View Full Version : my 8 was totaled today

i was making a left turn and this dude coming directly infront of me hits me from the side. i dont really know how it happened, i didnt see anything. and i would never risk the 8 just to make a fast turn.

all i know is i was in a full turn and then BOOM, it felt like bumper cars and i went heading towards an electric poll, the police and emts said i was lucky because a few more inches and it wouldve came down on me.

i felt safe in the 8, really nobody was going fast but i didnt have any fear at any time of it, one thing that was kind of alarming though was my airbag didnt deploy, i mean lucky for me, because it wasnt needed but all of them in the car that hit me deployed.

very bad day, though luckily nobody was hurt at all.

Glad you were OK. Looks like your 8 gave its life to make sure you were OK. Look at the difference between the damage on your 8 and that of the Toyota. Makes you appreciate how well a BMW is made.

Wow, that sucks! Glad to see you're okay.

Regarding the front airbags, I believe the sensors are set up to only go off in a front impact where the decelerations are high along the longitudinal axis of the car.

Sorry to hear, hopefully the insurance figures out something quick about the car/new car. Glad to hear you are ok.

PS: I'm 99.9% sure the other car is actually a 2009 Accord - that silly Honda got owned.

thanks for all the good thoughts everyone.

you think its salvageable? or should i just start lookong for another?

and yeah, it was a honda accord (it really did get torn up huh), after it happened the guy who was driving came running up yelling "you f___d up my car" many times,

and all i was thinking was dude its a honda........just goto the dealership and get another one when insurance comes through, or what not. withthe 8 i dont have that luxury, its not easy to replace really.

i didnt say this of course, LOL

Sorry to hear about that but glad to hear you're OK.
You can see the difference in crunch zone technology with the damage levels to your BMW and the Honda - but how did the car hit you? was this sort of 3/4qtr front?

tdotbimmer

It might not be worth fixing. Just get another one. Less headaches.

It probably is salvageable, but getting another one would likely be cheaper. Take it an an opportunity to upgrade. Didn't the other driver cause the accident? If so, Why the f*ck is he yelling? I would point out that he drives a Honda and you, an 8 series. :shifty

glad your ok and in tact. Your car is very fixable and sometimes the love of these cars is keeping, fixing, loving again. If you let it go, you might always regret not fixing it. Buy it back from ins. cheap and you can have it fixed in no time. Good luck

glad to hear that you're ok and sorry for the nice car.
But as Koizumi correctly stated: the car can be replaced.

I wouldn't fix it since it'll always remain a car which had a bad crash. In regards to the air bags: You know that they have an expiration date? Normally airbags are supposed to be replaced after 10 years and I bet no one does it. I would have to replace 6 of them in my wife's E39 which is going to cost more than what the car is worth. I told her to just not crash it and she promised to follow my advice :D

glad all is well. think of it this way. you're going to go from being cylindrically challenged to owning a V12. Put some Wokke V2 chips in and I'll bet you'll be thru the next intersection before that guy gets there to hit you! Start shopping, I would not even entertain fixing that type of diagonal hit to the front.

We haven't met Harvard, but, along with Koizumi and the others here, I'm glad your uninjured. I'm liking the idea of resurrection from the ashes, 8's are few in number, I think it's worth the effort if you can do it.

I'll add my well wishes to you and yours. It's a toss up really about fixing or not. I'm all about keeping these on the road, etc., but I also know my mentality of 'it's just not the same anymore' after it's fixed. The cost will be high and ins. will no doubt total the car in a heartbeat. It's certainly worth buying back and would be a good project for someone. Best of luck to you whichever way you go.

The other guy yelling? You may have turned left in front of him, but it looks like he was really moving to toss the heavy 8er onto the lawn over the curb like that. Looks residential. What is the speed limit over there?

I know it's hard to get a handle on what happened after the shock of being tossed like that. Don't say anything until you get it straightened out in your own head.

Glad you are ok.

+3

It takes some effort, but it saves another from the grip of those who would rip her apart just because it is cheap to do.

I would be really surprised if the frame is straight after that hit. If you have friends in the right line of business you might get a good deal on straightening it, but its an awful lot of work.

But then again, one of my buddies in michigan welded a rear clip onto his escort (caged and track prepped but also daily driver) and straightened the frame after he got hit. It helped that that was actually what he did for a living though :)

Not much of a frame - unibody here. I have seen worse wrecks where everything was still inline. Looks like alot of "cosmetic" stuff.
But, on the other hand it would be a greta exceuse to go for a V12...

First, I am glad to know that you made out ok and didn't get seriously injured or killed. Now, the irony of the different posts on fixing it, it dying to save your life and Wokke's comment that it will always be flagged as a car that had a serious accident. Irony being that YESTERDAY, I resurrected the deal to buy the 95 840 I had posted about last month, which subsequently failed the leakdown. In it for short money, and am in need of a solid 4.0. So, in your decision making process know that you could transplant her heart and lungs to a fellow enthusiest with three sixers and an eight. and part of her would live on for many more years. But of course, you do what is best for you, just letting you know my interest if you decide to part with her.

it doesn't look that bad of a crash. it should be repairable. although it does look like you knocked 4 cylinders out of the car.

Oh no, it's not you having a problem - it is BMW. No more unique design and therefore easily mixed up with any kind of far east production cars. For me personally BMW died (designwise) in the last century.
Design and quality are by no means what they used to be.

it doesn't look that bad of a crash. it should be repairable. although it does look like you knocked 4 cylinders out of the car.The front end unibody has been "tweaked" a little too much to straighten. To cut the front and splice it would be foolish. I didn't say it couldn't be fixed, I said it would be unwise and not worth the effort or expense. Especially in this market. I would let the insurance co take it, keep very close track of where it goes, and buy it back from the breaker. If you try to seem too aggressive to want it to the insurance co, it will cost you much more $$. If you do get it back, buy a car cheap that needs what is good on your wreck. If you don't get it back, ins will have paid you enough for a good 850 anyway!

i think ive decided to buy an 850ci and try to buy back the 840 and try and get that repaired in the future.

i dont know, well see. im still waiting on the insurance to get back to me and then if they say its a loss im taking the first flight to go test drive this 95 850ci. but also does anyone here know any 850ci's for sale that are black/black

the speed limit on the road is 25 mph. he was going faster than that, from what i can remember. as i said i didnt even see him but it felt faster than that. no way the 8 would be pushed that far only going 25 mph.
