Have a 2001 X5 showing Service Engine Soon - code reader indicates there are no codes. Need to have car inspected and pretty sure they wont pass the inspection if there is a SES light.
Any ideas on clearing the SES light?
Thanks..

Killcrap...the x5 is a 4.4 with 60k on it. We never have used it to tow, it is basically my daily driver. When this first began, we read the codes and came up with code 0709 or Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Intermittent...since we cannot figure out where to have our cars serviced...(anyone with a good indy near 15012-let me know)trying to avoid the dealership if possible...we have not had the sensor fixed...so the SES light was intermittent with this code and after a while the SES light has just stayed on and no longer generates a code of any sort...The car drives fine...It rarely goes into Transmission Failsafe Mode, and that ONLY happens on start up or shut down...NEVER while driving...if I turn the car off and then back on again it seems to reset itself and drives fine...no slipping, no hesitation, no symptoms just that pesky light...Any thoughts would be appreciated...

I had some weird, intermittent stuff going on with my X5 (susp inop, service engine, etc.) until I replaced a weak battery [note that the battery seemed OK to me, but did not pass the dealer diagnostic]. Although everything still worked fine, the weak battery was intermittently allowing wild signals (or no signals) to go to the OBC. I have not had a recurrence since replacing the battery 7 months ago :D
