping the seats takes about an hour for both sides working quickly.
Out of curiosity, what is taking you guys so long to put seats in. I have Sparco Evo 2s with sparco side mounts and custom sliders and I can put each seat in in 20 minutes. The four holes are not 100% perfect when I set it all in. But as I bolt it to the floor I am able to shift the bracket to fit all the 4 floor bolts in place and then tighten them all down. Its not that difficult.
dorikin_86 10-06-2003, 01:25 PM Mine was because of the shitty recaro slider....had to take it on/off because i keep putting the wrong stuff in the wrong direction....plus the side mount was a bitch to do since there isn't much clearance between teh center console and the seat
megatron 10-07-2003, 03:24 AM i have to transfer brackets, as i share the p2ks between cars (the other being a 951). takes an extra 10min/per.
stjobs 10-07-2003, 10:57 PM Tye,
It will probably take me much less time now that I have done one. I had to swap the buckle and stock belt as well, since it was the first seat I did. Also, with my brackets I can't just leave the seat bolted to the bracket - I have to take it off to reach the 4th bolt on the bracket.
Jim O. 10-08-2003, 03:07 AM Just FYI - if you have the stock E36 belt receiver, and it's one with the spring tensioner not the pyrotechnic tensioner, you can cut open the unit and take out just the receiver part. It's a piece that's just like the E30 seat belt receiver, but it has the wiring and connector for the SRS system. So, you can plug it in, and as long as you have the passenger seat occupancy sensor and the rest of the sensors hooked up, you won't get an SRS light.
Jim
stjobs 10-08-2003, 03:11 AM How do you tell whether it's spring or pyro? I have a feeling mine is the pyrotechnic one.
Jim O. 10-08-2003, 03:40 AM According to the ETK, the tensioners from 3/97 on are the pyrotechnic ones. From 9/93-3/97, there's a different part number for the tensioners, but the information doesn't say whether it's a spring or not. Since it doesn't say that they're pyrotechnic, and since the ones on my 96 were springs, I'd guess that all the ones from 9/93-3/97 are springs...
BTW, the early ones have the following part numbers:
72 11 8 167 711 Left
72 11 8 167 712 Right
And the newer pyrotechnic ones are:
72 11 8 221 013 Left
72 11 8 221 014 Right
But, like anything else, YMMV. Do this at your own risk. When I did this, it was fairly clear to me that the tensioners were spring-loaded. If you can't make that determination, then don't even try to do this...
Jim
stjobs 10-08-2003, 03:50 AM Yeah, mine is pyrotechnic. 4/97 production date :) I got mine bolted to the bracket without disassembling it, though, so there's no need to proceed from that angle. I was just wondering about the difference.
Mine has the buckle, the rubber-booted cable attaching it to the base, then a gas cylinder extending from the base at an angle...
dorikin_86 10-08-2003, 12:49 PM It just sounds so much easier to get the E30 receiver adn bolt it in....I ordered a recaro srd and I plan on doing just that...
anybody know how the srd attaches to the slider? it has no sidemount so...i was wondering where it goes...
BMWm20b25 10-10-2003, 11:29 AM i just installed recaro srd's in my e30 and it was pretty straight forward. got thr brackets and used the stock sliders. recaro's instruction is easy to follow. took me less than 2 hours for both front seats.
srd's are so nice and very comfortable.:12:
anyone selling black e30 m3 rear seats?
mikeinsanmarcos 10-16-2003, 11:10 AM Anyone have the part number for this E30 Receiver?
Thanks,
mike
dorikin_86 10-16-2003, 02:12 PM scroll up =)
dorikin_86 10-16-2003, 02:21 PM btw...how much did you guyz pay for the E30 seatbelt buckle?
my dealer wants 80 bucks! damn
mikeinsanmarcos 10-16-2003, 04:16 PM Hmmm.. I dont see it? I see part numbers for R/L E36 receivers (both spring and pyro) but no E30 part number....
Anyone?
mikeinsanmarcos 10-20-2003, 03:59 PM Ok, I found out the part number... For the E30 seat belt recepticle, you need part number 72111941409 which is $39 from my local dealer.
I am facing some of the issues installing Corbeau seats in my '97 328is as well. The E30 seat belt receptacle sounds like a great alternative to the OEM units. Any suggestions on where I can get a resistor to plug into the all the wires that go into the OEM seats so that I can defeat the airbag light?
Thanks
Shrish
dorikin_86 12-07-2003, 03:08 PM Search teh archives....i've seen someone post somwhere...
u'll need to go buy a resistor from radioshack or something

How does the E30 receiver make things easier? Is it a more generic bracket?
Chris
dorikin_86 12-08-2003, 04:23 AM e30 doens't have that gas reservoir thing....
essejM3 12-08-2003, 04:27 PM I put my seats in this weekend, how did you wire the plug off the E30 receivers? The plugs don't match up to any of the existing harnesses.
vjlax18 12-08-2003, 04:29 PM You can use your stock receiver's Jesse.
1995red318i 08-08-2004, 03:17 AM i just got an a4 seat w/brackets for my 318.
i am looking through threads looking for the best way to install it.
this e30 buckle thing sounds interesting, but i have also heard about using the center seat buckle from the rear seat.
what would you guys prefer to use? the e30 buckle or the rear seat center buckle?
or does it matter?
also, i haven't taken out a seat before. the 4 bolts in the bracket don't seem to be a problem, but how do you remove and reinstall the the buckles onto the brackets, and how do you take off and reinstall the belt tensioner?
sorry if these are simple questions, but i just want to know what to do. thanks.
megatron 08-08-2004, 07:19 AM WHY WHY WHY! Guys, DAMMIT stop the misinformation! Use the stock receptacle!
E30 this and that... oh my god!

1995red318i 08-08-2004, 12:18 PM ah...the decepatakon pulls through:)
so you fit the stock front seat buckle in there huh? from what i have been told and read its a tight fit, so the other buckles were better?:dunno:
i am not sure which is why i am asking...maybe ill try the front buckle first.
btw, what seat is that with?
euro4life 08-08-2004, 12:43 PM btw, what seat is that with?
in race trim, i run sparco pro2ks on both sides. i have them mounted on brackets i got from speedware motorsports. their bracket has a tab where the stock receiver can bolt into.
.
TXBDan 02-01-2006, 07:22 PM i'm running corbeau seats and brackets and the stock E36 buckles are working ok. they mount to the bracket fine and the seats/brackets mount in the car fine. the passenger's is perfect, but the drivers is a little tight against the tunnerl and doesnt slide very well.. so i'm considering the E30 buckles.
jsut to be clear, the E30 buckle has the connectors for the airbag lights etc on it? so i can plug it into the factory wiring under the seat? no warning lights?
what about the stock rear center? i dont think that has any wiring does it?
whats the resistor trick?
ToneCapone 02-02-2006, 12:07 AM From what I've come across, some E30 receptors have wiring, some dont. The ones with the wiring are not "plug and play" to the E36 connector.
Center rear seat receptacle does not have any wiring.
I haven't seen resistor specs for seat belt tensionsers on this site, only a resistor for the drvr side airbag and psgr side occupancy sensor.
If anyone knows what build dates need seat belt tensioners or resistors to keep from throwing a SRS light, I'd greatly appreciate it.
