View Full Version : EVO VIII or used E46 M3?
rebelzx 08-16-2003, 10:42 PM I'm currently looking at both cars. They both have their advantages, the EVO's being more utility and potential for increased power and the M3's being more luxurious ride and better looking interior/exterior. I'm getting $1500 off MSRP too on the EVO. Which one would you pick? Is a used M3 too much hassle?
Evan e21 08-16-2003, 11:15 PM Id take the M...Becasue of the looks and that i just love BMW's.
PrinceE30 08-17-2003, 12:34 AM Is the M3 pre-owned? What kind of warranty will you get?
If you want the fastest car period, the EVO will win out until you start to throw major money at the M3. But you'll travel much more comfortably in the M3 and still get some decent milage.
The EVO...PURE FUN!!! Got to drive in one last week at an auto-x. Great stuff! That turbo rush...just be careful with a car that powerful...

SDbboy 08-17-2003, 12:51 AM I saw a few EVOs today at the car show and raced on last night, its akin to comparing a stick of dynamite (E46 M3) to a stick of gum (EVO). On the highway they get owned by M3s.
The speedomter is on the left and the whole interior looks as if was designed for toddlers. Did I mention it doesn't have cruise control?

beowoulf 08-17-2003, 01:35 AM To me they are 2 completely different cars. If you just want speed why not a nice used Z06. I can't put the M3 in the same class as these other cars. You have a stylish, comfortable and powerful car the can hang with the best in the twisties. That is why it is the yard stick all others are measured against. This car has it all.:D

The EVO will own the M3 in the twisties. It has better brakes, a lighter car, and 4WD. On the highway, the I6 will pull away I'm sure. But how often do you get up to that speed?
The EVO is a sporty car. Good quality and well refined (over 8 generations of the car). You can only complain it's not luxurious enough...but in the end it's a pretty good car and well rounded.
And of course the Z06 will take them all...

You just don't get it.
lovem3 08-17-2003, 04:56 PM The EVO is a lot of car for the money, great potential to modify. But I will get the M3 because I never keep car for more than 1 year. The E46 M3 is the only exception,I have it for over 2 years now and I still enjoy my car.If I have extra money, the Evo will be my #1 on my wish list.
rebelzx 08-17-2003, 09:27 PM I decided against the M3 after driving my Dad's friends' SMG today. My only real complaint is that there isn't much space in the back seats. The M3 has incredible acceleration, crisp handling, and a great interior. It felt a lot like the G35 I test drove, with more power, less body roll, and the same neutral handling. In the end, I decided with my family that we needed more room in the car (everyone hates getting into the backseat of a coupe) and that we needed AWD for the winters here in NJ. I'm going to check out a Subaru WRX STI tomorrow, and if it doesn't prove better then the Evo, I'll be buying it tomorrow.
PrinceE30 08-17-2003, 10:09 PM STi = Powerful
EVO = Refinement
The EVO should win out for the discriminating and involved driver...

ducati 08-17-2003, 10:42 PM I would go with a used M3(e46)
I have a sti all i can say it fast .But for a evey day car i would take the m3
A photo of my STi,if i could go back and had the money i would have gotin a M3 but the STi was $32,000 new and a used m3 was $45,000

PrinceE30 08-17-2003, 10:43 PM ducati: have you test driven the EVO for comparison? I've only been in the EVO, so no STi test drive as of yet...hopefully my next auto-x i'll get into one.

