View Full Version : DASC'd Z3 vs S2000 on the highway

I'm on my way home from an autox and I spot a silver S2000 about a 1/4 mile ahead of me in the far right lane. I'm in the left lane and make my way up to him to check out his car. He spots me looking at his car so I smiled and downshifted to 4th, I didn't do anything right away but as soon as some cars moved over I hit it.

He seemed to follow right away but then never pulled on me. This seemed crazy in my mind because even though I'm SC'd I think he should still be faster. I slow down and move into the third lane and when he catches up I finally notice what was holding him back.......he seemed to have a nervous/anxious gf in the passenger seat ;)

We're now coasting around 70 and I hit it again but this time he doesn't even attempt to follow. I took it up to around 100 but then slowed waaaay down hoping he'd catch up so maybe we could have a run at it. Sure enough he catches up, this time in the left lane, we make eye contact and he guns it from about 75 woohooo he got permission to drive :D I downshifted to 4th and pulled him in until I had to shift to 5th (around 105 I think). From there we were dead even till about 115 or so where we both let off.

Before he took his exit he waved and gave me the thumbs up. I waved back and continued on my way home w/ a huge smile. I still can't believe I kept up! Must've been my carbon fiber Roundels that made the difference;)

That is why I thought I'd be left waaaaay behind. Maybe he just wasn't in the correct gear but it did look like he shifted once on the way up to 115.

I wouldn't call it a Kill, I hung with him.......never had enough juice to pass him though :)

How much HP/TQ did you gain from your S/C kit?

Nice run with the S2000. :buttrock

Chris

My Z3 has the 1.9l (138 hp @ the crank when stock). Many w/ similar mods have seen around 185+ rwhp, but I still haven't gotten my baby on a dyno yet.

I know two people w/ 3.0l Z3's and I've driven both. Both have WAY more torque than me down low, but above 4k the performance feels very similar. Hopefully I'll get to a dyno soon so I'll have some real numbers to post :)

Yeah, I was wondering how the 1.9L would respond to boost. Pretty well, I guess, since 185 whp is roughly 50% more hp at the crank. Add some nitrous too!!! :buttrock

Nice run, Joe!!! The DASC is a positive displacement type of blower, too, not a centrifugal like my Vortech, so the characteristics differ slightly.

Way to go, Joe! :buttrock

?Porque turbo no?

I think there is at least 1 guy who has a turbo'd M44 that is an M3 killer. But it took lots of time and lots ofmoney. I believe the Mosselman turbo tops out around 185 crank hp, and less torque than the DASC.

I like the instant power that I get from the DASC, it isn't peaky at all and just feels like a bigger motor. Sure you could get a turbo to kick my ass, but how much would it cost, and would it be as good for autox as well?

Thats my question, Hp's mustang kits are running 3950, 5950 for the new stangs...most of the kits are in that range...were doing an m20 kit on mine(323) but I cant see the 4 cylinder being too much. (average power rear wheel increase has been 200 to 240%!)

Yeah, I think the DASC can be had for around $3K, versus $8-10K for a turbo....? :dunno

3 grand is really cheap, do they make one for the 2.5(new)

SilverStreak
09-22-2003, 12:09 PM
No, the DASC is only for the 1.9 motor, the 2.5 can make use of the Vortech, though, like in my car, but it's a more costly kit...

My guess is 7 to 11K?

$5K on the low end in you're handy and get a deal, $9K if you get the aftercooler or water injection and have a shop perform the install...

Im stuck with my DASC installation, need a different elbow thingy, but in two weeks, watch out. Im also eventually going to get cams (I heard they make em) a 6 speed m3 tranny, and a 4.1 rear. Also Nick's Stage 2. Oh, and some stickers
