it is the diode issue. search for DIY on how to repair or buy a replacement like i did. there is a guy on ebay that will repair the unit for 39.99 plus shipping he is Southern Cali

I just reflowed the solder for the small square and large round diodes. No problems since, though I suspect I will be dealing with the blower resistor next and there is no equally cheap fix for that.

I reflowed the solder for the small rectangular .47 microfarad cap, and that worked for a pretty long time. After like a year or so, the climate control unit started acting up again, so I removed and replaced the capacitor and things have been working great for around two years or so.

Yeah you'll find a good DIY if you do a search. They suggest replacing the capacitor, but I've found that to be unnecessary. Lucky me, I've got to do this 4 times on 3 E36's! YAY! I'm really good at it now :) You need to pull the unit completely apart to get at the board. Once you're in there you need to clean off the protective coating (so you don't contaminate the solder) then re-solder the two leads.

I first did it on my wife's 328ic about 4 years ago and recently had to go back in there to clean it up. I hope this time it lasts more than 4 years.
