View Full Version : Group Buy: DInan CAI's must go

Hi:
A certified Dinan dealer is trying to reduce their stock of all e36 Dinan CAI's and they have expressed interest in my attempts at arranging a group buy. The intakes they have in stock are for the 325, 328, as well as M3. I believe the 325's are carbon fiber while the others are the newer aluminum kind with black finish.

I'd like to see how many people are interested so I can get a better idea of the price they will be willing to offer us. I'm sure getting 20 people together would be no problem, but what price would you guys like to see? I know there is not a high profit margin on Dinan products so please let me know

Thanks
David

"I know there is not a high profit margin on Dinan products..."

Given that Dinan stuff is the most expensive around that statement cannot be true.

FYI: Dinan no longer makes Carbon Fiber versions of their E36 intakes so you will probably be getting regular anodized black aluminum intakes...

I was referring to the profit margin for the retailers....I'm sure Dinan sells them pretty high for wholesale as well, not just to us consumers

kaotik:
They are getting rid of older stock - they still have some carbon fiber intakes although dinan does not make them anymore

You can get the Dinan CAI to fit with euro ellipsoids, but the fit is tight.

I currently have the Dinan CAI and ellipsoids.

You need to first cut a part of the back of the ellipsoid. (It is not a neccessary piece)

Secondly you need to position the CAI back further then the specified location. (need to move the holding bracket back)

And then try to fit in the CAI.

It is a PITA to install the Dinan CAI w/ ellipsoids. Even after you do the following things it is still very tight between the ellipsoid and the intake.

I got it to work, and there is no rubbing. Many others have also done this, run a search for how to do it.

I would not recommend buying the Dinan CAI if you have ellipsoids. It is just not worth the time and difficulty in installing.
Especially if the dinan CAI is not going to be the carbon fiber one!

Go with Jim Conforti CAI

UPDATE:
Just got off the phone with the owner of the Dinan dealer (who is a cool ass dude btw) and he is very willing to hook it up. He said that he gets all the intakes for 299 wholesale and believes that he can sel them to us for "10-20% above the wholesale price." I quote him as saying we can get them for cheap but most likely "no less than $325." My impression from him is that they will be priced somewhere between 325-350$

So please if anyone is still seriously interested at this price let me know so i can put a final fax together which I will send out sometime this weekend. He will run it by the boss and get back to me Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. So the more people the better the savings.

Thanks
David

PS: GROUP BUY IS NOT LIMITED TO E36, they stock other models as well!!

Just so you nkow, the retail price for the Dinan CAI is $399. I nkow of at least one BMW dealership, and there are probably others, that gives 15% off of Dinan products every day of the week to BMWCCA members. That discount yields a price of $339. You should make sure that you're going to get a deal that beats that one.

I was unaware of the BMW CCA discount, but hopefully it will be less if not about the same. I've been wanting to join that but never got around to it.
I'm wondering: is there a limit to the amount of intakes one member can buy?

JR:
No, you don't need to reply again, just wondering if others wanted to join in now that I have a better odea of the price

I just know that some BMW dealerships offer that type of discount. The one I know about is United BMW in the Atlanta area. Once you belong to BMWCCA, it always makes sense to ask your local dealer if they offer some type of discount,

Iam still interested but honestly not willing to pay that close to regular retail for an item that is no longer produced by dinan (carbon).

Let me know when the price drops to $299.

the way i see it, the carbon fiber version of the intake is much more of a coveted item and is treated as a rare and out of print product instead of an inferior product in which is just aluminum. If you are just interested in a black aluminum intake, then go with BenFer, they are much cheaper and you get basically the same thing. But if you want the CF version, which I'm sure is what everyone here wants, then it would only make sense that it is actually worth MORE than the current Dinan intake...

if it's the carbon version, maybe I'll be in this group buy, but the price has to go down

LmtdSlip

I wouldn't pay more for a product that has been discontinued by the manufacturer. CF vs. Alum is only an aesthetic thing so I wouldnt pay a premium for an old product that offers no real world performance advantage. LIke I said I am interested but at a lower price.

Please understand I am not trying to belittle anyones effort to make $$ or get a good discount. This is just where I am on discounts for old, discontinued products.

