View Full Version : E31 front lip..which to choose...
xP3RS1ANx 05-13-2009, 11:48 PM Whats up guys. So my dad and i recently met up with the rest of the family and I showed my uncle what's come of my e31 so far. as i mentioned in one of my threads my uncle was the previous owner of my 840ci http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1206645
he gave it as a gift. N e ways we were talking and he said i should get a front lip/spoiler for the car, and that it would look really nice. Me and my dad both agreed and iv recently been doing some searches for the different front lips for the e31. N e ways i came across these 5 spoiler

xP3RS1ANx 05-14-2009, 12:20 AM well i see what your saying but i was also hopin for feedback on the ones u guys might have of whether u like it or not, or how durable it is.
TxGR8White 05-14-2009, 12:20 AM The fiberglass spoilers are NOT plug and play, you will need to make "adjustments" to make it fit right. The best look for the E31 is the BMW CSi front end - by far.
Auraraptor 05-14-2009, 12:21 AM Most durable is OEM CSi by far.

rlly? wth thats weird I thought theyre made to fit the e31 perfectly. So ur sayin with fiberglass ones u gotta spend even more to make everything fit right?
Koizumi 05-14-2009, 12:34 AM ^^^Yes, installation would be tricky. Plus fiberglass is not as flexible or tough.
Personally, I like the CSi nose. It comes with an installation kit with all the bits that you need.
Whatever nose you choose, you'll have a hard time with driveways.

The OEM Urethane is much more forgiving than fiberglass, and it is truely plug and play. My CSi nose has encountered many a driveway and wheel stop, only to get cleaned off and then good to go. Fiberglass would have been a box of shattered pieces a long time ago. The CSi nose more than pays for itself in the long run.
xP3RS1ANx 05-14-2009, 12:52 AM i guess im gna stick with CSI then, where can i get the OEM CSI front lip u guys are talking about?
TxGR8White 05-14-2009, 12:56 AM Call Charlie Spear at GAULT BMW in Endicott, N.Y.
email: charlie.spear@gaultauto.com

alright, u guys say hes rlly reliable and gives best prices out there too huh?
8eights 05-14-2009, 01:14 AM Yup!
hipshot 05-14-2009, 01:31 AM so the that rules out the electrodyne option for you I think.
xP3RS1ANx 05-14-2009, 01:39 AM I mean i wanted the Ree-Ger infiniti style but i guess fiberglass is just trouble. i guess ill give Gault a call and see whats up and see about the CSI front
8eights 05-14-2009, 01:49 AM Remember what i said about the newspapers! You have to live with it, Get one that you will enjoy, Thats what it really boils down to, The guys are telling you whats more forgiving and what wins coucourse events and what actually serves a purpose on keeping things cooler, Other than that, The csi only looks better, IMO!
xP3RS1ANx 05-14-2009, 02:11 AM i appreciate ur words of wisdom 8eights, and i just realized the seller of the Ree-Ger Infiniti style front lip is really close by,

in Northridge actually whcih is like 5-10 minutes from where im at, so im gna give them a call tomorow and see if i can check that front lip out :D
850twin 05-14-2009, 03:03 AM I bought the Ree Ger style last month after pulling in the garage and cracking my underbumper on jack handle. I like it very much. This was the second spoiler I purchased from them and they do a nice job. If you like the CSi better as others have said it will prob have a longer life span. Just don't let the GF drive it... will last longer.
Bryson 05-14-2009, 03:57 AM The actual rieger front lip is made of a similar urethane/abs to the OEM material, slightly less ductile and more rigid. Very durable however. I had the pleasure to visit the factory a few years back and see all of the impressive/wild cars they have in the showroom (not surprised they fitted M3 twisted sideskirts to the 8 :lol)
I would hold off on the fiberglass replica, go for the real thing if you can get your hands on one still. Just seems like precarious spot for fiberglass

 ...and looks like a pear on a beautiful appletree! :D

xP3RS1ANx 05-14-2009, 08:01 PM i just went and checked it out, it looks pretty cool, and price wise it seems alright. The guy said its a good fiberglass material and if it ever were to crack its repairable

hey is it possible if u can take some pics of ur car with the reeger style front lip, i just wana see wat it looks like, iv only seen one pic of it on an e31 and thats a small pic on ebay
TerryY 05-14-2009, 09:11 PM Here are a couple of Reiger/Felgen pictures I have.
850twin 05-14-2009, 11:58 PM The other kit I bought from them was a AC copy. Looks GREAT with some extra holes in it. Will take a pic or two tom. The ReeGer will be painted next week so wait a few and I will have pics of it on car. I HATE HATE driving the car with a piece of the under bumper missing. Even I might be the only one that knows, still bugs me and I think everyone else sees it also. And no its not a personal problem...lol
xP3RS1ANx 05-15-2009, 01:43 AM Thank you for the pics Terry, and ya 850twin once show me some of the pics, and once u get ur Ree Gers painted and installed post up some good pics. im gna try to get the Ree ger style too.
I had a fiberglass widebody kit on my rx7. Pain the ass. Yes, fixable, which means putting fiberglass behind it to strengthen it again, smoothing the cracked area over with epoxy or filler and then repainting it. And the cracks love to propagate so if you hit it once, try not to hit it again.
If you do this, be prepared to drive extremely carefully around, watching for steep driveways. Trust me, they're everywhere and some you don't notice until you hear that painful crack noise :\
xP3RS1ANx 05-15-2009, 07:45 PM yup i guess id have to keep a good eye out, i feel like if i get the lip right now id mess it up cuz i do come across alot of dips on the street and by the time i see em its too late to slow down

Go for the CSi nose then. You'll scrape but it's surprisingly forgiving 'cause it's quite flexible.
RockyMtn8 05-15-2009, 10:12 PM I like the CSI nose but it seems pricey. If money were no object (and I could find one) Alpina would be my first choice. I also really like the Racing Dynamics and then the MK. But like others have said, it's your car and you need to be happy with your decision. You can always change your mind down the road and do something else.
rcrad6653 05-15-2009, 10:57 PM That Reiger nose is the worst looking spoiler of any offering for the E31. It does nothing for the lines of the car and looks like something stuck on. Please put their rear spoiler on too to go with it if you choose that option, as it will complete the process of screwing up the look of a fine car.
