The right half of the odometer is not lighting up, the half that has the trip mileage. Can I just replace a bulb, or is it some type of LCD unit?

Mine does the same thing. It lights up JUST enough to barely read it if it's dark out. Oh... on my 325i, that is.

there are 2 bulbs that light up the odometer

if part of it is visible and part is dark, one bulb may be out

Yep there are tiny bulbs behind them. Pull the cluster, two torx screws and you'll see the socket that the bulb fits into.
