View Full Version : Need help w/PS pump removal to replace CPS sensor

I'm replacing the original CPS sensors on the M70. Top one for the passenger side came out, but the PS pump is blocking the removal of the lower sensor. I can't see how to remove the pump. The E32 Bentley manual doesn't cover the M70. Do I have to remove the PS pulley to see the bolts? I already took off the tensioner and belt so the pulley now spins freely.

I tested the resistance on both. The plug on the passenger side read 489 ohms which is within the specs, but the driver side plug read 0 on my multimeter. As crazy as this sounds, I'm getting the same on my E32 which has 2 newer sensors, only 2 years old. The pass side on that reads 580 ohms and the drivers side registers a goose egg. I guess that M70 is next, but I need to get the 8 going. Please chime in, and thanks in advance.

Looks like there is potentially good info there, but I can't find it. I can't see anything for the CPS sensors, but when I look at water pump removal it just says remove this, remove that, but no pics or verbiage of how to do it.

1990 Repair manual available here: http://www.wuffer.net/_mgxroot/page_e31_downloads.html
Section 12, Page 12 14/2 - 12 14/4 - looks pretty explicit to me - pics and everything!

carspainc, I see it now, and thanks!! I'll print that at work tomorrow and take it home. Thanks so much for the help!

Wuffer, thanks as well. You're always a huge help.

...remove the PS pump pulley and you can access the mounting bolts. Remove bolts and GENTLY move the pump to one side to get the CPS out. The newer style CPS is actually a little bit shorter, so going back in will be easier.

TXGr8, so I just have to remove the pully and then the 3 bolts, and I can keep the lines intact? It would be great if I didn't have to have PS fluid all over the floor.

I left my lines intact, and I have the tandem vane pump (if you have ASC+T - you have tandem vane). Just be gentle when you move it so as not to put a kink in the lines.
