View Full Version : Rare Pictures
austin8 04-15-2009, 08:35 AM I remember a post several months back where someone posted a pic from a german magazine that was of a red e31 with chrome mk wheels with red center caps. I can't find it and I was hoping to use it as a reference for the decision on which way to refinish my mk wheels. Thanks in advance!
8eights 04-15-2009, 04:14 PM I remember that one, Here's another one with a original and one chrome if it will help.
rcrad6653 04-15-2009, 04:58 PM This is what you seek and I'm surprised you couldn't find it as it was in a thread you started....... :D Some MK owners didn't like it (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1160957&highlight=chrome+MK+wheels) I just checked on my MK1 restoration yesterday and you wouldn't believe how nice they have the one mangled wheel looking. The face is now perfectly straight and true and the rears are now ready to go to powdercoat. I do still like the colored centercaps. Viking Wheel and I are on the same page with the final finish and at this point I can't bring myself to deviate much from the original silver caps n spokes/machined lip, the exception being the whole wheel will be clear powdercoated and the lip coat will then be machined off to give it a slightly more polished sheen (not chrome-like). Since the car won't be driven in snow and salt (or even rain if I can help it) this is acceptable to me.

motorisym850 04-15-2009, 05:15 PM I like the ride hight of the picture to the right (white 8). Anyone know what springs this guy uses?
Peace!

8eights 04-15-2009, 05:21 PM It's a old picture, You should be able to get that rear stance with any rear spring since they can be cut, They will stiffen a bit though.
motorisym850 04-15-2009, 05:41 PM Thanks 8eights.

Koizumi 04-15-2009, 06:37 PM Hey Randy, can't wait to see pics of the car with the MKs on! I still want a set one day. Perhaps when Laszlo gets his shipment later this spring or summer :)
rcrad6653 04-15-2009, 07:17 PM Maybe I'll have them all ready to go to do a shoot with the Alpina hood being fitted..... :stickoutt Anyone can find many pictures of MK1s on an 8er. Of course it's individual taste but actually my motivation is to the OP to emphasize the original beauty of these classics and get rid of the chrome, and to show before and after the abilities of a particular company to bring back a rare wheel that most would've thrown on the scrap heap. Regardless of what Laszlo has been told (I truly believe he is relating his best information) I'm somewhat skeptical that the Krankenbergs will bring these back in the very near future, based on direct contact with Oktavia K about related matters. I wish Laz all the luck with that shipment: he's sure paid the price for them. But if they do resume production then they won't be so rare any more...... :(
austin8 04-15-2009, 07:38 PM Thanks rcrad i am a dope! I should have been able to find those. Are you suggesting that mk1 wheels never came out of the factory chrome but that someone after the fact had them chromed? BY the way I don't know how any wheel could be brought back from that pic you posted in another thread. Those wheel techs must be magicians! One more thing what tires are you going to put on your mk1s?
rcrad6653 04-15-2009, 09:52 PM Like the Zeemax front spoiler that you never see in advertizing without the optional side splitters, the MK1s aren't normally shown in chrome though their other styles are. It would have been better for me to stick with the 'classic' description rather than interchange 'original'.
Wally at Viking has actually designed wheel machinery used in the industry and going on 30 yrs. experience. He took a very responsible approach to this project from a safety standpoint, and that wheel was on the brink of trash not for what you'd expect: the severely bent outer barrel and mangled inner he wasn't too concerned about. The wheel was stripped to expose any fractures that may have occurred where the spoke integrates with the outer barrel (these are not forged wheels as I mistakenly thought), only one small fracture was found, and it could be welded. Any more in those areas and he wouldn't have touched it. Although the core was still round it was twisted slightly and thus racked back with hydraulics to be very close, then about .010 was milled from the hub face to finish truing it.
It's hard to do much with the 8er that hasn't been done before, and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then I'm guilty by going with the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta, ala our friend Mr. Carter.

CC89793 (silver) is for sale as you know, so it will the black CC90103 initially, but that one could be for sale too as a third one is in the works....;) It appears Auraraptor may be the first (in the sense of this active group here, TTXGreg notwithstanding) for the Zeemax, so I'm left to follow yet again........ 8^)