But he's gonna cut us a better deal, I think he's just gonna order whatever we want then just directly pass the savings along. Who knows, it's worth a shot. Plus, the owner was saying how the onluy people who are bidding and paying that much (last auction ended at 380 or something) is cause they don't have any dinan dealers nearby. Oh, well we will see what happens, he seems like a pretty cool dude and an enthusiast just like us.

Just got word from JP:

"it looks like 330 each my_salesman is trying a second time thursday to get us a better shake.i will know for sure tomorrow.let me know if you want them i have half or so of your order in stock the rest i would have in 2 days.ship to you in about 3 days.at330 each thats me giving up 2 to 3 thousand dollars let me know. thanks bimmers forever__ JP"

So I will most likely call him tomorrow and find out more about possibl getting a better deal and also how he wants to handle ordering. Regardless, i think $330 is a great deal since I'm not in BMWCCA and I'm in either way.

If anyone has any questions that you all would like me to bring up let me know. Spread the word in hopes of a better deal!

How many confirmed buyers were there? Does he have any idea what it could come down to with more participation?

I'd like to confirm whether it's carbon or aluminum for $330... ('95 M3)

cheddafob
09-08-2003, 06:56 PM
OK FOLKS:
After speaking with Jon Paul of Independent BMW in Tucson, AZ he told me that the best price he could get for us would be $330. I don't think you could find a new DINAN for any cheaper.

HE DOES have some carbon fiber and the rest are the aluminum (He said "most of the OBDI's are cf"). I am making no promises as to what you will get, however if you PREFER the aluminum that can probably be arranged when you contact them. My impression was that those who sign up first will have the better chance of getting the CF's.

Also, shipping will be handled on a case-by- case basis so he won't overcharge you (His guess is about $10 via Fedex Ground, and no more than 15$ for those that live further from AZ)

What I need right now from all that AGREE to purchase at the price of $330+shipping are the following to be PMed to me:

1) Name
2) E-mail
2) Shipping Address
3) Intake desired: 325, 328, 95 M3, or 96-99 M3
4) METHOD of payment: cashiers check/money order, credit card type, personal check

NOTE: All intakes will be shipped at the same time once all orders have been processed (probably a week or two depending on how people pay).
THEREFORE if you pay by personal check it will require time for it to reach the dealer and for it to clear, cashiers check/money orders need time for it to reach dealer, and all credit card purchases will have an extra 2% charge except for AMEX which is 3%.

Once I have everyone's order I will send it over, then it's just a matter of paying for it however we choose - at which point JP will calculate your exact shipping. Our goal is to get atleast 30 given the interest expressed so far. If any of you have questions please post them here and I'll try to answer them for you or direct them to JP to save some time for him since he is doing this on the side just for us.

Thanks again, everybody and lets try to get all this information as soon as possible so we can get the intakes within the next week or two

David

yeah, the auctions on ebay have nothing to do with our gb
If you have any concerns about the validity of this group buy you can look up the certified dealers in az and you will find "Independent BMW" with the phone numbers to reach John Paul. Those numbers listed are the ones I have been calling him at the whole time.

That is the phone number you will call him at when you are ready to pay ince we have evryone together

So, umm....what happened to everyone that wanted to get in on this - I should stress that we need to do this as soon as possible since he is trying to save us money from shipping by ordering it all at once from Dinan alongwith stuff he was already gonnna order.

Yes, because they always sell for less that the BIN price. You just have to be patient and bid on it.

I thought these were "close out" items. Then why does he have to order "close out" items?

I am not questioning the validity of the deal or your efforts....It's just that there is a lot of commotion about a group buy "discount" that 1) insnt much of a discount 2) is for discontinued items.

If we are going to set up group buys, we should demand that the discount should be a bit bigger before we commit to banging the drum here on the forums. There are plenty of good discounts offered by sponsoring retailers that we should demand more from those that want to do business with us.

seriously lmt, if you dont want to buy it thats fine. Originally I was helping him get rid of some stock but the owner is a nice guy who just wants to help out a fellow bimmer owner. He could sit there and sell them all day on ebay for 400 if youve been watching the auctions. As such, I think 1) $330 is a great deal and 2) especially so since they are brand new items
