So today I went to Tom’s to install my Alt cable, after a few hours of pulling things out and finally reaching the wire and tube (for a first timer it took me about 4 hrs to pull and put together the whole process), I pulled out my alt cable to find that it was flexible, no cracks looked as good as new, considering this car is 91. Tom looked at it carefully to see if there were any cracks, finally got the okay from him and proceeded forward with the project.
I bought Michael’s cable and it arrived in the mail last week, the cable is very well made but it did not fit the tube, the ends would not allow the wire to go in at all, now that being said, if one take the time and creates a way to allow the wire to be mounted through the firewall, Michael’s cable is a perfect candidate, all you would need to do is add a fuse at one end, like they did to the batter cable in the back and your good to go.
I will be using his wire for a future car audio project. After looking at the tube and how the alt wire is ran, I would also look into mounting it another way, like ogorek and Michael set up the remote mount makes sense if installed right.
I think the 2 gauge wire might be over kill, and it will be a very tight fit something both Tom and myself concluded after trying to find away to fish the 2 gauge wire, so what I did was wrap my oem wire with some heat shield tape and mounted back to the normal oem set up.
Now if you wire is cracked and in real bad condition, then the 2 gauge kit would be good, but try to get it without the ends on it and crimp them after the wire is ran. The other thing you need to consider is that were the ends mount on the Alternator and other end, the oem wire fits very snug, the 2 gauge wire will require some modification to enable it to fit. So this is from first hand experience, there might be an easy way to do it, I don’t know myself but someone will chime in.
it was a fun project and I complained as always and Tom listened to it smiled, guess us newbie’s have to pay our dues…lol
I will remote mount the wire at a later date with a different gauge wire, something a little bigger than oem with a in line fuse.
I have not seen 8tech’s kit, but as will all his other products, quality is always great, anyone in the BC8 community get either of the wire kits, I will be more than happy to help them install it, meaning you turn the wrench and I supervise…lol Now that I know how to do a few repairs, I feel like Tom more and more…lol
