View Full Version : e31 lowering
ashrafclk 04-11-2009, 12:58 AM i want to lower my car as low as possible .... what do you guys think i should do.... im thinking of heating my oem springs ... i know it sounds bad but i heated my 86 monte carlo and the rides not the best but it looks good
cantbl8 04-11-2009, 01:11 AM I think you'll scrape too much.
Will you be heating them on the car?
motorisym850 04-11-2009, 01:12 AM What is wrong with just buying a new set of lowering springs? Do the job right. I would not recommend heating the springs.
tdotbimmer 04-11-2009, 01:14 AM Get a set of front H&R and cut your OEM rear 1/4. Ask the experts how. Heating springs on a car that weight that much is a recipe for future suspension problems.
cantbl8 04-11-2009, 01:19 AM Ok - just kidding above.
Visit http://mwrench.com (http://mwrench.com/) and find and read the Spring Dyno pdf.
ashrafclk 04-11-2009, 01:46 AM im thinkin of doin the hr spring and cutting rears but i think i can get the lowest possible lowering with heating them and yes they will get heated on the car . i have a muffler shop who will do it for me...
Doug C 04-11-2009, 01:53 AM ok, well first thing first you need the reinforcement plate from www.wuffer.net (http://www.wuffer.net) , then I would never heat, yes mabe in a monte but even then you mess up the rates on the springs, then it will keep going after that till your on the snubbers, then in these cars you will destroy the frame and suspension. i think dinnan is the lowest, if you want a set then i have some due to a recent situation , i'm personally going with h&r front and stock cut in the rear when things get better,
PLEASE DONT HEAT, TRUST ME,, others will chime in on the specs for the dinnan springs
ashrafclk 04-11-2009, 02:03 AM how low are we talkin with the dinans and the price thanks and i appreciate you helping me out
Doug C 04-11-2009, 02:06 AM some others would have to chime in on how low. im not sure on the specs, i know the rears are realy stiff though.
i know h&r is 1.25" front which is perfect in my opinion, what are you looking for?
ashrafclk 04-11-2009, 02:12 AM just maybe a lil more than that... i want my tires tucked under if you know what i mean.
8eights 04-11-2009, 02:49 AM I know what you mean, Heating is the wrong way though, If you do, you will need new tires in 2 months max, This is based on them being new when you start! You will also be trying to knock the inside of your shock towers through your hood and trunk, Because heated springs with this type of weight want work, This is nothing like a monte carlo-) Please don't do it, If you do, It's gonna cost you! I don't think you have a idea of how tender and pricise in spec these front suspensions must retain, You'll see, Do it then, I dare you...
ashrafclk 04-11-2009, 03:04 AM what do you recommend
8eights 04-11-2009, 03:14 AM Your rear springs can be cut and give you great results! You will need a aftermarket set for the front, Your fronts can't be cut because of how there wound, They will pop out of the spring perch and you'll never get the front dialed in correctly, Get anyone of them except Racing Dynamic, There far too soft, "Eibach, H&R, ACS, Gpower, and traxxxx" are the one's i had experience with, Any one of these should put you low as you wanna be, You'll end up higher than you wanna be in the long run i hate to say, To tuck the front of the car will make the lower control arm raise on the out side, That is murder for the inside of your tires, Thanks Ed! While the lower control arm is flat or slighly raked downwards on the end is fine, To tuck the tire you have to cross the line! The only way to compensate is expensive hard compound tires$$$...... Been down that road before and i have molested rare E31 springs to proove it. It does look major killer when slammed though.
TxGR8White 04-11-2009, 03:18 AM im thinkin of doin the hr spring and cutting rears but i think i can get the lowest possible lowering with heating them and yes they will get heated on the car . i have a muffler shop who will do it for me...
Here is the best solution for you: remove the springs completely, you won't need them anyway. That should get you into "low-rider" territory pretty easily. Having a muffler shop work on key suspension components like you described is a scary proposition. Let us know where you are so we won't be driving anywhere near you when your car implodes.
ashrafclk 04-11-2009, 03:23 AM do any of those springs sell just the front not both front and rear.... thanks btw and can u post some pix of ur car i wanna see how low it looks
smokum 04-11-2009, 03:26 AM Well there is always air ride.................
8eights 04-11-2009, 03:30 AM Only dirstributors can order the fronts only, Usually it's the performance shops who buy volume can get them for you.
SupremeBein 04-11-2009, 03:31 AM I have H&R springs all around, 1-1/4 in front, 1" rear, I would not want to go any lower in this car.

