How many pet stores are there in/around Boston that sell dogs? I'm thinking of getting my dad one for his b-day in a little less than 2 weeks but there arent that many places that I can think of.
I've checked the pet store in Lynn next to Atlantic Toyota, Debbies Petland in the SquareOne and Southshore, and even went as far as the Silver City Galeria in Taunton.
any others?

also check google... decide what you want and do a search. if you want to drop the cash get a purebread whatever with papers...

don't go to a pet store.. while I feel bad for those little guys in there they tend to have issues as they get older thanks to the petstore...

x2 on adoption. Pick a breed, and chances are there is an agency for them. Try Pet Finder.

I'm getting one or two greyhounds next month. I got attached to my roomie's.

The pet store should be your last option. Try to know first what kind of dog your father would like. Then find a reputable breeder, as said before, it doesn't matter if you get its paper or not.

Absolutely agree. Narrow down the breeds your father wants and then find a breeder. You might have to travel a weekend to pick one up, but at least you get to know the bloodline and you get to see the environment it was reared in.

if they're only puppies my guess would be you'd only see the environment their parents were reared in :devillook

def would NOT buy a dog from a pet store... you're asking for MAJOR medical bills later on down the road if you go that route

Pet stores FTL. They support puppy mills that are quite horrific and cruel. And the animals are often not healthy. Rescue/adoption is the best way to go. Everybody wins that way. I have a rescue mutt from the people at the link below and he is a great dog. Give one of these dogs a stable home and you will have done something genuinely good.

Please use the adoption from a shelter or a rescue group ... plenty around ! if you find one close by you, call them - they do not always have online all the dogs that are there a great way to start (as previously mentioned) is petfinder:

As others have said, adopt. And in case you are not convinced, or can't find a suitable dog, take a real good look here http://stoppuppymills.org/inside_a_puppy_mill.html

In addition, are you sure your dad actually wants a dog? It would be a real shame since it's not a tie you can return to a store. Think real hard about that as well.

And, puppy mills are unfortunatelly pretty wide spread and are not just through pet stores. Craigslist, "breaders", fake rescues on PetFinder.com, etc, etc.

Again, think real hard before you make that commitment, especially on someone's behalf.

NO pet stores. Don't do it. A great small breed that isn't a yippy dog is an Italian Greyhound. I have one, and he's awesome. Extremely low maintenance, and just a cool dog in general. Plenty of them need homes.

Pet stores = 99% puppy mills. Do not support this evil industry.

Take a look at the small animal shelter at the MSPCA Nevins Farm in Methuen. My girlfriend work on the farm side, but she said there are always small dogs in there. We got our two pugs from there and my mom got her Dachshund/Chihuahua mix there. If you're only looking oline, that just a small fraction of what they have there.

tell your dad you want to get him a dog. Like wrap up a stuffed dog and put a I.O.U. tag on it. That way he can find his own dog and make sure he really loves it. and adopt a dog for $80 not buy one at some shit hole that abuses dogs for $1000+

Totally agree with everything said here.

Spend the $200 at a shelter (and donate an extra $100 for all you just saved) and then use the additional $1,200 or more you would have spent at the E Z bake puppy oven and buy yourself some parts for your car.
