View Full Version : Softball Game: Equipment. Flash Some Leather... Or Aluminum.
Ron17 09-16-2003, 10:36 AM In addition to grills, we will obviously need enough equipment to facillitate playing the actual softball game. What we need is three things:
1) Balls
2) Bats
3) Gloves
#1 - I have enough softballs to play a game a day for 25 years straight. This is not a problem. No one has to worry about this.
#2 - I have one personal bat and I can get two or three more easily. However, if you have a softball bat or access to one, please do bring it.
#3 - I have my own glove, plus an extra. Again, if you have a glove or gloves, or have access to them, please bring all you can. We can share gloves, but we're gonna need AT LEAST 10.
So, please post and list what equipment you can provide. Me?
I will bring softballs, 1-3 bats and two gloves.
rwindleyme02 09-16-2003, 11:13 AM I can bring a glove.
Total:
Balls = Lots
Bats: 1-3
Gloves: 3
bcart1991 09-16-2003, 11:17 AM I'm bringin my glove - but I'm a lefty - good for any other devil-handed people coming. Later.
Carter
Ron17 09-16-2003, 11:18 AM Ah yes... please specify if your glove is left-handed. That's important to know.
Also, please let us know if your bats are left- or right-handed. :laugh
bcart1991 09-16-2003, 11:20 AM Yeah, my Jr High gym coach kept telling me I was using the wrong bat...

New?
If so, wrap a softball (or something of comparable size) in the pocket of the glove. Form the glove around the ball, then put a large rubberband or three around it to hold it in place. Apply shaving creme to the exterior or the glove. Place in the freezer overnight.
In the morning, remove the glove and brush the shaving creme off. Take the rubberbands off. Remove the ball.
Wiggle the leather back and forth a bit and just kinda work it back and forth, as a glove would open and close.
Pound the ball into the mit over and over.
Smile. You've just speed-broken-in your glove.
punknamedjimmy 09-16-2003, 04:21 PM i'm not sure how many my friend has but i'll ask
Ron17 09-16-2003, 04:24 PM I have a large, bulging sack... with balls in it.
bcart1991 09-16-2003, 04:25 PM You play WAAAAAYYYYYYY too much softball...or is it really a "glove" that you're trying to "break in"??? Hmm...
punknamedjimmy 09-16-2003, 04:35 PM i've heard rumors that aaron uses the mini-bat
zeit00 09-16-2003, 04:37 PM Yea a new one... I will do that... It sounds like a fun evening...;)

Twelve years of baseball, followed by six years of softball. You tend to pick up things along the way.
I'm on three teams a year and play virtually year-round.
zeit00 09-16-2003, 04:39 PM I am assuming that the shaving cream will soften the leather and freezing it will kind of mold it to the shape of whatever is in the glove???

I don't know why you put it in the freezer, but that's what you do. The shaving creme *DOES* soften the leather.
punknamedjimmy 09-16-2003, 07:29 PM is their a difference between a baseball bat and a softball bat?
to the extent that a person like me would care/notice?

Yes. They are subtle, but noticeable if you pay attention.
Baseball bats are more end-loaded. The barrel of the bat is thicker out at the end.
A softball bat, OTOH, is more like a bottle, in that it gets thicker farther down the handle, then stays the same thickness along the length.
punknamedjimmy 09-16-2003, 09:18 PM right.... okay.... uhm.... right.
my friend has 2-3 baseball gloves and bats but i'll have to go check how many... so should i bring them or not?
BimmerDawg 09-16-2003, 10:36 PM I have nothing, save for a desire to kick the Barrett Parkway Bombers' ass! :pityfool:
SilverBlur 09-16-2003, 11:01 PM This is Mark using my wife's account. will bring 1 LH and 1 RH glove. Given the size of Priscilla and I, these are not your biggest gloves out there. But they will be available for use.
RH 5
LH 2

Bring any and all equipment that you can muster. It's better to have too much equipment than not enough.
count_schemula 09-17-2003, 03:13 PM Baseball bats are end loaded as Ron said. Basically, you can knock the crap out of a softball with a baseball bat. The end around whip action is greater.
I used to have a killer Carl Yazstremski wood bat. Thin handle, fat end. The dude who's house was in "left field" went through several windows!
Ron17 09-30-2003, 04:44 PM So... we need more gloves. I think I'll have three bats, which should suit us. Feel free to bring more, though.
Ask your friends and borrow stuff. I'll get some extra gloves from my team tonight, but we need others to help out.
We need to have enough equipment!
punknamedjimmy 09-30-2003, 05:23 PM doesn't look like i'm going to have anything to bring...
SilverBlur 09-30-2003, 09:41 PM :redspot

Ron17 10-02-2003, 11:35 AM I have three bats of varying sizes and weights. They should sufficiently cover the spectrum of what people will desire.

Beg. Borrow. Steal.
By any means necessary...
Or, just go buy a glove. They can be had for cheap.
