I can't find anything information on the NJ MVC website, but I could have sworn that if you drop a car off your insurance you have -x- days to turn it in the plates or they will suspend your license. If I remember correctly the insurance company sends a letter to the MVC when you drop the insurance.
Anyone know if they do this or not?

most insurance companies won't let you drop the policy without the voucher of plate surrender. not sure how it works but i know the eventually catch on and send a letter. and yes your license can be suspended.

I turned them in this morning and they said that it takes a couple months and they will send you a letter first. That's contrary to what I heard last time. Of course that's assuming the insurance company even sends out the letter to the MVC and the monkeys down there process it correctly.
I've never had an insurance company ask to see a copy of the plate surrender forms. I have had Allstate, NJM and State Farm.

my ins co never sent a letter to the MVC after i dropped a car. the way it was explained to me, was that they should be surrendered as soon as possible. no specific time frame.

dunno if its different for bikes and cars but i have at least 3 old plates from previous motorcycles that i haven't returned yet. these plates range anywhere from 6mos - 2 yrs.
I work for an insurance company and I can tell you that my company usually requires some proof that you are no longer driving the car in order to remove it from your policy. Surrendered plates receipt, Bill of Sale, New registration if you transfered plates, etc.

I know before (10yrs ago) you have 1-2 weeks to return your plates after you cancelled your insurance policy. I always take my time to return the plates after i sold the car.
Last year. I found out that you have no time at all. you have to pretty much return the plate on the same day. Like we all have no job or no life just to hang around DMV a%$holes. They can suspend you license if you do not return the plate asap.
I normally dont have problem cancelling my insurance but here is a question. if insurance company need proof you sold your car before they willing to cancel the policy. right? what happen if you just decided you cant afford to drive or no need to drive but dont wanna sell the car? why cant i cancel the policy if I decided not to drive no more but wish to keep the car?

It depends on the insurance co. I had one that refused to remove the vehicle from the policy until I faxed proof of surrender and I've had others do it with a phone call - no idea if they reported it to DMV or not as I had already surrendered the plate (expecting to need proof)

I use Farm Family and have had 3 cars. Still have all the plates. No problems. My father who used to own an Autobody shop still has a crap load of plates (this was before he used Farm family most likely) and he's never encountered a problem either.

I know my insurance agent wouldn't take my car (which was sold) off the policy until they got the form from the DMV that the plates were returned. Kind of a PIA
