This summer I'll be taking a trip up to maine with my father. He's a huge hiking buff so we'll be going all over. I live in CT so thats where we'll be coming from. My father said to specifically ask if there are any good ones between East Port and Moose Head lake. I like hiking too but this could make for some serious M3 action. Thanks ahead of time for input.

Route 9 (aka, The Airline) is about your only option from Bangor to Eastport. It use to be a very dangerous road but about 7 or 8 years ago they widened it and even threw in some passing lanes on some of the longer up-hill sections. Now it fast and relatively smooth.
Stay away from Route 1 in the summer, especially south of Bar Harbor.
Head over to the western part of the state if you have time. The Rangley Lakes region is stunning and the roads around there are fantastic (Route 17, Route 16 and Route 4 and most others).

Also, if you would like any scenery try to avoid the maine turnpike. It's an efficient route to take but horribly uninteresting...hundreds of miles of straight, heavily patrolled highway.
My girlfriend is from Maine so we head up there pretty often to visit her folks and some of our friends. It's a beautiful state overall with tons of hiking/fishing/camping opportunities, but the turnpike is a drag.

17 is nice, but every few miles you will get a puck-up that pulls up and drives at live 25mph. I have lived in Maine for a long time and if you want a good view of the coast then you want rt1. You wont go fast, but then again you wont go fast on any road in Maine.

I took a trip up to Bar Harbor last summer and took rt 1 hoping for more scenery than on 95. It was very slow and uninteresting. Disappointing enough to take 95 home. Maybe rt1 is better north of Bar Harbor, but as exartist said, not much to see there south of Bar Harbor.

if you want some deep woods hiking and climbing, check out baxter state park. Its about 4 hours into maine from the south border. It is amazing there, well worth the trip

For something different, don't come up 95!
Come in from the west in NH on either 2 or 16.
Off 16 pick up 6 from Lincoln to 1, halfway between Danforth and Calais, head south to the coast! Hiking Maine in Summer means BUGS baby! Bring lots of bug dope or netting. Black flies are the state bird and mosquitos at night will give cause for transfusions! Enjoy!
