Matt,

I know you Auto-X your 7er alot and I was wondering how to find out about classifications. I'm planning on driving to the O'Fest in Austin, TX and I registered for the Auto-X. I was put in class 7A and never having done an Auto-X I wonder what that means. :dunno
Is 7A a standard SCCA classification or is it solely relative to the event I have entered? :dunno

Any help or guidance appreciated.

Thanks,

Thanks,
That was REALLY helpful.

Sorry for stealing bandwidth.
I posted it here because perhaps someone other than Matt could comment as well.
I guess I should place myself in timeout, Huh?

Matt Segal left the board a little while ago... haven't seen him since.

In regards to your class rank... It depends. I've been to a few auto-x and I believe they make up ranking for each event. I've never had a specific SCCA ranking before... but then again, the cars I auto-x were fairly stock.

I'll move this to track/auto-x to help you out.

Simeon,
A STOCK 740i/il would be classed in G-Stock. Given your modifications, you would be in (at least) G-Street Prepared (modifications including, intake, exhaust, suspension, bigger wheels/rubber, etc.) I don't know what they will think of the 6-speed though....:D

I ran my 750il a few weeks ago and was classed in F-Stock (because of the M73). Considering the size of the car, the tires (chunked the original Michelins at the end of the day), and the open diff, the car did quite well. I was able to be competitve with the times of some sportier cars. My only complaint was the electronic throttle, even with the sport map on, was very slow to react.

It proved to be quite the handful on course, but loads of fun nonetheless.

If you have any more questions, let me know.

Here's a pic for your enjoyment.

Simeon -

BMW CCA does not use the SCCA classification system - they use their own. In fact, last time I checked, each BMW CCA chapter had their own classification system, because there wasn't a standard, club-wide national system. Some chapters use the points based system that was originally developed by the Golden Gate Chapter, or some variation of it. Others have fewer classes, mainly distinguishing between stock and modified, and cars on R-tires vs. street tires.

Anyway, the short answer is that it's probably a classification that's either specific to the 2003 O'Fest, or has some meaning to the host chapter. Your best bet is to contact the Lone Star Chapter, and see if they can answer your questions.

Different chapters have different classification structures, and out here Matt's car was in D class (modified 6-8-12 cylinder cars).

Matt hasn't posted to the board in a while and hasn't been seen at an autocross since he got beat by this non-BMW CCA visitor:

The class book says that all 6-cylinder 7-series cars are supposed to be in HS. This particular event, I didn't know what to class the E38 in, so the person who compiled the official results reclassed the car in F-Stock. Given the classification, I would assume all 8 and 12-cylinder cars would be in G and F respectively. I really didn't care much about the indexing because we ran the car only because our racecar's clutch had air in the system. And the car was never going to be competitive especially on its original tires, enormous size, and its even more enormous weight (~5000 lb with security glass).

That said, the 7 isn't suited for autocrossing, it is just too damn big. I think it would fair much better open-tracking where size and weight isn't so much of a factor.

Then...the more recent autocross at Irwindale coming up on October 25th has been canceled, and moved to November 16th supposedly...so let me know what's going on and I'll show up with the crappy Michelins my dad put on as compared to the sweet Pirellis I used to have :)

Randy, btw...have any other 7s attended the autocrosses? I know a few of the SoCal7s mentioned it but I didn't follow up to see if they actually did...n? ~Matt Segal

Matt, i posted a picture of a big dumptruck on an autocross course as the guy who beat you (as a joke) but within an hour or so the link apparently went bad and it stopped showing up so you probably didn't see it.

Considering the size of your sled and the fact that you're new and on all-season tires the instructors were very impressed with your performance. You have natural driving talent and we'd like to see you get some sort of 3 series and further develop your talent.

So far i don't think the L.A. Chapter has confirmed the next autocross date - there has been a management change at Irwindale Speedway and we're kinda caught in the middle right now. Keep checking back . . .

How about looking for a new location(preferably in Van Nuys :D)? I think there might be some other suitable parking lots somewhere out there :dunno ?

Oh trust me, there isn't a large parking lot or airport in the greater Los Angeles area that we haven't approached as a possible autocross site. It's extremely hard to get a property owner to rent his lot out to a club for autocrossing on, and the ones who would allow it want to charge way too much per day. We just can't pay $3,000 to $5,000 to rent a lot for one day (price ranges we've been quoted).

As for California Speedway, they want $5,000 per day and so far haven't budged on the price. There is talk of using Calif Speedway for O-Fest, but not for regular club autocrosses.

Don't forget to get the proper licensing and registrations for the 7.
