View Full Version : quick headlight question
rockytt 05-14-2009, 02:21 PM I know this has been covered-but I'm having a bit of a brain freeze this AM...
As you can see from the photo, the part that the adjuster screws into has broken (both lights actually-of course) - what do I need to order to fix this? Bucket? Complete assembly? Would it just be cheaper to duct-tape a couple of really big flashlights to my hood instead?

Koizumi 05-14-2009, 02:33 PM I managed to cement the little pieces together, but you'd have to have all the little bits.
rockytt 05-14-2009, 02:45 PM little bits are most likely scattered all over SoCal by now :)
8eights 05-14-2009, 02:52 PM Your so creative, If you do McGyver it, Please post, Thanks!
rockytt 05-14-2009, 03:08 PM Maybe I'll just make a complete assembly out of CF - be nice to get rid of all that weight over the front wheels... (yeah, right...)
TxGR8White 05-14-2009, 03:13 PM I had these made back when I had the US headlights. I might still have some somewhere - need to look for them though...

Bryson 05-14-2009, 03:30 PM Tx, been meaning to do exactly that for a while now, any chance you have a CAD file or dimensions necessary to make them? Mine aren't broken (yet) so I didn't want to remove the lights just to have them crumble. I've even got the tiny inner boring tool to mimic the groove inside :)

I forgot to add that in the end I used copper pipe end caps with 5 holes drilled into them. This was a mod that I had read about in RF and at Wuffer's. I forgot at the moment who documented the mod, but Tom has a nice pdf file up on his site with the details and pics.
Hey Steffen, it would be real cool if you had those babies made again!
TxGR8White 05-14-2009, 04:07 PM Actually, the second run was done in DELRIN plastic, which is a very stable material and makes "snapping" the insert in alot easier. The aluminum (although cool looking) made it very hard to snap the insert, and it was definately a "one-way" deal.
I will check to see if my guy is willing to make more. They were almost $20 a piece - that's what happens on a very small quantity order.

Still peanuts compared to a new headlight :stickoutt
rockytt 05-14-2009, 07:55 PM That would be great! Let us know what you find out...
Ninetyschilling 05-14-2009, 10:53 PM I would be interested in a couple of those as well my headlamps are getting a little low. Does anyone know where I can still get the headlamp adjuster repair kits? They are NLA from BMW and ever other website I have seen.

You have to buy new buckets (about $115 each). Not only will they have the updated adjuster wheels already installed, but the bucket itself will not be brittle and warped.
rockytt 05-15-2009, 03:04 AM I assume we're talking about part(s) #1 here?

Bryson 05-15-2009, 04:25 AM What changed in 06/1992?
Do the new buckets come with complete adjusters (incl. updated wheel, threaded shaft, and white ball pivots)? Or just the updated adjuster wheel?
If the former, that's a surprising deal

...comes with everything but the white ball pivots - you have to use your old ones.
Ninetyschilling 05-15-2009, 11:36 AM New buckets? Is there a part number for them on REAL OEM?
8eights 05-15-2009, 12:03 PM 3 posts above yours.
rockytt 06-06-2009, 04:44 PM OK- so the new buckets showed up today and do not have the parts that I was referring to earlier. I'm sure the new buckets will help though...)
Quoting Chad "Looking for the piece that the ball snaps into" - does this make sense? Would those be the aluminum pieces shown in post #6 or something else altogether? Looking for any and all ideas at this point - thanks!
Anyone??
Anyone have an idea of what I need here? Just not as familiar with the headlights as I should be....
