View Full Version : Help Needed: How to drive manual (not a noob but bad driver) in NYC
Georgere 05-24-2009, 10:02 PM Before purchasing the car, I took a few professional lessons. The last thing my teacher told me was that i was ready to buy and drive a manual car. he also told the rev matching thing should become natural pretty soon. well, i own the car for a while now and still jerk it pretty often.... when the engine is at op temps it seems i shift better but still jerk sometimes and when its cold i m terrible - even my wife makes fun of my technique....
i think my downshifting is better than when i go up the gears especially from 1st to 2nd....
anyway, looking for help. if you are willing to help out a fella i would highly appreciate that (lunch/beer/whatever reasonable u ask). also open to professional help offers...
i m located in Brooklyn (NYC) available 7 days a week basically (temporarely unemployed - sucky economy)...
send me a PM/email
thanks in advance,
george
sushimi 05-25-2009, 12:11 AM Hey, if you feel like coming to Edison NJ this week I'll try to help you out.
az3579 05-25-2009, 01:06 AM Umm, if you have an '06, then that's probably why you can't drive your car smoothly. Take that darned Clutch Delay Valve out and you'll have an infinitely easier time shifting.
But, I'm willing to help you out. I can drive down there, all I ask for is gas and tolls... does tomorrow sound good?

Replied.
I'm helping out my friend with the same deal today, so I figure I might as well offer if I'm 'in the mode'. :)
Georgere 05-25-2009, 06:29 PM thanks guys, what a community. Unfortunately, i just had an accident today will be off the road for a few days (drowsy medication).
I will reach out/update you once my doc says it's safe. hope some of you will still be avail. nevertheless, many thanks to all who relied......
turbospool 05-25-2009, 08:36 PM im free often... um i think with these newer drive by wire cars timing is morethe key with smoothness. practice letting the clutch out a 1/4 inch prior to giving gas and it should work out smoother
Atlas rsv4 05-25-2009, 10:03 PM Wow, sorry to hear that. Hope everyone's ok!

hurrican5547 05-25-2009, 10:35 PM it's nice to see how willing to help everyone in the area is...
Sam Son 05-25-2009, 10:38 PM the CDV does make certain actions tricky but driving a car with a clutch delay valve will certainly make it seem like you cant drive a stick...
but if you really cant infact drive the car well as you can already see there are tons of guys in the area who are willing to help out and if you need someone to walk you through rev matching and heel and toe...thats not a problem;)
kell13y 05-27-2009, 10:05 AM I work in NYC and am staying with friends in Brooklyn right now so I will gladly help you out if you still have issues later. I am here all summer =)
Dubbedown 05-27-2009, 10:41 AM only way to learn is to take on the street and deal with the inevitable stalling, people honking at you, giving u the finger, and having your car roll back on a hill while u sh*t bricks. have enough of those experiences and it'll come natural.
the cdv does make the car feel jerky but shouldn't prevent u from driving manual. if anything, it'll just force you to be more careful of your shifts, letting the clutch go slower for more seamless shifts.
does your 06 come with the brake assist? that definitely helps for first time manual drivers.
Georgere 05-27-2009, 01:13 PM yep, when on a hill and release the brake, the car stays still for about 2 sec which enough to take off

try not to become too dependent on that. i remember last winter i was on a very steep hill that was covered in light snow. i had my blizzaks on and i remember the car rolling back - was not used to it. felt like first time i drove. i had become so used to the brake assist.
czynot 05-27-2009, 09:00 PM sorry to hear about your car. I am in brooklyn bensonhurst. if you need few lessons, I can help. pm me.

Amen to that
idriveastick 06-10-2009, 12:48 PM You still need help? My 4 year old brother with a broken right arm will teach ya.
Nah, in all seriousness, just drive. Don't think about shifting or anything. Just think about "I have to get from here to there" and it will be natural. If you don't sike yourself out and just let it flow, you'll be fine. I remember my father tried teaching me in his Rubicon. I would stall every 5 seconds because I didn't want to stall it and have him get pissy.
Then, after 3 or 4 years of not touching a stick shift, I bought a 1997 318i. Granted, the less HP = less trouble, but I said F it and just drove. If you think too hard, you'll end up stalling and jerking. If you just go with the flow, you'll be fine.
Brooklyn/NYC is a PERFECT place to learn too. A lot of stop and go means a lot of practice taking off. Good luck man.
