View Full Version : I am hooked...Wanted: Red 850
Der Flieger 05-15-2009, 12:59 PM I am hooked!!! Been hiding here for a few months reading, but never posted. Always loved the 8 series... takes me back to the 90's when I was stationed in Germany, and having these things fly by me and my Civic on the Autobahn. I test drove my 1st 850 yesterday... a 91 Red/Auto with about 55,000 miles.... stunning! I am hooked. The seller had it up on ebay, but decided to pull it do to local interest. He disclosed his reserve and didn't have any serious bidders. I offered him a bit more than his reserve price after test drive and he politely declined, mentioning that he has another possible buyer coming today from out of town. It is not a dead deal yet, but I think he thinks he can get more for it from the other guy. I was gritting my teeth all the way home, fighting myself, wondering if I should try and come up with another $1k to throw at the deal... but thus far have stuck to my guns (this is Texas).
So the hunt is officially on. What I really desire is a Red 850 6 speed with low low miles... something under 70k. Willing to accept an Automatic like the one I drove yesterday if it is as stunningly clean and shinny as the one yesterday. Anyone know of such a beast? Oh yeah... Must be Red... Real Red. Not maroon, or Orange... but Bright Pull me over and give me a ticket Red.
Many Thanks

Might want to see a Doctor about that... Sounds serious.
Ha... couldn't help myself
Sounds like the other buyer has offered $15k sight unseen... "if he likes it"
BTW... I offered 12.5k. Anyone think that is about right?

HappyLABimmer 05-15-2009, 05:03 PM He is probably trying to get you to bid more. Especially if you couldn't hold your smile when you were looking at his car, like a baby waiting for a piece of candy. ^_^ Just like me when I saw mine for the first time.
Just wait a few more days and call him again to see if he would like to sell from your first offer. If not, then offer him a little more if you really like it....but you never know...it might be true that there is another guy wanting to pay more. Supply and demand.
Hey Koenig, where you see that car in the US? Would love to see it.

--mickMick- I'm telling ya, I've got a white one that will blow your socks off. Ask around. It's near your price range and is a restore- I have 31k in it, all wrenching done by me- that's parts and paint. White is cooler anyway!

My higher mile, but mechanically perfect with HQ mods, red/black 850/6 went for less than that a few months ago. I would wait awhile until gas prices go back up, deals will start falling out of the trees again come mid summer.

Backing up a great enthusiast and seller. Although I've never seen Mr. Gregs white 850 in person, it looks great in pictures and has been restored to the T. This would be a great 850 to buy compared to the red 8 because with Gregs car, your paying almost the same price on a car thats restored and comes with aftermarket prices that people pay thousands for rather than one that is original.
Either way you go, look at the records (which I know for a fact both of Gregs cars have ;)) and good luck with your buy.
BTW, Email Greg if your interested because you are not able to access the PM (private messaging) yet.
hipshot 05-16-2009, 03:42 AM If you are worried about 1k....YOu might want to wait. 55k miles after all these years will be a boar load of maintenance in 12-24 months. Ask around the forums or shoot just read my misery posts. I'm in for 12k in repairs the hard way. A smart guy would bought a restored car with a few more miles on it. In for a penny in for a pound they say!
ethanw 05-16-2009, 11:07 AM Agree with many of the folks here... Buy TTTXGreg white 850... It has been restored from ground up and the guy is a bit crazy if you ask me. He got 4 X 850's :-)
He really knows what he is doing and here is one on of the advantage of buying his white 850... You're in Dallas and he is like 3 hours away from you. Is not like you're buying extended warranty but trust me, should you ever have problems I am sure he won't let you down... Sometime the guidance and advice from someone who knows what is doing is priceless.. I am not speaking in Greg's behalf but I know he has helped many of us here unconditionally...
Klockwerken 05-16-2009, 01:19 PM ethanw is absolutely spot on! The point that people who are knowledgable and experienced that are willing to lend/share first-hand experience and advice is priceless to use your words directly. No question. It is the Number One reason that I even bother to join forums such as this, the Subaru forums and BMW Motorcycle forum.
The advice and community is what makes owning these cars fun. It certainly isn't practical--that's NOT why we own 840's and 850's...it the fun factor and broadening our insights and perspectives with something unique and fun.
I encourage people to share what they know on this forum.

