Sh.it Sh.t Sh.t
Ok now im in deep ... today i was doing a test drive with the new configuration of the air ride the passenger side turned out very good as i had hoped to make the seals ive been trying welding and urathane Done.
For what ever reason the drivers side did not dry good enough eventho the crap is called fast dry and it sat over night.
So i drive it and it slowly leaked down ok no big deal so i drive it back and lift it up to see what leaked air line rubbed on tire ok changed the line and try to lift it ..still leaking?????
WTF
The bag rubbed on the tire and wore a hole in it!!!
SON of A
Does any one know were i can get reinforced rubber like the kind the bag is made of HELP!

So was it the deflation of the bag that caused the leak since it increased in diameter when it compressed fully?

I wouldn't fix something like that, it's probably best to get a new air bag, but first fix the cause of the rubbing of course :)

Also, wouldn't patching it make the bag thicker there and cause even more of a rubbing issue?

There are rubber bonding agents out there but it is notoriously difficult to get a really strong bond to rubber since it flexes and is fairly inert. If you do try to patch it make sure to prep the rubber properly. Scuffing it with sandpaper, and I believe bleach applied to it will help get the rubber in a bondable state.

When I was looking into bonding to rubber a while back the guy at masterbond.com was very helpful, and chatty. It is important to know the rubber type if you ask them for help.

so you tried to coat a part so that it didnt rub thru the bag? that will NEVER work....even if the material had dried. You've only bought yourself a couple more miles.
Hold on you asked a question then you answered it your self what kind of question is that , and if you use the universal air bag " bag over strut" no you wont" if you could you would have pics on the car Fully slamed and fully inflated, I DO.
My screw up was i rushed ,when i shouldnt have and it cost me.

Closer to that foot in mouth.:)

It is fairly simple to someone that has several installations and system designs under their belt.I have no need to put my 8er on air...or it would have been done already.

Theres no aftermarket support for this car....old news.

No, Im not going to offer my help (to you) on the boards now..you think you know it all...So have at it.

What size are your rims? They look like 17-18s?? Are you keeping the car "sporty" or turning it into a Luxo-cruiser type?

not sure how your setup was built but it should be pretty straight forward. I have 2 cars on aftermarket Air suspension.

I use a manifolds and individual valves with a combo of parts. One is a sport setup and the other is for ride comfort. Bags are bags, they all install the same way minus the mouting options or if your using bag-overs....which WILL kill your oem shocks pretty fast depending how switch happy you are.

I have Digital controls on each car but still play with the manual switches all the time...its addicting!!

If you plan out the setup start to finish, it should take a couple hours if u have all the tools u need and know how to weld the cups for the rear bags...or just drill and bolt them in place ;)

Euro cars (and sum Japanese like Infiniti) are prolly the hardest because they have seperate shock/springs on the rear.

Anywayz, Congrats!! It will be cool to see the very first 8'er on air-ride!!!

The setup I'll be installing this summer (850) will just be for the front only. Just to get the car up on ramps and driveways (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1148347#).

G' luck!!

My point is you are playing with the dynamics and geometry of the front end. This is a well thought out car not really designed to be "riced" for cosmetics. Some of us use the car for what it is meant- highway speeds and long distance. I question your mods in the case of sudden failure at high speed. I also question your prototype methods. You are playing with your life. Imagine one let go around a wet turn? It almost hurts us old farts to see some of the mods being done! Here's an example- my TT is coming with those high dollar HRE 19", and I like them. I'm selling them for 18's. E31 is not made for 19's IMO. I have 17 and 18 on my cars, just drove the TT with 19's. It beats the shit out of the car, again-IMO. But I haven't driven these much!? Best of luck- be careful. If I'm driving thru your area, I'll check to see if you're going to be on any highway near me!!:devillook

Did anyone else hear that ??? thought i herd a buzzing....
Any way to your lagit comment TX Im am in no way trying to rice out my car, Air ride was around way before it got popular with the kids. Almost all the highend cars have it,many of the lincons have it and on and on. I already had the air ride working on the car, the only problem was that i couldnt have the lowered height that i had when i bought it with the dinan springs.
I would have to raise the car up to the stock height. THAT was the reason i yanked them back off and modded the air bags by cutting the bag mounts and removing the internal bag assembly. In order to completely seal up the entire strut.
Because the bag brakkets are aluminum i cant weld it to the rest of the other peices and there for trying other methods to seal it, The eurathane did work on the passenger side and i should have waited on the drivers side, But i was going thru drivers withdrawls THAT is what screwed me.

I think you confused me giving u kudos (for working on your car) with me not knowing what you're attempting to do. Maybe I shouldve made it clear on my first post...

Im fully capable of doing MANY things when it comes to car customizing. However, My time on various forums have shown me that it can be more of a problem when people know this.

I could tell you where u went wrong without even looking at your car.:confused

LoL!! Zach @ Universal Air isnt going to risk sending un-assembled, patented parts for someones hack job. Seriously, Get a clue.

Also, It wasnt MY 8er that was going to get lifted...save room for dinner.
I have no plans to customize mine past rims and a stereo. Ive got plenty of custom cars at home for all occasions. The 8 doesnt need that 'stuff'.

However, I always enjoy a good challenge: So Just say the word and its on :D

BTW, German cars arent the only cars with suspension setups like this. :nono

Yes! When you see me reply, sarcastic or not, it is because I am concerned. In this case, for your safety and others. Hit a bump in a turn and pop one of those self-made seams and let me know how you like it. You are playing with a safety item, kinda like trying different bolts to attach the wings. Be carefull and sure in your quest to do this. Good luck, an no- I have no constructive input other than that.

Hey man don't be discouraged, good job on trying something new. Isn't that how most of the custom parts are created, trial and error. Hopefull more of the trial lol. These cars are for most of us our pride and joy, we love them. Some people get a bit stubborn on not wanting them changed, but hey it's not there car. It's yours so have fun. One the fixing of the bag, I don't belive it con or should be done due to the constant flex. It may work for a while, but how long? It's not something you want to let go at hwy speeds. It's anouther chunk of change but IMO it's the only choice. So good luck and let us know how it goes.

The point Alex is that it does no good to air out frustrations, etc., in a public forum and things get heated and away from the point. This is an innovative project you've taken on. Why not do it to safe and complete working condition behind the scenes and create a worklog for the benefit of people who might want to duplicate it. Airing out drama and the inevitable degradation of a thread, nobody wants to read that. The last comments you made about women and dinner for instance were completely unnecessary to the BMW project at hand and futhers an argumentative chatroom atmosphere, which these forums are not, though you often think otherwise. It's eliminated some firsthand help you might have otherwise gotten. I wouldn't do this to my car but I'm still interested in how this turns out for you in the interest of doing something innovative..go for it, and I'll even help with parts as we spoke of. The original thread only invited what inevitably happened. It's your deal, you had a setback, find what you need yourself, fix it your own way quietly and don't cuss about it publicly here, drive it, then show how you did it successfully if you want.

Its the times folks. People all over are acting out their angst or something. I see it in the streets, the actions of other drivers and the way people behave just passing each other by. Seems the news of the day and such has a lot of people on edge and many of us are reacting to things we'd normally blow off with a chuckle. I've been watching these boards for a little while now and there is definitely a bit of a trend and its mirroring what I see "out there" so I chalk it up to people being human. I hope we all remember we are just that. (where's my beer...oh!)