rcrad6653 04-11-2009, 09:33 AM The new spoiler you got from Laz won't last a week, but the springs 'the rides not the best but it looks good' part, done by the muffler shop while on the car is classic. :rolleyes Do it! How 'bout hydraulics? What a hoot to see an 8er bouncin' at a stop light like a '63 Chevy... or that's prolly olskool there on planet California, ima not sure.

Not entirely true - you can get CSi springs in per axle sets.
Koizumi 04-11-2009, 04:58 PM Wanna see before & after drop pics? Search for my thread. I posted a ton of clear pics.
I'm low as hell and there's no way I could go lower. My ride scrapes and takes creativity at times to get in and out of driveways.
Auraraptor 04-11-2009, 05:05 PM Not entirely true - you can get CSi springs in per axle sets.
And Mtechs (and other OEMs). I think Marv implied aftermarket springs.

You don't understand the discussion, If you read prior posts, You would see were talking about aftermarket springs, Some he can cut to suit his desired ride height, You can't cut Csi fronts?
Yes, Thanks Aura
Coupenut 04-11-2009, 05:22 PM Out of semi idle curiosity how much would CSi springs lower the car, and are they very expensive?
Auraraptor 04-11-2009, 05:24 PM Euro Mtech's lower the car more, ride a touch softer, and are cheaper as well.
ashrafclk 04-11-2009, 05:32 PM i likeur car alot koizumi ur drop showed me perfect of what i want and ima go wit hr front and cut rears but how much do i cut the rears again
8eights 04-11-2009, 05:40 PM When i was shopping, I wish i had listened as well! I blew some good dollars trying to be cool...
Eight Ball 04-11-2009, 05:45 PM i likeur car alot koizumi ur drop showed me perfect of what i want and ima go wit hr front and cut rears but how much do i cut the rears again
3/4 for the rears. H & R 's seem to be the best choose for the fronts. I noticed you live in Elk Grove. You should come to a Euro Sunday and we can talk. I live in the Sacramento area as well. Hope this helps and good luck with your project.
Cheers,
Carter

Lower than the CSI springs? What/who is a good source for the Mtech springs?
Eight Ball 04-11-2009, 07:28 PM Lower than the CSI springs? What/who is a good source for the Mtech springs?
Gault
ashrafclk 04-11-2009, 07:40 PM whats the specs on dinan springs and whats the difference with mtech springs and csi
smokum 04-12-2009, 04:08 AM Suspension school for you man.
Who has the link for the springs tread that we went thru with ED?
Thats a good read.
rcrad6653 04-12-2009, 09:05 AM http://www.mwrench.com/Whitepapers/
You should have that bookmarked yourself Alex and know it by heart by now with all the suspensions post you've done.
Not true that OEM springs can't be cut...it's H&R fronts that can't.
CSI or Mtechs will run about $240ish ea. from Gault and can be bought in pairs, (I'll edit this and post part numbers) 8eights says that distributors can get you pairs of aftermarket springs... I'd like to know which distributor--give me a name, number, or URL or it's just a rumor.
8eights 04-12-2009, 09:45 AM Lol!
I got fronts only from Spreewell racing in San Gabriel, Ca.
And there's no good news for cutting the front of Oem springs, It's not good. The way they pertrude on either end, They pop out of the spring perch when you cut them, This is what happen from my experience and a few others.
rcrad6653 04-12-2009, 09:56 AM Thanks Marv, bookmarked.