ducati 08-17-2003, 10:48 PM raced 2 evo's and won by about a car,if you are not in to subaru you should get the evo
evo=radio, better ride,not as fast
STi=faster,to much like a race car and you can hear the hole road
both are hard to find for MSRP
o yeah have 6000 miles on the STi and went on a trip to mexico in my friends EVO and the ride was great
rebelzx 08-17-2003, 11:00 PM both are hard to find for MSRP
<---- Getting Evo for $1500 off MSRP.
nsk223 08-17-2003, 11:09 PM M3 is more fun...who cares if the evo can be slightly faster in a straightline. RWD is always more fun that AWD (except in the snow). If i were you, I'd just put up with the pain of snow tires for a few months of the year and get the M3. Also, you're gonna need snow tires on an EVO.
NoSoup4U 08-18-2003, 10:33 AM It sounds like you are a family man. My two cents, which are free, :biglaughb ... avoid the Evo or STi. I would instead, look into Audi quattro OR even consider the 330xi. A 4-door AWD vehicle ... with great handling and good acceleration. Perhaps an older S4 or even the B6 variant, or even a 2.8L, etc.
I think you will need to sacrifice some speed, handling attributes if you have a family. The above-mentioned cars give you a well-rounded vehicle IMHO. I think the STi and Evo 8, although great cars, if you are not willing to track the car, I think they are a huge waste of money ...
that's just my two cents ...
SilverStreak 08-18-2003, 11:16 AM EVO is still a Mitsubishi... BMW, especially the M cars, are just in a different class... and worth the extra money, as such...
Steph328 08-18-2003, 12:15 PM I know the EVOs are supposed to be fantastic little turbo'd cars and all, but from a female perspective...
At the end of the day, you still own a Lancer.
Moral of the story: go with the M3.
--stephanie
mpowerme 08-18-2003, 01:57 PM STi in that case. You can boost them for crazy power!
rebelzx 08-18-2003, 11:14 PM I checked out an STI today and didn't like it as much as the Evo. I also checked out a new M3 and an M5 at the local BMW dealership. After running some figures with them, I found out that getting a used M5 isn't too much more then the M3. I could also use the extra space of the M5.
Right now, its between the Evo and a used M5. Tomorrow I'm going to be in NYC and my dad knows a few good BMW dealers there that have a lot of inventory. I'm going to see if they have any used M5's and hopefully, if the price is right and the car is in good condition, I'll pick one up.
And just so you know, I'm not a family man (18 years old), but I'm not going to be the only one driving the car and since my parents are helping me out with the purchase they've made a few stipulations on what kind of car I could get. Pretty much all they want in my next car is something with enough space for 4 and a few bags in the trunk, and a car that isn't hard to get in and out of.

sfhighroller 08-19-2003, 02:15 AM M3 is a pimp car for pimps only. Evo is a boy toy racer. It's true. If you want to fuck a lot of girls, get the M3 (can't beat free pussy).

Haha, I was just waiting for someone to call BS on me. I'm willing to pay more for the better car. I can afford both, and the M3 or the M5 are worth the price difference.

I'm with you on that one, except change "89 Celica" to "87 Accord", and I didn't think that thing was fast as hell :stickoutt
and yeah, it sure does make me appreciate what I am lucky enough to have now.

I got to drive my parent's 1983 chevy 3/4 ton van, and then a 90 accord ex, and I was then carless after I was 18. I feel lucky to have bought my own e36 325 when I was 20.

Actually I'm 19 years old and I've been paying for my car ever since I turned 16 and I'm still paying it off almost done though I owe $6,700 ...1992 325is A/C Schnitzer widebody kit, 5 spd, dinan chip, A/C schnitzer short shift kit, 17" equip rims made by work...granted its not an M3 buts thats coming next.... to make a long story short its not all kids who have there shit handed to them some actually have to work for there shit....like you said though I too have seen an example of the rich kid that got everything.... I pulled up to a light one night after school got out for the high schoolers and look what I see next to me pull up a brand new 2003 SMG m3 with none other than a freshly graduated teen behind the wheel .....and of course he wanted to show off since there was 4 other people in his car so I figured what the hell, race him I knew I had no chance in hell but what the hey....so we gear up and I actually took him off the line mainly because he was a jackoff and didn't know how to use his gift....so I took him off the line and in to second but after those RPM's started reving he was gone ....no shame on my part though it was all in good fun ..... only if I had shit handed to me my car would be worth 50,000 instead of 7,000....lol just my thoughts anyway.......:drink1:

Go ahead. I knew people would. I have a camera phone that can connect to my computer. I'll post pics of me driving the M5 when I test drive it and the Evo with me driving it in front of my house if I buy it. I can afford both cars, and the M3 and M5 are WORTH THE PRICE DIFFERENCE. I know the M5 is a better car, but is it $15-20k better?
And what's wrong with my parents helping me pay for a car? :dunno It's not like they're paying for all of it and I don't even have a job, or that I'm going to be the only driver. It's not my first car either, so you can't use that against me. Damn, who knew a BMW board full of people who drive nice cars could be so full of haters...

Haters we are not my freind, I just think your wasting everyone's time with this thread bc we all know it's bullshit. I wish you the best of luck with your new STi or Lancer and I am sure there are many forums out there that would love to hear about your test driving experiences.
Best of Luck!!
