View Full Version : NJ inspections
MikeVance 04-08-2009, 08:01 AM $100-$150. Perfectly legit.
Bring a car that'll pass emissions if yours won't.
Let me know if you need one. Located near 08816
MIMI1 04-08-2009, 09:14 AM lol wut...
100-150 is not legit
for that price they better have a car on premises that will pass emissions and you not having to bring one that will do it
billm 04-08-2009, 12:00 PM not bad... what about obd2?
duce110 04-08-2009, 01:42 PM wow, prices seem to be goin up everywhere but i still get mine for $75,
95325i 04-08-2009, 03:46 PM I get mine done for free at the DMV :rolleyes
MikeVance 04-08-2009, 09:54 PM 100-150 is the best i've seen from people that don't know you.
If you have a place that'll pass for better then congrats. But nobody wants to go have some random guy showing up and doing something that can cost them their whole business.
AwesomeIsLuke 04-09-2009, 12:44 AM I get mine done for free at the DMV :rolleyes
And I bet this isn't a problem for you because your cars are bone stock. :rolleyes
duce110 04-09-2009, 12:04 PM oooooo wat u say, lol...
sbblowz 04-09-2009, 02:48 PM can he do one even though i dont have a obd2 port to plug into?
mz.368 04-09-2009, 03:13 PM just in case :shifty
MikeVance 04-09-2009, 07:23 PM just in case :shifty

mz.368 04-09-2009, 09:17 PM just in case what?
a need arises
MikeVance 04-10-2009, 07:13 AM gotcha.
Ill be checking today or tomorrow what he can do for everyone.
95325i 04-13-2009, 11:28 PM And I bet this isn't a problem for you because your cars are bone stock. :rolleyes
The thing is as long as not check controls are on the car will pass.
My cars are near stock. What could you have done to a 740 that would not pass anyways? :rolleyes

...Or if you did a post-cat O2 sensor delete, aftermarket ECU chip/software, window tints, aftermarket lighting, any number of exhaust modifications, the list is infinite. Why can't I do this to my 740? It has the same exact engine as your 540 :rolleyes
sbblowz 04-14-2009, 12:41 PM mike any chance you find out for me for inspection?
kishg 04-14-2009, 12:44 PM How about window tint? Car is upto snuff, will pass emissions no doubt. It just came off BMW warranty.
95325i 04-14-2009, 08:55 PM ...Or if you did a post-cat O2 sensor delete, aftermarket ECU chip/software, window tints, aftermarket lighting, any number of exhaust modifications, the list is infinite. Why can't I do this to my 740? It has the same exact engine as your 540 :rolleyes
As long as the car is OBC II and no check controls are on the car will pass the emissions. OBC I cars they spin the wheels up to 25mph or so and check the exhust gases and make sure the car is not burning rich. Software will not make the car not pass, most of them change the shift points in the tranny and adjust the timing in the motors ignition sequence. I had a lighter window tint on the windows and did not have any issues passing inpection. I have non DOT euro lights with HID's in my 328 once again not issues. Unless the cat has been removed or something more DMV works will not notice any thing in the car. I failed inspection because my e-brake was not tight (when it worked fine It took it in the next day and it passed with out doing anything to it) Unless you have done something super oveus or they are just beeing an ass it seems the DMV inspectors will just pass the car.
Since you have the same 4.4 V8 you will know that its not the best motor to try and mod since the increase in power will yeld very little with out FI.

You're lucky. So many horror stories with Inspection stations. I guess sometimes you get lucky.

Firstly, it is OBD-I and OBD-II, not OBC.
They check exhaust gases for several different things, not just running rich. They test for HC, CO, CO2, O2, and NOx. An engine performance chip can increase NOx levels, usually not to the point where you'd fail at a DMV inspection, but it isn't unheard of either.
Some people don't have lighter window tints like you do. I can pretty much guarantee that any DMV will fail you if your tints are 30% or darker, it depends on the employee's judgement otherwise.
Aftermarket HID's usually aren't a problem if they look factory, but I've heard plenty of people who failed for it.
They will walk around the car will a mirror that looks under the car. They are looking for exhaust mods. If they don't see a muffler and/or they believe there was a modification made to the exhaust system, then they will probably fail you, again depending on the judgement of that particular DMV employee.
Also, the appearance of the car will play a role in how harshly they grade you. If you have a completely stock Honda Accord with factory wheels, you stand a good chance of passing from the start. If you roll in a slammed E36 M3 with a wing, lip spoiler, muffler delete, racing seats, and black BBS wheels, then they will probably be way more critical (once again, depending on the employee) than they were with the Accord.
And as for me, I have a pretty good feeling that I won't pass inspection next January because of my 6 speed swap. I will have an SES light. I'm not sure yet if I'll be able to get my DME reflashed (my nearest dealership's service department seems pretty incompetent).
If you're car is stock enough to pass, then fine. But there are plenty of people here who wouldn't pass, so I'm not sure why you have to come in here and act all self-righteous.
metro32168 04-15-2009, 01:23 PM wow, prices seem to be goin up everywhere but i still get mine for $75,
it's $60 down in keyport.
MikeVance 04-15-2009, 08:04 PM it's $60 down in keyport.

bmwcrazi24 04-16-2009, 11:15 AM hey im interested. Tried NJ state 3 times, no go. I got euro s52 cams in my m50 as well as headers and race cats. The guy said i have no chance in passing state inspection unless i literally redline my car while waiting in line before getting inspected lol. Can i get more info?
MikeVance 04-17-2009, 10:52 PM just letting everyone know I'll be talking to the guy tomorrow morning. Getting a list of people, their cars and whats wrong(or right) with them. I'll update when i find out.
Next saturday is good to go so far. unless something comes up. Located near 08816. Let me know who will come and with what. He said prices will vary depending on what it is. if its simple tint or whatever then not too much. but if you're pushing 700hp in an e30 or something insanely non passable like that, then it'll be more.
Z3speed4me 04-22-2009, 08:19 PM This might be useful sometime next year.....

The dude at the DMV near my house scares me. The last time I brought the car in, he raced it up and down, stomping on the brakes
Personally, I think he was a nut.

E36RACER 05-01-2009, 02:04 PM Will this guy put an inspection sticker on my 1923 T-Bucket? I don't want to go qq tags because I wouldn't be able to bar hop with it at night (not allowed to drive late at night with qq) So the problem is that it's an open wheel car. Some guy near me said he would do it over the phone then when I took it to him he said no because it has no fenders. Can you as your guy or give me his number and I'll call and ask myself? Thanks

its amazing that so many members were searching for places to do an inspection. (im sure if you search for it, a bunch of threads will come up)
including me. But no one ever posted a place to get it done. Just suggestions saying to go to a gas station or a mom and pop place. Where were you guys last year when everyone was looking?
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/search.php?searchid=12693004
Im going to call him up today hopefully and double check if saturday is good to come by. I have one guy coming who else needs or wants to come?

depending if its your 02 sensor is bad or if you're just running too rich/lean. if the 02 sensor is bad there really isnt anything we can do.

Ok. :(
so why pay so much if he can't pass me for that? What does he pass? tints and other stuff?
MikeVance 09-07-2009, 09:48 PM Ok. :(

theres no real way to get the machine to pass on a obd2 car with a bad 02 sensor. even if he plugs a sniffer into another car, the computer still shows your 02 sensor is shot. I can double check but im pretty sure this is the case. ill let you know. i think we can figure out a way.
So can you do it for an OBD1 e36 M3 or not?
MikeVance 09-22-2009, 05:23 AM So can you do it for an OBD1 e36 M3 or not?
