Iirc you also have to reprogram the LKM. Steffen knows.

For the rear fog light install, I have to reprogram the LKM?

I think it depends on how you want them to operate. I am sure Steffen will chime in eventually.

He's been unusually quiet. I bet he's joyriding in Abilene. ;-)

on my old 840, I wired the rear fog lights to the Brake lights so that they were my extra brake lights.

And MD passed you?

I added one pin to the harness, A bulb and bulb holder and the Euro switch, When you flip the switch all the way up, There's power.

And MD passed you?

MD only has one safety inspection at the purchase of the car and then emissions only afterwards. No problem there.

Also it is not on all the time and comes on with the depression of the brake pedal only. It is the same principle used by the older Lexus GS 400 (I think)where the rear fogs are used as the additional brake lights in the US market.

This site is great. It is always exposing new ways to add/improve and spend on our pride and joy. This is in addition to the technical expertise and innovation that can't be found in a maintenance manual. Thanks.

Procedure on how to install rear fog lights is available deep in the E31FAQ Compendium found here: http://www.wuffer.net/_mgxroot/page_e31_downloads.html
Its att155.pdf for the lazy... 8-)

^^^^I've got all the parts to do the conversion but since I'm such an electronics ingrate, I'm chicken.

I recall that I was still confused about certain parts of the mod. I bought 2 oem bulb holders, are these compatible? I assume they are since they're the same white ones that hold the brake lights. I also bought oem bulbs.

I'd like to do this mod. It would b great to have someone in person help while I provide the beer & wisecracks.

I bought my switch from Gault and installed them in about an hour. It really is not hard. I have a EURO LKM so I don't know how they work on standard US LKMs.

What does your Euro LKM do to make the rear fogs work?

Wuffer

Worked just fine on my Canadian spec - even before the Euro LKM.

The only thing the reprogrammed LKM does is give you the "Fog Lite Error" if one of the bulbs is out. The big gain on the reprog is the front lights all on with brites.

I was wondering about ya partner....What a place to check an 850..... Just got back from Riviera Maya not long ago... Gotta love the 2 1/2 flight and private vila on a heavenly beach... The closest place I've seen water so beautiful is on Fijji and Maldives.... We're blessed with Mexico and yet it is such a shite country....

Good question! I bought OEM bulb holders, the same as the brake light ones, but I'm not sure that they are correct. Somewhere, I think, I read that they won't work? I can't recall and I'd really like to know.

Cheers

You can make most tail light sockets work, It does'nt have to be bmw, Long as it's the size of the circular cut out or even one close in size will work, It should'nt be a problem.

Most electronic stores that carry plugs, Can also remove it from a plug at a auto zone etc, It should push in and lock in place.

Then it'll be time to figure out how to pull out the USA LKM for a Euro. I'm ready to start blinding all these idiotic L.A. drivers not paying attention while driving on the streets :lol3

Thought I told you :)

ItŽs the "Northland-4-stage-switch" from scandinavian "day-lights" that we call TFL.
Highest position doesnŽt anything but shown here:

http://www.cafeamwehrgang.de/fbilder/y1.jpg

:D the right car please

http://www.cafeamwehrgang.de/fbilder/meins2.jpg

:stickoutt the left car please

And this is what I mean with TFL:

http://www.cafeamwehrgang.de/fbilder/010309I.jpg

remember the "doublebulb": 21W on the front and no rear lights

IŽll try to make a nice graphic the next days, but at the next weekend weŽll have "my" :) 8- and 6-series meeting, so I have to be busy in other directions...

If you have some loose 14 through 18 you'll be fine, If you have to buy some, 16 would get you plenty of use on other stuff as well.
