View Full Version : Interior Wood Trim
Bankswood 03-14-2009, 10:49 PM Hey everyone, my 97 840ci interior is pristine except for the wood trim. It has faded and the protective clear has cracks. Does anyone know of an aftermarket replacement /solution? The wood trim is just down the middle console. Three pieces.
rockytt 03-15-2009, 12:06 AM No aftermarket available (except for the stickers) - IIRC the veneer is too thin for any refinishing work either. If it's only the clear coat it's certainly possible to (very very carefully) sand off the clear coat, restain the wood and recoat. At one time there was a group in Northern Cal that would attempt the work, but gave it up as too difficult. I'll bet the folks at Sick Puppy would give it a go though...
Auraraptor 03-15-2009, 01:06 PM I would sand it down and paint it Al color, and finish with a clear coat.
smokum 03-15-2009, 06:39 PM Wasnt there a place that did that type of work i remember seeing it a long time ago some one from here had sent outthere trim parts and they came back with a differnt finish. let me see if i can find it.

They can do any finish you like - but it ain't real wood/cf if that's what your after.
The factory wood pieces are rare enough, I wouldn't strip one of those down and give it over to Joe - if that's the route you're going to take, just buy new pieces and send them over to him. (They're not all that expensive and you might as well end up with new ones after you spend the $$$)
(click on >gallery>molded kits> bmw> and then hit the left arrow to my one of my cf pieces - it's different now as I have a double-din HU in there now)
Bankswood 03-15-2009, 08:14 PM Thanks for the info. I like the looks of your caqrbon fiber. I assume I would have to by the "blanks" at a BMW dealer? How much did they charge you for the refinish on your 8?
rockytt 03-15-2009, 10:55 PM Get the blanks for Gault -
I think I ended up spending about $800 to do the 3 pieces down the center spine of the car + the ribbed/vented piece above the fold down piece/ski pass through in the back. Not cheap by any means, but such is the nature of customized pieces for the 8.
(If you go the CF route-I've got my "old" center console-the one in the pic-available for a pretty good price)
Bankswood 03-15-2009, 11:33 PM How much for the CF pieces? I need the area around the radio/shifter, ashtray, back console
rockytt 03-16-2009, 12:35 AM Well, I kinda need the ones in my car-but I have the main piece (around radio and shifter - the one in the pic) available because I converted my radio to a double din-
You'd need to supply the center (ashtray/phone) and back piece to Joe at EWD and then grab my extra-
If your really interested I could give Joe a call and find out what he'd charge to do the two pieces and I'd let mine go for $200 (you'd be looking at $400 + your core/$80 for new if you didn't pick up my piece) - (I hope I'm explaining it well - just spent the day with my two kids and my brain is a bit fuzzy :) )

850twin 03-16-2009, 01:46 AM I had these done by a company in NY. This was the real wood inlay, but this is a close, almost better than the real thing. 300.00 for all. Well worth it.

rockytt 03-16-2009, 07:52 AM That's pretty sweet!
Imndeep 03-20-2009, 01:33 PM Hey 850 twin, could you tell me where you bought your wood trim from? I am picking up a 850Ci and all the trim needs replacing so I might as well replace it with the stuff you found, it's beautiful!
