Ok.... we recently got rid of our Yukon XL, which i loved a lot. It was a 2001, with Onstar nav., 8" sub in hidden enclosure, Audiovox Flip down 6.4" screen from the roof, 18" Avalanche wheels etc.... but we sold it.

My dad asked me last nite, about what I thought about the X5. I've noticed that he's been interested in it for a while. He's gone to the dealership a few times, which when my sales rep saw me he told me about my dad visiting the dealership. First thing that came to my mind was reading Roozy's post (on DTMPower.net) about his X5's engine catching on fire. Then recently another X5's engine caught on fire with 200 miles on the clock. So what did i say, exactly that. I told my dad that i've heard about the problem about the X5's engine catching on fire.... and now i regret saying it.

In general, I love the X5. I think it looks pretty damn nice, the interior is awesome... and after seeing the Blue Hamann X5 at the Wheel Power show... how can i not like it :D

I really regret telling my dad about the X5 engine catching fire... but what do u guys think are the possibilities of that happening? Cuz i feel it kinda slims the chance of us getting it. Im going to do more research on the X5, and im gonna start staying on the X5 boards a lil' more now :)

So i want to hear your guys honest and UNBIASED opinion about the X5. Do u feel the engine catching on fire is a slim possibility, or is it a SAV to stay away from?

Lets here it guys/gals... what are YOUR opinions about the X5 :)

nothing else, just get one or at least test drive one.....make sure it's the 4.4 and the 2002 have the switch fixed....

If you buy a used one.....check and see if they fixed it before you buy it......

Reliability wise, how are they?

Reliablity.....so far my mom has only had problems with the coolant sensor.......which is minor IMO.....

Everything else has been fine

I got to auto-x a 4.4L X5 about a year ago. I loved every minute of it. Damn thing was fast... and it handled good too. Not one tire left the ground. If I have to be that high off the ground, the only thing I will be in is an X5 and if you got some extra cash... go for the X5 HP model with the 4.6L motor.

Did you know... the seating position of the X5 is about 10inches higher than your standard 5 series... BUT the center of gravity of the X5 is only 3 inches higher than a 5 series creating a low center of gravity and car like handling.

When I was at the auto-x they did a demonstration with a

Lexus LX470
Mercedes Benz ML430
and BMW X5

Both Lexus and Mercedes flipped during the emergency lane change test at 30mph...

The BMW did the emergency lane change test at 40 mph and not one tire left the ground and no cones were hit.

THe funniest part was I was talking to a Mercedes SUV owner before the demonstration. When he saw the result of the lane change... his jaw was on the floor. He said he was going to trade it in the day after.

The faulty switches were to blame in those fires. If you go to www.roadfly.com there is a link to go to the recall for this. It is not very major at all and can be fixed at the dealer. I would show him this article and that should explain everything.

So far my aunt's X5 has been performing very well (3.0 with Prem Package). Nothing has gone wrong cept for the faulty fan switch recall. Local BMW dealership called her and made an appointment for the next day once the parts came in.

I say tell your dad to get the 4.4 or 4.6 cause this 3.0 is slow IMO.

Hey guys.... ok, so the fan switch is to blame for the fires that was caused... but BMW finally fixed them?

Does anyone know the production dates of the X5s that had the faulty fan switch fixed?

I have owned mine since Dec 6th, merry X-(5)mas to me, and I love it , I already told you that. I did have some interesting occurences, we will call them, my first month or so but since then again I have been very happy with my purchase, problem FREE. My car is a head turner, you dont see then that often which I really like and with the 4.6 coming out, OMG

Now as too the fires , its not just the X's that are burning, BMW has a problem as a whole not just with the X's soooooooooooo, give the X a break would ya, its got a bad wrap!

With that, the X5 is the first and safest SAV(Sport Activity Vehicle) on the road, it combines the best of two worlds: the ruggedness, power and flexibilty of a sport utility vehicle, with the responsiveness, comfort and quality of a BMW. Very simply, driving the X5 is an experience without compromise and without equal. Thats from the cataloge, hehe

BMW issued SI Bulletin 64 07 01 yesterday to notify dealers that all models that were recently recalled to replace the auxiliary/cooling fan would be recalled again.
Here is some of the pertinent info from the SI Bulletin:

SITUATION
The potential defect involves the engine auxiliary/cooling fan in certain MY 2001 BMW vehicles.
Fan operation, including variable speed, is electronically controlled. It is possible for the electrical circuitry in the fan control unit to overheat and fail, causing the fan to stop operating. If this were to occur, engine overheating and subsequent engine damage could result if vehicle continues to be operated, despite the warning provided by the coolant temperature gauge.
In addition, it is possible in some cases for the failure of the electrical circuitry to cause smoldering. In the extreme case, a fire in the fan control unit, which is mounted in the fan and located in the front of the engine compartment, could occur. This could happen either while the engine is running or after the ignition has been switched off since fan may run for up to 11 minutes after engine shutdown.”

Honestly, I like the X5s but they had so many damn problems right now its not even funny.

I hate to scare X5 owners here but there have been over 8 recalls since the vehicle came out. I think there are 4 now at this time from aux. fan, transmission selector switch, oil hose rubbing on brake line, power steering pump pully loose, etc.

Worse things are the electrical nightmares with corroded connectors.

Small price to pay, I have never purchased a vehicle that did not have its share of problems.

I had a few PROBLEMS when I first got my X, but the last 8 months have been PERFECT, I am very happy X5 owner. :D