Der Flieger 05-17-2009, 02:40 AM Everyone,
Thanks for your posting and replies. I got a call back late last night on the Red 850 in Dallas. Other buyer wasn't able to get the promised funds together I guess. Anyway... seller said if I could come up a bit we could get it done... I came up to 13k and we sealed it up. I spent the day cruising... Awesome car. As far as I can tell there is little to nothing wrong with this car... There has been a good amount of local maintence done by a Bimmer shop in Addison over the last 3 years... I have receipts for something over 5000 in work. As many suggested I did make contact with Greg. His car is stunning for sure, but my main requirement above all else (inc 6 speed) was the color... There is just no other color for me... Greg and I already have discussed meeting up soon and I am looking forward to it. I would love to hear what everyone thinks good, bad... too much... real cheap... whatever you have to say. I haven't had the chance to take any pictures... was rainy tody. Maybe tomorrow a wash and a few shots (pictures... not tequilla) is in order... Until then, Here is a link to the ebay auction with some nice photos.

LOL! Every car I've ever bought had another buyer waiting in the wings to put a little pressure on me :)
Congrats on the car! Mark down this date as it may be important in the future when you're talking with your therapist :)

LEFT OVER RICE 05-17-2009, 04:39 PM I also would like to know if you inspected the car. I looked it up on eBay and it seems like a good purchase, but only time will tell how its been maintained. Good luck with the car and congradulations :D
Wuffer 05-17-2009, 05:32 PM Kinda partial to WufferRed myself!
Der Flieger 05-19-2009, 12:34 AM Not quite sure what is being asked by the two comments about inspection... Did I inspect it before buying? Depends on what u consider inspection. I did drive the car something like 15 miles slow and high speed... Moved all that was suppose to move, crawled under. Primarily looking for corrosion (my personal kryptonite). Everything seemed in order, extensive service receipts for the last 2 years.. carfax... oh... did I mention that it was red... and had 55,000- miles?
Ok... so could I have had more done... absolutley. Would I probably purchased anyway... most likely. Seller mentioned possible upcoming issue with the exhaust system. I did not have it checked, cause it really wasn't a deal breaker for me. The thought of a custom Stainless system a la Viper or Vette is appealing. I kinda weighed things out. The car came with practically new (<2000 miles) 18" M Pars (all 5 inc spare) as well as the factory wheels with practically new tires there... That is an upgrade I would have done myself if the car hadn't been so equipped... That cost is roughly $2500 bucks... take that off and I am down to 10.5... I got to thinking what I would spend in airline fees and transport costs if I found one far out of state... Could easily be $1500 in cost there. The car was otherwise stock which I prefer... Oh yeah... and it was red!!
Point being, I could find any number of ways to justify the purchase of this particular vehicle... it just added up... and it was red :)
Good ownership story this afternnon. After work I gave the 8 a quick bath and then when crusing through the neighborhood. One of my neighbors stopped me and seriously thought I hit the lottery or that I got a huge promotion or something. Long story short he thought I paid "at least $50,000" for the car... 50k respect at a 13k price tag... I love it.

TTTXGreg 05-19-2009, 01:08 AM You got a good deal in exactly the color you were looking for, don't let anyone tell you different. A wise buy. These cars are very tricky tho- they WILL suck a few more thousand out of your wallet one way or the other, out of need or volunteered upgrades!! So, hang on....!
ethanw 05-19-2009, 02:08 AM It looks like you've done some home work in terms of "basic" inspection and records. Better than nothing... Emotional purchases along with some unpleasant surprises can be very costly and you can ask some folks around here. But after all everyone spends their money just the way they want to, right :-)
Anyway welcome to the madness partner and if ever in Houston look me up....
Cheers
SilverThing 05-19-2009, 06:05 PM Congrats and welcome to the club! (and I agree with you, FE red is the best color on the 8'er - like mine - although not beneficial from a "stealth" standpoint when cruising, but still the best color imo). And please post pics when you can. Best of luck w/ your new ride.
bmwsooner 05-22-2009, 12:53 AM Congratulations. When I looked for my car I had about 4 colors I would accept and red was certainly one of them. My main requirement was a 6 speed and one (dark gray) just kind of fell into my lap one day when looking through a newspaper at the library. It was only 50 miles away and the price was kind of high but the seller convinced me before we even discussed the price that he wasn't into negotiating. It was take it or leave it and I fell in love and took it. I only drove it about 5 miles and was hooked. That was over 9 years ago and I can say that it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. A couple of water pumps and a brake accumulator have been about it. I am sure you will enjoy yours.
Chillax 05-22-2009, 11:46 PM Congrats! When I saw mine. I looked it over. Checked the papers. Told him I would be back in a week to pick it up. Have not looked back since. Red is cool. I never thought I'd ever buy a green car ... but this monster just ate me up!
