View Full Version : fitness club...
count_schemula 09-09-2003, 06:09 PM Anyone know anything about fitness clubs in the ATL? The web is useless in this case.
Being a fatass driver of a BMW here in the southeast is getting on my nerves.
Plus I just need some more mental energy as I plan some schemes for next year. All this Caroline Rhea has taken it's toll.
I'm gonna look into Lee Haney down by City Hall east. There's an LA Fitness opening near me, but it's got a lot of stuff I'm not gonna use. I just need some way to get my heart rate up and then some weights to lift and just enough personal training to prevent injury as I start out.
My bicycle and 2 dumbells are not cuttin' it. Well, I don't ride my bike much, so... that could be part of the problem right there.
punknamedjimmy 09-09-2003, 06:38 PM my little apartment complex has a few weight machines, treadmill, and bike
so i've just been doing a little work down their lately... nothing major.
so basically i can't help you at all.
Ron17 09-09-2003, 07:18 PM Ask Neil. His biceps are as big around as my freakin' neck!
:pityfool:
Theodore 09-09-2003, 07:26 PM Ride your bike, or do what needs to be done to it to make you want to ride it. I just bought a curl bar, 2 10lb. plates, and 2 25lb. plates. My bike = cardio. With the weights, it's not a heavy work out, but I use my stuff for curls, military lift, squats(high reps) and if you go close grip bench, even while laying on the floor, it'll be a good tricep w/o. Push ups for pecs, sit ups for the gut. Total cost is less that $100. Works for me.

they are as big as my waist.
Bremsen 09-09-2003, 09:54 PM If you MTB and want someone to ride with let me know. My bike has been sitting for months.
rwindleyme02 09-10-2003, 12:08 AM How fast is your internet connection Danny? I can send you this workout that you can do with no weights, barbell & bench or dumbell & bench from Men's health. It a big file, that's why I ask.
Sorry, don't know about fitness facilities here.
zeit00 09-10-2003, 02:32 PM Count.. Where are you in Atlanta.. I might have some ideas for you!

He didn't say Midtown, Karl.
Ohhh... nm. You said "ideas." ;)
chisau 09-10-2003, 04:04 PM Good luck in finding a good gym. I can't help you there, but I can give you some free advice. Cut out the beer, sugars, and limit your carb intake. Watch your portions at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try to eat eaqual amounts of protein/carbs (ie. palm size portions of each) Consume ALOT of water.. Stay away from white breads.. Just some pointers. Things that you can do for free are; jogging, jumping rope, push ups, situps(full situps.. None of this sissy crunch stuff!!) Shadow boxing..(if done right, this can really help you work up a good sweat!) Pull ups(if you can find a pull up bar...School playground??) Remember, it is near impossible to spot reduce.. Build muscle in general and reduce your intake will help to reduce unwanted fat. It's actually quite an easy concept. It just takes some work. I personally think that gyms are over-rated to an extent... Once you build up the core, then you can hit the gym HARD.. The more muscle you build, the better you'll feel/ look.. Don't get too caught up with the whole cardio thing. If you look at 90% of all the runners out there, there bodies aren't much to look at plus all the running is horrible on your knees. Hit the weights/calisthenics HARD and you will be impressed...PM if you want a more detailed plan..

count_schemula 09-10-2003, 04:53 PM Thanks all... yeah... I think I'm gonna keep it free. I just recently stayed in some nice hotels and they had some pretty damn nice gyms and those machines will put a nice lil' hurt on you. :D
I have pretty much cut out drugs, sugar and fast food. I have always consumed a lot of water. I've been messing with some dumbells for a while, this week I started reaching for the heavier one more often and it's starting to take hold.
I just think I need to ride my bike, and work some push-ups and pull-ups into the mix. I'm gonna try to avoid sit-ups unless it's just absolutely needed. I'm not trying to get chisled or even hard, just normalized.
The cardio really changes your metabolism, and I've never been much of a runner/jogger. The bike alone should get me the increased mental powers I seek.
I just think I need to up my own intensity level a little bit and I'll be fine. Plus I just took my "gym" money and bought a PS2 and some games, so... screw paying for a gym. :D
I have a nice Cannondale moutain bike with street slicks on it, so I just need to take that thing out more. I re-read my own post and the answer was contained within.
Theodore 09-10-2003, 07:38 PM Might wanna try swimming. Esp. if you can find some friends to do it with. Just horse around, play football in the shallow end, have races, see who can swim the farthest underwater. It is a great workout and lots of resistance to boot. Big bonus is that if you have a lot of fun it doesn't feel like a workout at all. Free weightloss. Plus your car will be faster!
whey protein, lots of water, watch the fat, hit the gym and max out, do cardio every other day (although with school its hard to do). I've been on a pretty strict bulking process right now and I can lift alot more than I started out and i've gained a few pounds. Now is the good time to start if you want to look big and cut by next summer.

Actually I was going to recommend a gay gym here downtown... Its over bi... I mean by... Ansley Mall... But Midtown I am not too sure of.. :D
zeit00 09-11-2003, 10:15 AM If you are trying to lose weight I recommend Atkins.. I have lost 16 pounds already.. But my big drop in weight was when I was close to 230!!! I am now down 50 pounds!
count_schemula 09-11-2003, 10:28 AM I looked into Atkins... they said no caffeine. I said no Atkins.
I was intrigued though by what Atkins had to say about blood sugar levels. Enough so that I totally dropped weed, cookies, candy, etc. Basically, they said "you do bad things" due to blood sugar rises and drops. Caffeine causes you to crave sugar as well.
I'm gonna eat good food and enjoy a cup of coffee, and drink me some alcohol, so, I'm not looking for a strict regimen, but, methinks some bike riding is really the key to getting things in motion.
I'm not "truly fat" but would like to loose about 20 pounds so i can go dancing! Not.

More power to ya man! ;)
Seriously though, biking is good and not too hard on the knees. Pick up the dumbbells too so you can build some muscle to burn fat faster. Good luck!
Flying Dutchman 09-11-2003, 10:49 AM If you are goning to bike outdoors in the Atlanta area find a very safe / quiet route to ride. The drivers here in town are not good (see other thread in SE section for info) and riding can be very hazardous to your health.
Better to be fat and driving than in-shape being rolled over by a Tahoe.
